Assessment of associated factors for the need of health care social worker intervention in emergency departments patients.

Social vulnerability is frequently overlooked in emergency departments, where acute medical priorities may overshadow patients' social needs. We evaluated the AP-HP Early Social Frailty Identification Questionnaire in 343 consecutive adult emergency department patients. Fifty patients (15%) met criteria for hospital social worker intervention, compared with only two referrals through routine clinical practice. Housing instability, social isolation, and financial insecurity were the most frequent needs identified. Male sex and higher triage acuity were independently associated with referral. Th…

Characterization of social frailty in survivors of sepsis: a multicenter qualitative investigation.

OBJECTIVE: Social frailty is a concept emerging in the older adult literature; it describes a progressive state of vulnerability characterized by a loss of the resources needed to fulfill basic social needs. Social frailty and vulnerability are known to negatively affect physical outcomes and mortality, resulting in higher health care costs and resource use. Social frailty after acute and critical illness has not been described and might be an important mechanism that prevents full recovery. Using multicenter qualitative data, we sought to establish if social frailty was important during recov

A longitudinal exploration of the impact of social anxiety and individual attachment on depression severity.

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that insecure attachment and early onset of social anxiety disorder (SAD) create vulnerability for future depression. The current study explores the mediating role of social anxiety symptoms in the relationship between attachment and depression at baseline and one year later. The study also looks at the longitudinal impact of changes in attachment and social anxiety, on depression severity. METHODS: Participants (n = 162) completed structured clinical interviews and measures of depression, social anxiety, and adult attachment. A subsample of the participants (n =

How place shapes diarrheal risk: An eco-social analysis of environmental and social infrastructures in riverine Indonesia.

Diarrheal disease remains strongly patterned by environmental and social inequalities in place-based riverine settings, where daily interaction with contaminated water environments shapes exposure risk. Guided by eco-social theory, this study examines how environmental and social infrastructures jointly structure diarrheal vulnerability in riverine communities of Jambi Province, Indonesia. A cross-sectional survey of 463 adult household heads was integrated with river water quality assessment and analyzed using a parsimonious structural equation model to estimate pathways linking social capita

Spatial pattern of congenital toxoplasmosis incidence and its relationship with vulnerability and national health indicators in Brazil.

There is a gap in evidence regarding spatial clusters of the congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) and its association with social and health indicators in the Brazilian territory. Thus, we aimed herein to identify CT risk areas in Brazil and its association with social vulnerability and health indicators. An ecological and population-based study was conducted. The CT incidence coefficient was calculated and smoothed using the Local Empirical Bayesian method. Global regression models and local spatial regression model were applied. High-incidence clusters of the disease were identified throughout the …

Vulnerability Intersections: An Integrative Conceptual Framework for Understanding Vulnerability in AI-Assisted Care for Older Adults.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications are increasingly used to support independent living and care for older adults, particularly those in vulnerable situations. Yet, how vulnerability is constructed when AI enters later-life care remains poorly theorized. Existing approaches to vulnerability in old age inadequately address AI-related risks, structural conditions, exposure pathways, and life course disadvantages. Using a theory-synthesis approach, this article proposes "vulnerability intersections" as an integrative framework for how vulnerability is constructed, enacted, and negotiated in

Teaching about vulnerable populations: nursing students' experience in a homeless center.

Cultural competence is not limited to ethnicity, religion, or race but is inclusive of vulnerable groups, such as the homeless. The complex health and social issues related to homelessness requires educational instruction that supports students' ability to address and care for the multidimensional elements that surround this group. Exposure to homeless populations provides nursing students with increased awareness of the issues related to health disparities, while promoting introspective reflection on one's values and beliefs. To increase student exposure to working with homeless clients, a se

Investigating pathological narcissism and loneliness, and the link with life satisfaction.

Loneliness is a significant health concern that may be influenced by dispositional features. Pathological narcissism may elevate loneliness through aversive interpersonal behaviors and negative social appraisals. The present study examined two dimensions of pathological narcissism, along with five-factor personality traits, in relation to loneliness among 120 young adults. Loneliness was also examined as a mediator between pathological narcissism and satisfaction with life. Narcissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability were both significantly associated with loneliness. Multiple regr
