Anxiety sensitivity in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder symptom clusters among young adults with probable post-traumatic stress disorder.

Despite the promise of past research on anxiety sensitivity (AS) and posttraumatic stress, extant work is limited, given (1) most studies consist of non-Hispanic White and middle-aged samples, (2) few have demonstrated incremental validity to general emotional traits and social determinants of health, and (3) limited work has characterized how AS relates to specific Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptom clusters among those with (probable) PTSD. The current study evaluated the role of AS in relation to PTSD symptom clusters among a racially/ethnically diverse sample of young adults with

Measuring health-related quality of life in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy: a COSMIN systematic review and conceptual framework.

BACKGROUND: Facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD) is a common hereditary myopathy causing progressive muscle weakness. FSHD has substantial impacts on function and health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Patient-reported outcome measures (PROs) are used to assess HRQoL, yet their suitability for FSHD remains unclear. OBJECTIVES: (1) identify PROs used to assess HRQoL in adults with FSHD; (2) evaluate the evidence for their measurement properties; and (3) develop a conceptual HRQoL framework for FSHD. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted in accordance with COSMIN and PRISMA-COSMIN

Determining the psychometric properties of a novel questionnaire to measure "preparedness for the future" (Prep FQ).

BACKGROUND: People are living longer than ever before. However, with living longer comes increased problems that negatively impact on quality of life and the quality of death. Tools are needed to help individuals assess whether they are practicing the best attitudes and behaviors that are associated with a future long life, high quality of life, high quality of death and a satisfying post-death legacy. The purpose of paper is to describe the process we used to develop a novel questionnaire ("Preparedness for the Future Questionnaire™ or Prep FQ") and to define its psychometric properties. MET

Social behavior of students who are seriously emotionally disturbed. A quantitative analysis of intervention studies.

The social behavior of students who are seriously emotionally disturbed sets them apart from their normative classroom peers. This article provides a quantitative analysis of intervention studies dealing with the social behavior of seriously emotionally disturbed students. Social behavior was broadly defined as including social skills deficits, behavior under inadequate stimulus control, and inappropriate behavior in the classroom. Of the 28 studies located, 11 dealt with some aspect of social skills and 17 with inappropriate classroom behavior. Each study was analyzed with respect to (a) the

Psychological recovery after SCAD: Identifying protective and vulnerability factors using cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is associated with substantial psychological sequelae. Although previous studies have identified individual risk factors for poor mental health post-SCAD, none has examined whether protective and vulnerability factors cluster together. This study aimed to identify distinct post-SCAD psychological profiles. METHOD: A cross-sectional survey of 263 SCAD survivors recruited from the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute Arteriopathies and SCAD Cohort (VASC). Participants completed measures of anxiety (GAD-7), depression (PHQ-9), cardiac

A novel computational analysis integrating social determinants information from EHR and literature with Alzheimer's disease biological knowledge through large language models and knowledge graphs.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) and AD-related dementias (ADRD) are expected to affect over 100 million people by 2050, placing a significant strain on public health systems. Social determinants of health (SDoH), which include factors such as socioeconomic conditions and environment, play a crucial role in AD risk. Despite growing evidence, the understanding of SDoH's impact on AD remains limited. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: This study leverages large language models and knowledge graphs (KGs) to extract AD-related SDoH knowledge from literature and electronic health reco

A systematic review of the psychometric properties of the Sexual Relationship Power Scale in HIV/AIDS research.

