Characteristics and spatio-temporal distribution of fetal loss in thoroughbred mares in New South Wales, Australia.

INTRODUCTION: Despite emerging disease syndromes in Australian Thoroughbred horses in recent years, there is no formal surveillance for fetal loss in the industry. This study aimed to characterise the distribution of equine pregnancy loss > 45 days of gestation in a major Thoroughbred breeding region to provide insights into causes, prevention, and surveillance feasibility. METHODS: Data were collected from 574 fetal loss submissions to veterinary pathology services between February 2015 and November 2021. Variables included date of fetal loss, gestational age, diagnosis, foal weight, and mar

Effect of Network Structure on the Spread of Linguistic Behavior.

Theoretical and computational models predict that social-network topology shapes the diffusion of linguistic forms, yet direct experimental evidence remains limited. Across three laboratory experiments, we tested whether network structure or seed placement influences the spread of target lexical items, while holding task demands constant. Experiment 1 compared clustered (high-transitivity) and random (low-transitivity) 12-node networks (N = 120). Experiment 2 extended this design to larger 24-node networks (N = 240). Experiment 3 provided an exploratory follow-up on seed placement within clust

Toward automated classification of pathological transcranial Doppler waveform morphology via spectral clustering.

Cerebral Blood Flow Velocity waveforms acquired via Transcranial Doppler (TCD) can provide evidence for cerebrovascular occlusion and stenosis. Thrombolysis in Brain Ischemia (TIBI) flow grades are widely used for this purpose, but require subjective assessment by expert evaluators to be reliable. In this work we seek to determine whether TCD morphology can be objectively assessed using an unsupervised machine learning approach to waveform categorization. TCD beat waveforms were recorded at multiple depths from the Middle Cerebral Arteries of 106 subjects; 33 with Large Vessel Occlusion (LVO).

Timely detection of localized excess influenza activity in Northern California across patient care, prescription, and laboratory data.

Timely detection of clusters of localized influenza activity in excess of background seasonal levels could improve situational awareness for public health officials and health systems. However, no single data type may capture influenza activity with optimal sensitivity, specificity, and timeliness, and it is unknown which data types could be most useful for surveillance. We compared the performance of 10 types of electronic clinical data for timely detection of influenza clusters throughout the 2007/08 influenza season in northern California. Kaiser Permanente Northern California generated zip

A single-cell spatiotemporal manifold of tissue morphology and dynamics.

Complex tissues are now characterizable at single-cell resolution, but the spatial logic underlying tissue organization remains challenging to access without effective single-cell spatial descriptors that allow spatiotemporal events to be organized and interactions between cells to be recognized and predicted. We present a learned single-cell embedding space of cell positions over time enabling measurement of morphology and dynamics. Learning co-processes pairs of cell point clouds sampled over time using a Transformer encoder with inter-sample attention, a strategy that promotes efficient joi

Geospatial analysis of preterm and small-for-gestational age births in Washington D.C.

BACKGROUND: This study is based on the recognition that adverse pregnancy outcomes significantly affect maternal and infant health, leading to increased morbidity and mortality. These outcomes are shaped by a complex interplay of individual-level factors—like maternal age and education—and community-level influences, including socio-economic status and access to healthcare. Understanding these determinants is crucial for developing effective public health strategies, especially for marginalized populations, by identifying high-risk areas and informing targeted interventions that address both i

TASC: a time-aware sequence clustering framework with uncertainty quantification for electronic health record trajectories.

Longitudinal electronic health record (EHR) trajectories are highly heterogeneous, sparse, and irregular, making unsupervised temporal pattern discovery and uncertainty quantification challenging. We developed a Time-Aware Sequence Clustering (TASC) framework that integrates temporal spacing, clinical semantic similarity, and probabilistic subtype characterization to identify longitudinal trajectory patterns from EHR data. We demonstrate the framework using pre-surgical musculoskeletal care trajectories preceding total knee replacement (TKR). As a proof-of-concept application, we applied TASC

Electrocorticographic Network Feature Space Constriction as a Preictal Biomarker.

In patients with epilepsy, seizures are associated with pathological neural synchronization. However, the preictal period preceding a seizure often exhibits reduced spatial synchronization compared to normal cognition. This observation aligns with the concept of the brain as a complex dynamical system, where a reduction in dimensionality and resilience can precede a phase transition. The Critical Brain Hypothesis suggests a connection between the loss of healthy scale-free behavior and various disorders, including epilepsy. Our study investigates preictal changes by utilizing network features,

Isosbestic points in time resolved SAXS: from spectroscopic analogy to model free structural markers during colloidal gelation.

Gelation is the transition from a fluid state into a system-spanning, out of equilibrim soft-solid network through a hierarchical process that couples local particle interactions to mesoscopic clustering and global connectivity. In time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), isosbestic points-scattering wavevectors where scattering intensity remains invariant-emerge during this transformation, yet their physical meaning has remained unclear. Here, we show that two isosbestic points, q1 and q2, observed during salt-induced gelation of Ludox colloids, reflect fundamental structural constr

Linearizing and Forecasting: A Reservoir Computing Route to Digital Twins of the Brain.

