A 13-month-old female spayed Russian blue cat was presented for acute respiratory distress. Thoracic radiographs revealed signs of left-sided congestive heart failure with pulmonary oedema, and the echocardiogram showed left ventricular myocardial thickening and concurrent left atrial dilation. In the first hours following admission, in addition to the classic management of congestive heart failure, dobutamine was used because of hypotension. The cat was discharged five days after admission with a prescription of furosemide 1.11 mg/kg PO q 12 h and pimobendan 0.15 mg/kg PO q 12 h. An echocardi

A 12-year-old, 19.8-kg, female neutered Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever was referred for investigation of a heart murmur. The dog was asymptomatic at the time of examination. On cardiac auscultation, a soft (2/6) diastolic heart murmur, louder at the left cardiac base, was present. Two-dimensional transthoracic echocardiography revealed a cyst-like structure attached to the aortic valve leaflets. Doppler examination showed that the cyst was fluid-filled and connected to the aortic and ventricular lumen. A moderate aortic valve insufficiency was also present. The left heart was mildly dilate

An 11-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel with a previous diagnosis of preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD) was presented with respiratory distress and abdominal distension. Lung edema and ascites were diagnosed. Echocardiography revealed a progression of the MMVD as it was associated with a moderate enlargement of the left-sided cardiac chambers and an atrial septal defect (ASD). The latter was hypothesized to be primarily due to a rupture of the interatrial septum caused by MMVD. Moreover, a hyperechoic irregular mass was documented inside the left atrium. At that time, the

A six-month-old intact female domestic shorthair cat was presented to the Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center for further evaluation of a heart murmur. On echocardiography, a large, left-to-right shunting ventricular septal defect was identified. There was evidence of severe left heart volume overload, increased pulmonary artery flow and tricuspid regurgitation velocities, mild mitral regurgitation, and left-sided congestive heart failure. The presence of relative pulmonary stenosis, pulmonary hypertension, and a mitral valve malformation were suspected, but further echocardiograph

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Mitral regurgitation (MR) is often caused by myxomatous mitral valve disease which affects many small-breed dogs, including Chihuahua dogs. The aim of the study was to assess the prevalence of MR and tricuspid regurgitation (TR), valvular thickening, and prolapse in a group of apparently healthy Chihuahua dogs.
ANIMALS, MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ninety-seven privately owned Chihuahua dogs, recruited via the Swedish Chihuahua Club, were included in the study. A prospective observational study was conducted where clinical examinations, electrocardiograms, and echocardiogra

A seven-year-old male neutered domestic shorthaired cat underwent surgical placement of a permanent epicardial pacemaker following diagnosis of intermittent second and third degree atrioventricular block, which was responsible for 'seizure-like' episodes. Although the pacemaker implant was successful, the cat started experiencing near-syncopal episodes approximately one year after surgery. Ambulatory Holter recording showed periods of loss of capture. Therefore, the pacemaker was interrogated using incremental energy output, which did not evoke any capture, even at the highest possible pulse v

Five dogs and two cats with a diagnosis of double-chambered right ventricle or primary infundibular stenosis were referred to undergo a combined cutting balloon and high-pressure balloon technique. At admission five cases were asymptomatic, one had a history of syncope and one had signs of right-sided congestive heart failure. Each patient underwent a complete transthoracic echocardiogram, thoracic radiographs, an angiogram and the combined interventional procedure. Median diameter of the right mid-ventricular stenosis was 4 mm (range 2-8.7 mm) in dogs, and it measured 1.9 and 2 mm in cats. Un

A dog with immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and a new heart murmur had an echocardiogram in 2016 and was found to have a suspected aorto-left atrial fistula. The echocardiogram findings remained relatively static from 2016 to 2022. This report highlights the use of cardiac-gated computed tomography angiography to allow further understanding of a complex anomaly in a patient with a ruptured sinus of Valsalva aneurysm causing a fistulous connection with the left atrium.

INTRODUCTION: Loss of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA) is a negative prognostic factor in dogs with myxomatous mitral valve disease (MMVD). The aim of this study was to calculate the percentage (%) of RSA in healthy dogs and dogs in various MMVD classes.
ANIMALS: Control and MMVD dogs were prospectively included in the study.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Respiratory sinus arrhythmia was calculated from a dual channel electrocardiography and breathing curve recording using the peak-to-trough method, in percent of the average heart rate.
RESULTS: One hundred and forty-nine dogs were studied, incl

An 18-year-old female neutered Domestic Shorthair cat was referred for investigation of seizure-like episodes. Physical and neurological examination were unremarkable, as were systemic arterial blood pressure, cardiac troponin I, complete blood count and biochemistry profile. Diagnostic tests included transthoracic echocardiography which ruled out any structural cardiomyopathy, and electrocardiography which showed an underlying regular wide QRS-complex rhythm with pronounced shortening of the PR interval. Considering the findings, a diagnosis of suspected ventricular pre-excitation secondary t

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Ventricular pre-excitation (VPE) occurs when atrial electrical impulses prematurely excite the ventricles through an aberrant muscle bundle known as an accessory pathway (AP). Orthodromic atrioventricular reciprocating tachycardia is a re-entrant, narrow complex supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), maintained through retrograde conduction over an AP. The study aimed to describe patient signalments, clinical signs, electrocardiographic (ECG) and diagnostic imaging features, treatments, prognostic variables, and outcomes in cats with ECG diagnosis of VPE.

Two juvenile (five- and 10-month-old), male, neutered, Jack Russel terrier cross dogs, each presented primarily for respiratory signs of varying severity, were included in the study. The first presented for coughing and weakness, and the other presented in respiratory distress. A cardiac murmur was absent in both. Imaging findings were strikingly similar for both dogs. Thoracic radiography revealed severe, disproportionate left atrial dilation with otherwise normal cardiac silhouette shape and size. Echocardiography revealed severe left ventricular mural thickening with hypertrabeculation and

A seven-year-old male castrated Labrador Retriever presented emergently due to concern for pacemaker malfunction five years after successful transvenous pacemaker implantation to treat partial atrial standstill. On presentation, the dog's pulse rate was 30-50 beats per minute. An electrocardiogram showed no spontaneous atrial activity or paced ventricular activity. Pacemaker interrogation revealed an increased impedance of 7557 ohms, indicating a lead malfunction. Thoracic radiographs confirmed the lead was fractured and had excessive coiling. The transvenous pacing system was turned off, left
