Critical review of artificial intelligence in synthetic biology: DBTL cycle applications, challenges, and design rules for microbial strain engineering.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the field of synthetic biology research. This approach has the potential to make the design-build-test-learn (DBTL) cycle more predictable by improving design prioritization, experimental planning, and data analysis. This review aims to analyze the application of artificial intelligence (AI), including machine learning (ML), deep learning (DL), and language models, across synthetic biology, specifically neural networks for genetic circuit design, protein engineering, metabolic pathway optimization, and multi-omics data analysis. The main focus is to ide

Ecological Vision Hypothesis: Training Deep Neural Networks for Robustness and Human Alignment.

Deep neural networks (DNNs) offer highly promising neurocomputational models of the visual system, yet vast gaps remain between DNNs and human observers. By some accounts, DNNs are approaching near ceiling levels in their ability to predict human neural responses to clear real-world images. However, even modest diversions toward more ambiguous viewing conditions can readily expose the brittle and inflexible nature of these networks. Human vision remains robust when faced with noise, blur, occlusion, and other challenges, whereas DNNs trained to classify large image datasets typically lack such

Few-shot neuromorphic vision in a nonlinear photonic network laser.

With the growing prevalence of artificial intelligence (AI), demand increases for hardware that mimics the brain's ability to extract structure from limited data. In the retina, ganglion cells detect features from sparse inputs via lateral inhibition, where neurons antagonistically suppress activity of neighboring cells. Biological neurons exhibit diverse heterogeneous nonlinear responses, linked to robust learning and strong performance in low-data regimes. Here, we introduce a retinally inspired photonic computing system where spatially competing lasing modes in a random network laser act as

Developing a binary communication protocol between biological neural networks using virtual white matter.

Objective.Biological neural networks (BNNs) are composed of interconnected neurons, where a single neuron may connect to thousands of other neurons, and this interregional connectivity enables distributed computation across multiple nodes. Biocomputing exploits these inherent processing capabilities of neural tissue for computational tasks. However, mostin vitrobiocomputing systems rely on isolated neural cultures that may not be suitable for complex multi-network processing tasks. Building scalable biocomputing architectures requires reliable communication frameworks between physically separa

Metastatic alveolar soft part sarcoma presenting as a dural-based cerebral mass.

Sarcoma metastatic to the brain is uncommon and rarely occurs as the initial manifestation of tumor. Alveolar soft-part sarcoma, a rare but well studied subtype of a soft tissue sarcoma with a propensity for central nervous system invasion, presenting with brain metastases, has been reported only once previously. We report the case of a 28-year-old man who presented with partial seizures and who was found to have a homogeneously enhancing frontal lesion on a broad dural base disclosed by computed tomography. preoperatively, the lesion was thought to be a meningioma. The tumor was excised easil

Extensive fibrotic wrapping of the heart: a rare echocardiographic diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Fibrosing mediastinitis (FM) is considered a benign disease, but it can be fatal if progression leads to compression of the hilum of the lungs or invasion of the heart. Echocardiographic reports of this disease are very rare. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a 14-year-old male patient whose non-enhanced chest computed tomography showed unclear soft-tissue dense lesions in the anterior superior mediastinum. Echocardiography showed the heart was extensively wrapped by soft tissue lesions. The histology confirmed FM. CONCLUSIONS: When FM affects the heart, echocardiography can help to

Incidental Finding of Secondary Tumoral Calcinosis Following Cardiothoracic Surgery: The Role of Multimodality Imaging Including Spectral Detector Computed Tomography.

Tumoral calcinosis is a rare syndrome that affects mostly soft tissues. It is characterized by calcium salt deposition in the periarticular soft tissue surrounding bony structures forming slow-growing, seldom asymptomatic masses. This case report describes a 41-year-old male with end-stage renal disease on home hemodialysis, who presented with an unusual rapidly progressive mass overlying the manubrium and suprasternal notch, following recent cardiothoracic surgery, which was initially felt to be a hematoma. The case highlights the role of spectral detector computed tomography (SDCT) in reachi

Round cell liposarcoma arising in the left foot: MRI and PET findings.

Liposarcomas are one of the most common soft-tissue sarcomas and commonly arise in the deep soft tissues of the extremities and retroperitoneum; however, the occurrence of liposarcomas in the foot or ankle is exceedingly rare. In this article, we present a 52-year-old man with round cell liposarcoma arising in the left foot. This tumor presented unusual manifestations of secondary osseous involvement in the metatarsal and tarsal bones of the left foot and solitary lymph node metastasis at the para-aortic region. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and [(18)F]-fluoro-deoxy-glucose positron emissio

[Sport injuries of the extensor mechanism of the knee].

Injuries of the extensor mechanism of the knee occur frequently during sport activity. For a successful treatment they must be diagnosed early. Besides osseous structures the patellar tendon, the patella, the quadriceps muscle and tendon, retinacula and bursae can be affected. After initial clinical examination there are different noninvasive imaging modalities available for assessment of bone, cartilage, ligaments, tendons and soft tissue. Conventional radiographs are still the basic imaging tool for the clinician. Additional information about the osseous status is provided by computed tomogr

Chest wall subcutaneous mass leading to the diagnosis of pericostal tuberculosis.

