The influence of walkability on broader mobility for Canadian middle aged and older adults: An examination of Walk Score™ and the Mobility Over Varied Environments Scale (MOVES).

Neighborhood built environments may play an important role in shaping mobility and subsequent health outcomes. However, little work includes broader mobility considerations such as cognitive ability to be mobile, social connections with community, or transportation choices. We used a population-based sample of Canadian middle aged and older adults (aged 45 and older) from the Canadian Community Health Survey-Healthy Aging (CCHS-HA, 2008-2009) to create a holistic mobility measure: Mobility over Varied Environments Scale (MOVES). Data from CCHS-HA respondents from British Columbia with MOVES we

Factors associated with restricted mobility outside the home in community-dwelling adults ages fifty years and older with knee pain: an example of use of the International Classification of Functioning to investigate participation restriction.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the links between knee pain characteristics and restricted mobility outside the home, and how these are influenced by mobility-specific activity limitation, age, sex, socioeconomic status, environmental factors, and comorbidity. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of community-dwelling adults age > or = 50 years. A total of 2,252 responders reporting pain in and around the knee in the last year were eligible. The primary outcome was self-reported restricted mobility outside the home in the previous 4 weeks (dichotomized as present or absent). RESULTS: Kne

Rethinking the antivaccine movement concept: A case study of public criticism of the swine flu vaccine's safety in France.

In this article I discuss the definition of "the Antivaccine Movement" using the case of the French controversy over the safety of the 2009 pandemic flu vaccine. I show that the group of main actors who criticized the vaccine's safety is heterogeneous. This heterogeneity can be found in the type of arguments mobilized to question the vaccine's safety and in these actors' likelihood of being involved in any vaccine-related controversies. I show that only a minority of these actors rejected vaccination in general and mobilized against all vaccination campaigns. Most of these actors only occasion

The New Zealand mobile surgical bus service: what is it achieving?

AIM: Equitable access and provision of healthcare is a cornerstone of New Zealand Government health planning. Recent closures of rural hospitals have lead to difficulties with access to surgical services. The mobile surgical service has been developed to help; partly to address this issue as well as to address several other stated goals in the provision of rural heath. This study aims to audit the goals set out for the mobile surgical service and determine if they are been achieved. METHOD: The following outcome measures were assessed: number and type of procedure, length of stay, complicatio

Exploring Growth-Stage Variations in Home Use of Positioning and Mobility Assistive Technology for Children with GMFCS IV Cerebral Palsy: Parental Insights and Challenges.

This study examines how the use of postural and mobility devices evolves in home environments for children with GMFCS IV cerebral palsy, focusing on parents' perspectives on benefits, outcomes, and challenges. As children grow, changes in muscle strength, motor function, and daily activity demands necessitate adjustments in assistive devices to maintain mobility and postural support. Data from 10 parents, collected through descriptive statistics and qualitative interviews, covered device types, usage patterns, and family impacts across developmental stages from preschool to adulthood. Device n

Subjective Successful Aging in the Presence of Mobility Disability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Researchers often define successful aging as freedom from disability and disease, yet the perceptions of older adults living with disability challenge this conception, demonstrating that they can indeed age successfully. This paper adapts a framework of successful aging with disability, basing it on the subjective assessment of key components contributing to success among older adults living with mobility disability due to multiple sclerosis. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Employing a qualitative, theory-grounded methodology, we conducted semistructured interviews wit

RESNA position on the application of power mobility devices for pediatric users.

This paper serves as an update to the previous RESNA Position on the Application of Power Wheelchairs for Pediatric Users with more current and additional scientific literature. This document contains typical clinical applications and best evidence from the literature supporting the application of power mobility (PM) for young children and to assist practitioners in decision-making and justification. It is RESNA' s position that age, limited vision or cognition, behavioral issues, and the ability to walk or propel a manual wheelchair short distances should not, in and of themselves, be used as

Phenomenological perspectives on self-care in aging.