The Sexual Relationship Power Scale (SRPS) was developed over a decade ago to address the lack of reliable and valid measures of relationship power in social, behavioral and medical research. The SRPS and its two subscales (relationship control [RC], decision-making dominance [DMD]) have been used extensively in the field of HIV prevention and sexual risk behavior. We performed a systematic review of the psychometric properties of the SRPS and subscales as reported in the HIV/AIDS literature from 2000 to 2012. A total of 54 published articles were identified, which reported reliability or cons

Perceived validation and criticism in pain: Development of a new measure in chronic pain.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that the way others react to a pain flare-up impacts on psychological and pain-related symptoms in chronic pain (CP). Experiencing validation from others is associated with less negative emotions and better functioning. Contrarily, experiencing criticism is linked to greater pain intensity and worse functioning. Nonetheless, studies are limited by an exclusive focus on spouses rather than significant other relationships, the use of proxy constructs (e.g. social support, responsiveness, solicitousness) rather than specific measures of validation and criticism and a

Neural Circuits of Social Behavior in Autism Spectrum Disorder: From Mechanism to Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Difficulties in social communication and interaction are core diagnostic features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet interventions targeting these difficulties have modest and variable effects. Understanding mechanistically distinct contributions to social behaviors may identify new therapeutic opportunities. METHODS: This narrative review integrates human neuroimaging studies, supporting rodent circuit neuroscience, clinical intervention research, and developmental studies. We organize the findings into four overlapping functional-computational domains and relate these doma

Inadequate antibody validation places substantial numbers of animal and human tissue samples at risk of waste.

Lack of antibody validation by researchers frequently misdirects biomedical research, yet the ethical consequences-particularly avoidable use of animal and human biological materials-remain unquantified. Using focus groups (n = 12), surveys (n = 107), and systematic analysis of 785 publications, we examined how researchers select and validate antibodies, and quantified the downstream ethical costs. Antibody selection is substantially influenced by social factors such as previous laboratory use and peer recommendations, while systematic evaluation of performance characteristics remains limited.

Beyond the game: social interaction as a bridge from sports to community cohesion and belonging.

Although community sports are widely promoted to enhance social integration, the mechanisms linking individual participation to collective cohesion remain theoretically underdeveloped. Grounded in Social Capital Theory and Social Interaction Theory, this study seeks to explain how social interactions serve as a conduit for converting sports engagement into community assets. To achieve this, a cross-sectional design was adopted, utilizing validated measurement instruments to survey participants in community sports activities. Structural Equation Modeling was subsequently employed to uncover key

Toward an integrative understanding of social phobia.

Our objective was to examine the neurobiology of social phobia from the perspectives of basic sciences, genetics, immunology, neuroendocrinology, neurotransmission and neuroimaging and to provide an integrated understanding of social phobia in the framework of a hypothetical neural circuit. Family and twin studies provide evidence that social phobia is heritable with significant genetic influence, and molecular genetics offers possibilities in understanding the nature of the trait that is transmitted. The biologic distinctiveness of social phobia from anxiety disorders and physiological valida

Development and psychometric validation of a self-report instrument assessing perceived disaster preparedness among Spanish nurses.

AIM: To develop and validate SN-READY, a context-specific, self-reporting instrument that measures perceived disaster preparedness and self-efficacy among Spanish registered nurses. BACKGROUND: In light of the escalating frequency and severity of disasters, there is an imperative for a nursing workforce that can respond in an effective and coordinated manner. While the World Health Organization recognises the indispensable role of nurses in disaster health systems, there was previously no validated instrument to measure perceived preparedness specifically within the Spanish nursing context.

Rethinking negotiation research through large(r) data sets.

Negotiation research is increasingly moving beyond small, tightly controlled laboratory simulations toward larger and more diverse data sources. Here, we review research on negotiations that uses large datasets and show how utilizing such datasets can advance contemporary negotiation research. We define large(r) data broadly by volume (i.e., number of observations), variety (i.e., different data modalities), and velocity (i.e., temporal density of observations). Our review is organized around four shifts for negotiation research through such data. First, platform data can make impasses more vi

Analysing the Interaction of Sex and Laboratory Conditions in Animal Research.

The persistent underrepresentation of female animals in biomedical research, particularly in medical and dental sciences, has significant implications for research quality, translational validity and patient safety. In dental preclinical studies, the exclusion of female animals can obscure key biological differences in oral disease pathogenesis, progression and response to treatment, thus compromising the development of effective therapies for diverse populations. Evidence from biomedical research underlines the public health risks of such omission, and parallels in dental science highlight th