When diagnosing a chest wall mass, even in the absence of pulmonary lesions, it is crucial to consider pericostal tuberculosis as a differential diagnosis. Attention must be paid to the characteristic findings on contrast-enhanced computed tomography, such as central low attenuation, peripheral rim enhancement of soft tissue, and pleural involvement.

Retroperitoneal actinomycosis with intraperitoneal spread. Stellate pattern on CT.

We report a case of pathologically proved actinomycosis that presented unusual computed tomographic (CT) features: a soft-tissue retroperitoneal mass encasing the adjacent ureter resulting in hydronephrosis and spreading into the intraperitoneal space with a stellate pattern. The role of CT in monitoring the response to antibiotic treatment is also discussed.

Imaging characteristics of phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors.

BACKGROUND: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare paraneoplastic syndrome associated with phosphaturic mesenchymal tumors (PMTs). Localization of the causative tumor in these cases is an arduous task since the culprit lesions are usually small, slow-growing, and can be located almost anywhere from head to toe. PURPOSE: To describe the morphological characteristics of histologically proven PMTs on various radiological modalities. MATERIAL AND METHODS: After institutional ethical approval, this retrospective study analyzed 20 cases with a histopathological evidence of PMT. Various imaging

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY OF CUTANEOUS MYIASIS IN AN ORNATE BOX TURTLE (TERRAPENE ORNATA ORNATA).

A juvenile intact female ornate box turtle (Terrapene ornata ornata) was referred for evaluation of right-sided appendicular swelling that was nonresponsive to antimicrobial therapy. Computed tomography (CT) revealed severe soft tissue swelling of the limbs and neck, with multiple associated tortuous gas-filled sinus tracts extending from the cutaneous surface, which contained oblong soft tissue attenuating structures. These CT findings were most consistent with migrating dipterous larvae. Surgical exploration was performed and six sarcophagid larvae (Superfamily Oestroidea) were extracted. To

A case of postsurgical necrotizing fasciitis invading the rectus abdominis muscle and review of the literature.

Necrotizing fasciitis is a life-threatening, soft tissue infection and an early diagnosis is needed to permit a prompt surgical and medical intervention. Due to the high fatal potential of the disease complications, the radiologist should distinguish necrotizing fasciitis from the most common soft tissue infections, in order to permit a prompt surgical and medical treatment. We present a case of a wide necrotizing fasciitis who presented at our emergency department and we also provide the basic tools, through a review of the literature, for the general radiologist to distinguish, with computed

Musculoskeletal interventional ultrasound.

Ultrasound is a nonionizing, low-cost, portable imaging technique for the evaluation of tendons, muscles, joints, soft tissue masses, and cysts, especially in patients unable to tolerate computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. These advantages make ultrasound an ideal modality for guiding musculoskeletal interventions. Its real-time capabilities allow continuous observation of needle placement into the targeted area and direct visualization of interventions such as injection of medication while avoiding other soft tissue structures or nearby neurovascular bundles. After a brief over

Nasal asymmetry changes during growth and development in 6- to 12-year-old children with repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate: A 3D computed tomography analysis.

Repaired unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is often accompanied by the deformity and asymmetry of the nasal region. Three-dimensional analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between nasal soft- and hard-tissue asymmetries, as well as the changes in nasal asymmetry with age, among children with repaired UCLP (age: 6-12 years). Forty-seven patients were included in this study. Their computed tomography records were retrieved for analysis of the 3D asymmetry of 10 landmarks of the nasal soft and hard tissues. We observed that asymmetry was more severe in nasal hard tissues tha

Relationship of craniofacial morphology in 3-dimensional analysis of the pharynx.

INTRODUCTION: Pharynx dimensions may vary according to the position and morphology of the mandible. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that craniofacial morphology affects pharyngeal volume and its cross-sectional areas. METHODS: Seventy-four subjects (38 men, 36 women) aged 18 to 56 years (mean ± SD 32.8 ± 1.8 years) were scanned with a cone-beam computed tomography unit and had facial profile photographs taken. All participants were classified according to skeletal anteroposterior (Class II and Class III) and vertical facial patterns (brachyfacial, mesofacial, and dolichofacia

Three-dimensional computed tomography analysis of airway volume changes between open and closed jaw positions.

INTRODUCTION: Airway dimensions are closely linked to the bone and soft-tissue craniofacial anatomy. Reduction of the airway is seen with airway disorders and can impair function. The purpose of this retrospective study was to determine whether changing from open to closed jaw position affects the volume of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and oropharynx; the soft palate; the soft-tissue thickness of the airway; and the most constricted area of the airway. METHODS: Following reliability studies, in this retrospective study, we analyzed cone-beam computed tomography scans taken in both closed an

Computed tomographic features of severe horn infection in a male Scimitar-horned oryx (Oryx dammah).

A 3-year-old male Scimitar-horned oryx presented for evaluation of an acutely deformed right horn with right head tilt and right facial pain. Computed tomographic evaluation revealed an increased volume of central fluid/soft tissue attenuation with gas-attenuating foci within the right horn. The right horn was amputated at the right horn base. Imaging and histopathologic features were consistent with emphysematous osteomyelitis. Following treatment, the patient returned to normal behavior. This is the first veterinary report describing the computed tomographic features of a horn infection in a