Exploring the dynamics of complex systems such as the human brain is challenging due to inherent uncertainties and the limited availability of high-quality data. Here, we develop a mathematical theory for noisy linear recurrent neural networks (lRNNs) within the reservoir computing framework and demonstrate their effectiveness in constructing autonomous in silico replicas - digital-twins - of brain activity. We show that the Laplace-transform poles of high-dimensional inferred lRNNs directly encode the spectral properties of observed systems and are linked to the kernels of auto-regressive mod

Long-term histopathological developments in knee-joint components in a rat model of osteoarthritis induced by monosodium iodoacetate.

[Purpose] This study was performed to evaluate the long-term histopathological changes in knee-joint components including synovial membrane and joint capsule in a rat model of osteoarthritis (OA) induced by monosodium iodoacetate (MIA). [Subjects and Methods] Fifty male rats were used. OA was induced through intra-articular injection of MIA, and ten rats were randomly allocated to each of five groups induced with OA for 1, 2, 4, 6, or 8 weeks. At the end of each period, the knee components were examined histopathologically. [Results] After 1 and 2 weeks, chondrocytes were weakly stained. After

Environmental factors and childhood acute leukemias and lymphomas.

This review considers recent studies regarding the role of environmental factors in the etiology of childhood leukemia and lymphoma. Potential environmental risk factors identified for childhood leukemia include exposure to magnetic fields of more than 0.4 micro Tessla, exposure to pesticides, solvents, benzene and other hydrocarbons, maternal alcohol consumption (but only for certain genotypes), contaminated drinking water, infections, and high birth weight. The finding of space-time clustering and seasonal variation also supports a role for infections. There is little evidence linking childh…

Tuberculosis incidence in Portugal: spatiotemporal clustering.

BACKGROUND: The statistics of disease clustering is one of the most important tools for epidemiologists to detect and monitor public health disease patterns. Nowadays, tuberculosis (TB)--an infectious disease caused by the Mycobacterium tuberculosis--presents different (development in populations and antibiotics resistance) patterns and specialists are very concerned with it and its association to several other diseases and factors. Each year, tuberculosis kills about three million people in the world. In particular, it is responsible for the death of more than one-third of HIV-infected people

A genomic footprint of hybrid zone movement in crested newts.

Speciation typically involves a stage in which species can still exchange genetic material. Interspecific gene flow is facilitated by the hybrid zones that such species establish upon secondary contact. If one member of a hybridizing species pair displaces the other, their hybrid zone would move across the landscape. Although theory predicts that moving hybrid zones quickly stagnate, hybrid zones tracked over one or a few decades do not always follow such a limitation. This suggests that hybrid zones have the potential to traverse considerable distances over extended periods of time. When hybr

Two-Layer Ultra-Wideband Localization: Scalability for Dense Wearable Motion Capture.

A recurrent challenge in scaling ultra-wideband (UWB) motion-capture systems is interference management when many ranging transactions coexist in time and space. To address this, we study a two-layer localization architecture that separates field-level player localization from local on-body pose tracking, allowing the two tasks to operate with different communication regimes and spatial-reuse policies. A stochastic-geometry framework is used to map sport-dependent parameters, including player density, field size, tag count, anchor count, update rates, and ranging airtime, to reliability and up

"Epidemic clones" of Listeria monocytogenes are widespread and ancient clonal groups.

The food-borne pathogen Listeria monocytogenes is genetically heterogeneous. Although some clonal groups have been implicated in multiple outbreaks, there is currently no consensus on how "epidemic clones" should be defined. The objectives of this work were to compare the patterns of sequence diversity on two sets of genes that have been widely used to define L. monocytogenes clonal groups: multilocus sequence typing (MLST) and multi-virulence-locus sequence typing (MvLST). Further, we evaluated the diversity within clonal groups by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). Based on 125 isolate

Using geographic information systems and spatial and space-time scan statistics for a population-based risk analysis of the 2002 equine West Nile epidemic in six contiguous regions of Texas.

BACKGROUND: In 2002, West Nile virus (WNV) first appeared in Texas. Surveillance data were retrospectively examined to explore the temporal and spatial characteristics of the Texas equine WNV epidemic in 2002. Using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and the Spatial and Space-Time Scan (SaTScan) statistics, we analyzed 1421 of the reported equine WNV cases from six contiguous state Health Service Regions (HSRs), comprising 158 counties, in western, northern, central and eastern Texas. RESULTS: Two primary epidemic peaks occurred in Epidemiological (Epi) week 35 (August 25 to 31) and Epi wee

AI-guided real-time detection of flow irregularities and bottlenecks in pharmaceutical vial filling lines using vision-based models.

AIM/BACKGROUND: Ensuring smooth and consistent vial flow on pharmaceutical filling line conveyors is essential for maintaining sterility, reducing downtime, and avoiding costly disruptions. However, irregular vial movement such as spacing gaps, clustering, and vial flipping is often seen, leading to filling delays, broken glass, machine stoppages, and extended batch times. Existing systems lack the ability to detect such irregularities in real time and provide actionable alerts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A lightweight, AI-guided framework was developed for detecting vial flow irregularities and

Impact of infusion conditions and anesthesia on CSF tracer dynamics in mouse brain.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI has become an invaluable tool for mapping cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow and delineating solute transport pathways in the brain. However, the influence of experimental parameters, including infusion location, infusion rate, and anesthetic regimen, on tracer transport kinetics and distribution patterns remains incompletely characterized, potentially confounding interpretation of results. METHODS: We investigated the impact of infusion parameters on tracer transport in mice using Gd-DTPA as a CSF tracer. The effect of infusion rate was assessed by admini
