Supercritical fluid extraction of aflatoxin B(1) from soil.

This research describes the development of a supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method to recover aflatoxin B(1) from fortified soil. The effects of temperature, pressure, modifier (identity and percentage), and extraction type were assessed. Using the optimized SFE conditions, the mean recovery from air dried soil was 72%. The variables associated with changes in recovery of aflatoxin were co-solvents, static extraction, and temperature. Acetonitrile-2% acetic acid, used both in-cell and on-line, provided the most efficient recovery. The results indicate that desorption from the soil was th…

Long-term persistence of virulent Yersinia pestis in soil.

Plague is characterized by geographical foci from which it re-emerges after decades of silence, a fact currently explained by enzootic and epizootic cycles between plague-susceptible and plague-resistant rodents. To assess the potential role of soil in plague epidemiology, we experimentally investigated whether Yersinia pestis could persist alive and virulent in soil. Sterilized soil inoculated with virulent Y. pestis biotype Orientalis was regularly sampled for 40 weeks in duplicate. Each sample was observed by acridine orange staining and immunofluorescence using an anti-Y. pestis polyclonal…

Acoustic indicators for mapping infestation probabilities of soil invertebrates.

Acoustic and traditional excavation methods were used in consecutive summers to conduct two geospatial surveys of distributions of white grubs and other soil invertebrates in two forage fields. Indicator variables were constructed from listener- and computer-based assessments of sounds detected at each recording site and then applied in geostatistical analysis, contingency analysis, and spatial analysis of distance indices (SADIE) of soil invertebrate distributions. Significant relationships were identified between the acoustic indicators and the counts of sound-producing soil invertebrates in…

Isolation and characterization of alachlor-degrading actinomycetes from soil.

Alachlor (2-cloro-N-(methoxymethyl)-N-(2,6-diethylphenyl)-acetamide) is an extremely toxic and highly mobile herbicide that is widely used for pre-emergence control of grasses and weeds in many commercial crops in Brazil. In order to select soil actinomycetes able to degrade this herbicide, fifty-three actinomycete strains were isolated from soil treated with alachlor using selective conditions and subjected to in vitro degradation assays. Sixteen isolates were shown to be tolerant to high concentrations of the herbicide (up to 720 mg L(-1)), and six of these were able to grow and degrade >/= …

Vapor-phase exchange of perchloroethene between soil and plants.

Tree core concentrations of tetrachloroethylene (perchloroethene, PCE) at the Riverfront Superfund Site in New Haven, MO, were found to mimic the profile of soil phase concentrations. The observed soil-tree core relationship was stronger than that of groundwater PCE to tree core concentrations atthe same site. Earlier research has shown a direct, linear relationship between tree core and groundwater concentrations of chlorinated solvents and other organics. Laboratory-scale experiments were performed to elucidate this phenomenon, including determining partitioning coefficients of PCE between p…

Effects of pesticides on yeasts isolated from agricultural soil.

The effect of six various pesticides on the growth of yeasts isolated from agricultural soil was investigated. Two herbicides (with the effective substances lactofen and metazachlor), two fungicides (with the effective substances fluquinconazole and prochloraz), and two insecticides (with the effective substances cypermethrin + chlorpyrifos and triazamate) were tested. It is evident that there are considerable differences in inhibition effects of studied pesticides. The fungicide with the effective substance prochloraz inhibited the growth of majority of yeast strains. The insecticide triazama…

Canada1Water: Hydraulic parametrized integrated soil, bedrock and peatlands datasets.

The Canada1Water (C1W) initiative is a national-scale effort to model Canada's hydrologic cycle, integrating groundwater, surface water, and climate influences across continental Canada and shared watersheds with the United States. Soil, bedrock, and peatlands critically connect atmospheric processes, vegetation, and hydrology. Infiltration and recharge are governed by the hydraulic properties and topographic and pressure gradients, making accurate representation of surficial substrates essential in hydrological modelling. For continental-scale groundwater-surface water modelling in Canada, a …

Reconciling nitrogen fertilization effects on soil nitrification with acidification.