Self-care is a central concept in health care and may be considered as a means to maintain, restore, and improve one's health and well-being. When performed effectively, self-care contributes not only to human functioning but also to human structural integrity and human development (ie, to a dynamic and holistic state of health). Self-care as a clinical concept is relevant for health care professionals, and it should be meaningful to investigate it at a philosophical level and to further elaborate upon this concept. The aim of this article is to discuss and elaborate upon a phenomenological pe

Effect of mobile application types on stroke rehabilitation: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a significant contributor of worldwide disability and morbidity with substantial economic consequences. Rehabilitation is a vital component of stroke recovery, but inpatient stroke rehabilitation programs can struggle to meet the recommended hours of therapy per day outlined by the Canadian Stroke Best Practices and American Heart Association. Mobile applications (apps) are an emerging technology which may help bridge this deficit, however this area is understudied. The purpose of this study is to review the effect of mobile apps for stroke rehabilitation on stroke impair

Promoting mobility and healthy aging in men: a narrative review.

Maintaining mobility is an important aspect of health and well-being in older men. This literature review describes several modifiable and nonmodifiable risk factors impacting bone, muscle, and joint health. Exercise and nutritional interventions may help to prevent the progressive deterioration in bones, muscles, and joints impacting mobility in later life. Limitations in mobility are increasingly recognized as a major public health problem due to an aging population and growing number of older individuals affected by disabling comorbidities. Despite increasing numbers and debilitating conseq

Mapping Workplace Neighborhood Mobility Among Sex Workers in an Urban Canadian Setting: Results of a Community-Based Spatial Epidemiological Study From 2010-2016.

Mobility among sex workers has been linked not only to improved economic and social opportunities, but also to concerns regarding displacement, criminalization, and violence. In 2014, new "end-demand" legislation criminalized new aspects of sex work in Canada (e.g., third-party advertising, purchasing) while leaving the sale of sex legal. Utilizing data from a longitudinal community-based cohort of women sex workers in Metro Vancouver (An Evaluation of Sex Workers Health Access [AESHA], 2010-2016), we used kernel density mapping to understand and identify geographic patterns of workplace neigh

Unlimited Smartphone Data Plans in Older Adults With Data Deprivation: Quasi-Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: The growth of mobile health has underscored the critical importance of equitable internet access in promoting healthy aging. Among older adults, particularly those in digitally underserved populations, access to mobile data is often limited due to affordability and technological barriers, leading to a phenomenon known as "data deprivation." This form of digital inequality limits the older adults' ability to participate in social, recreational, and community-based activities, which are protective against isolation and decline in later life. In South Korea, where unlimited smartphone

Understanding the perspectives of older adults and physiotherapists on home-based lower-limb exoskeletons.

Older adults often experience a decline in functional abilities, affecting their independence and mobility at home. Wearable lower-limb exoskeletons (LLEs) have the potential to serve as both assistive devices to support mobility and training tools to enhance physical capabilities. However, active end-user involvement is crucial to ensure LLEs align with users' needs and preferences. This study employed a co-design methodology to explore home-based LLE requirements from the perspectives of older adults with mobility impairments and physiotherapists. Four older adults with self-reported mobilit

Time-activity and daily mobility patterns during pregnancy and inequalities in air pollution exposure in perinatal outcomes: a cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution exposure assessment during pregnancy often relies on static models based solely on residential addresses. These models may underestimate true exposure and distort assessments of environmental inequalities by neglecting daily mobility. This study aimed to quantify exposure misclassification due to mobility and to assess how it varies across socioeconomic groups in Strasbourg, France. METHODS: We analyzed data from 497 pregnant women enrolled in the MOBIFEM cohort. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), particulate matter ≤ 10 μm (PM₁₀), and ≤ 2.5 μm (PM₂.₅), was modeled u

"How did that happen?" Public responses to women with mobility disability during pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about current societal attitudes toward women with significant mobility disability who are visibly pregnant. OBJECTIVE: To use qualitative descriptive analysis methods to examine perceptions of women with significant mobility disability about how strangers reacted to their visible pregnancies. METHODS: In late 2013, we conducted 2-h telephone interviews with 22 women with significant mobility difficulties who had delivered babies within the prior 10 years. The semi-structured, open-ended interview protocol addressed wide-ranging pregnancy-related topics, including