Nitrogen (N) fertilization supports nearly half of the global population but disrupts the N cycle. While N addition is assumed to stimulate soil nitrification by increasing substrate supply and nitrifier activity, it may also inhibit nitrification via soil acidification. Resolving this paradox is key to understanding the nitrification response to N addition (βnit). Using a global dataset, we show that βnit is best explained by final soil pH and ecosystem type. The βnit-pH relationship is positive in croplands, weak in forests, and negative in grasslands. Notably, βnit shifts from negative to p…

Rice Cultivation Reshapes Mercury Accumulation in Soil-Plant Systems.

Predicting the bioaccumulation of potent neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) in rice is essential for assessing and mitigating human exposure risks, particularly for Asians and infants. However, significant uncertainties lie in understanding and predicting MeHg accumulation in rice, partially due to the insufficient understanding of how rice plants regulate Hg biogeochemistry in soil-rice systems. Here, we conducted a pot experiment involving 32 commonly cultivated rice varieties under the same soil and ambient conditions. By analyzing MeHg contents in rice-paddy systems and amino acid profiles in…

Global burden of soil-transmitted helminth infections, 1990-2021.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections can cause a significant disease burden. It is estimated that 1.5 billion people worldwide are infected with STHs, primarily in tropical and subtropical regions. This study aimed to assess the distribution of the global burden and trend of STH infections from 1990 to 2021. METHODS: We retrieved data from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2021 on the age-standardized rates (ASRs) of prevalence and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) of STH infections for all age groups in 204 countries and territories from 1…

Soil metabolomics: Deciphering underground metabolic webs in terrestrial ecosystems.

Soil metabolomics is an emerging approach for profiling diverse small molecule metabolites, i.e., metabolomes, in the soil. Soil metabolites, including fatty acids, amino acids, lipids, organic acids, sugars, and volatile organic compounds, often contain essential nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur and are directly linked to soil biogeochemical cycles driven by soil microorganisms. This paper presents an overview of methods for analyzing soil metabolites and the state-of-the-art of soil metabolomics in relation to soil nutrient cycling. We describe important applications of met…

Influence of root distribution patterns on soil dynamic characteristics.

Slopes along the highway and railway routes are subjected to not only static loads but also dynamic loads generated by vehicles and trains. The induced excessive deformation potentially poses a threat to slope stability. In terms of the extensive application of ecological slope protection, plants play a critical role in slope stability, as the roots can enhance the shear strength of the soil. This study aims to investigate the influence of different root distribution patterns on the dynamic characteristics induced by cyclic loading. By conducting a group of dynamic triaxial tests, the results …

Mechanochemical remediation of fluoranthene contaminated soil and biotoxicity evaluation.

A mechanochemical (MC) method was employed for the remediation of soil contaminated with fluoranthene (C16H10, FL) a four-ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) containing three benzene rings and a central five-membered heterocyclic ring, with the effects of soil inorganic components, milling conditions, and the degradation mechanism investigated. Results showed that the addition of SiO2 and kaolin to soil resulted in a greater increase in the effectiveness of FL removal than other inorganic additives. After 3 hours of milling at 500 rpm, the FL removal rate from SiO2 containing soil, re…

Screening of Indonesian peat soil bacteria producing antimicrobial compounds.

The development and world-wide spread of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria have a high concern in the medicine, especially the extended-spectrum of beta-lactamase (ESBL) producing Escherichia coli and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). There are currently very limited effective antibiotics to treat infections caused by MDR bacteria. Peat-soil is a unique environment in which bacteria have to compete each other to survive, for instance, by producing antimicrobial substances. This study aimed to isolate bacteria from peat soils from South Kalimantan Indonesia, which capable of …

Green Infrastructure Design Influences Communities of Urban Soil Bacteria.

The importance of natural ecosystem processes is often overlooked in urban areas. Green Infrastructure (GI) features have been constructed in urban areas as elements to capture and treat excess urban runoff while providing a range of ancillary benefits, e.g., ecosystem processes mediated by microorganisms that improve air and water quality, in addition to the associations with plant and tree rhizospheres. The objective of this study was to characterize the bacterial community and diversity in engineered soils (Technosols) of five types of GI in New York City; vegetated swales, right of way bio…
