Novel thiomaleimide-based fluorescent probe with aggregation-induced emission for detecting H2S.

It has been well established that Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is involved in various pathophysiological processes. Therefore, accurate monitoring H2S levels in vitro or vivo is of great significance in biological systems. Herein, we firstly developed a thiomaleimide-based compound MAL-1 bearing aggregation-induced emission characteristic for selective response toward H2S due to its nucleophilicity. The proposed sensor presented prominent sensitivity and selectivity with low detection limit of 75 nM and pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of 9.65 × 10-2 s-1, as well as low cytotoxicity which w

Host-guest interaction of tryptophane with acid-functionalized calix[4]pyrrole: a fluorescence-based study.

Functionalized calix[4]pyrroles are at forefront of host-guest aided molecular sensors. They offer unique platform for flexible functionalization to develop receptors suitable for different applications. In this context, calix[4]pyrrole derivative (TACP) was functionalized with an acidic group to investigate its binding behavior with different amino acids. The acid functionalization facilitated host-guest interactions through hydrogen bonding and increase the solubility of ligand in 90% aqueous media. The results indicated that TACP exhibited significant fluorescence enhancement in the presenc

A sensitive multicolor fluorescence sensing strategy for chlorotetracycline based on bovine serum albumin-stabilized copper nanocluster.

Fluorescent probes with on-site visual detection function have received extensive attention in the detection of chlortetracycline (CTC), which was widely used in aquaculture and animal husbandry. Copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with excellent optical properties were prepared using bovine serum albumin (BSA) as a template, and a multicolor fluorescence strategy based on BSA-stabilized Cu NCs (BSA-Cu NCs) for detecting CTC was proposed. BSA-Cu NCs had a red emission at 640 nm. After the addition of CTC, the red emission of BSA-Cu NCs gradually decreased for internal filtering effect, while the gree

A multi-signal mitochondria-targeted fluorescent probe for simultaneously distinguishing biothiols and realtime visualizing its metabolism in cancer cells and tumor models.

Biothiols and its metabolite SO2 derivatives play vital roles in various physiological processes. Although a few probes have been designed for monitoring the metabolism of biothiols, developing multi-signal fluorescent probes with practicability for simultaneously distinguishing biothiols (GSH, Cys and Hcy) and real-time visualizing SO2 derivatives is an enormous challenge. To better visualize biothiols metabolism in vitro and vivo, we developed a novel multi-signal NIR fluorescent probe (probe 2) with mitochondria-targeted for distinguishing biothiols and its metabolism, based on an ICT-PET s

Novel selective "on-off" fluorescence sensor based on julolidine hydrazone-Al3+ complex for Cu2+ ion: DFT study.

A hydrazone (T1) was synthesized by reacting 8-hydroxyjulolidine-9-carboxaldehyde with 2-furoic hydrazide and then modified with Al3+ ion to form a novel hydrazone Al3+ complex (T1-Al3+) in an aqueous solution (8% propylene glycol in 10 mM HEPES pH 5.5). The T1-Al3+ complex was studied as a Cu2+ selective sensor due to its highly efficient capacibility of paramagnetic quenching. The results showed that the T1-Al3+ complexed sensor possesses remarkable sensitivity and selectivity for Cu2+ ion in 8% propylene glycol in 10 mM HEPES pH 5.5 as compared with other tested analytes. Notably, this sens

Surface Preparation for Single-Molecule Fluorescence Imaging in Organic Solvents.

The development of single-molecule techniques provides opportunities to investigate the properties and heterogeneities of individual molecules, which are almost impossible to be obtained in ensemble measurements. Recently, single-molecule fluorescence microscopy is being applied more and more to study chemical reactions in organic solvents. However, little has been done to optimize the surface preparation procedures for single-molecule fluorescence imaging in organic solvents. In this work, we developed a method to prepare the surface for single-molecule fluorescence imaging in organic solvent

Zinc Ion-Based Switch-on Fluorescence-Sensing Probes for the Detection of Tetracycline.

Tetracycline (TC) is an antibiotic that has been widely used in the animal husbandry. Thus, TC residues may be found in animal products. Developing simple and sensitive methods for rapid screening of TC in complex samples is of great importance. Herein, we demonstrate a fluorescence-sensing method using Zn2+ as sensing probes for the detection of TC. Although TC can emit fluorescence under the excitation of ultraviolet light, its fluorescence is weak because of dynamic intramolecular rotations, leading to the dissipation of excitation energy. With the addition of Zn2+ prepared in tris(hydroxym

Response surface methodology optimization for the synthesis of N, S-codoped carbon dots and its application for tetracyclines detection.

In this study, using a convenient one-pot microwave-assisted method, we rapidly fabricated a N, S-codoped fluorescent carbon dots (NSCDs) through using citric acid (CA) and d-penicillamine (DPA) for the detection of tetracyclines (TC). To rapidly and efficiently optimize the various synthesis parameters and significantly decrease the number of experimental runs, the effect of the synthesis factors on quantum yield (QY) by NSCDs was implemented through means of response surface methodology (RSM). The as-synthesized NSCDs presented superior photoluminescence stability with a strong quantum yield

A novel nanostructured organic framework sensor for selective and sensitive detection of doxycycline based on fluorescence enhancement.

It is critical for human health to develop sensitive and rapid analytical methods for detecting doxycycline (DOX) residues in food. This paper presents a novel metal-organic framework nanomaterial (Zn-MOF) based on dithiodiglycolic acid and its application in DOX detection by fluorescent probe method. Zn-MOF itself does not fluoresce. When DOX is added, the system exhibits strong fluorescence (100-fold) at 530 nm. The fluorescence intensity displayed an excellent linear relationship with DOX concentration with a detection limit of 2.7 nM. The reaction solution's fluorescence displayed a visibl

Monitoring cell viability in N-nitrosodiethylamine induced acute hepatitis and detection of hydrazine in solution and gas phase with Dual-function fluorescent probes.

The highly toxic N-nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) and hydrazine (N2H4) caused severe environmental contamination and serious health risks. Herein, we designed the two-photon ratiometric fluorescent probe (Nap-2), emission maximum shifted from 466 nm to 571 nm, to monitor cell viability of NDEA induced acute hepatitis via esterase activity detection. Furthermore, the probe Nap-2 evaluate the hydrazine (N2H4) content in the solution and gas phase. It is worth mentioning that we used NDEA induced acute hepatitis in the mice and evaluated the negative correlation of esterase activity in the tissue cel

Visual detection of S2- with a paper-based fluorescence sensor coated with CdTe quantum dots via headspace sampling.

A simple method was developed in this work for facile and visual detection of S2- using a paper-based fluorescence (FL) sensor coated with CdTe quantum dots (QDs) by headspace sampling. With the addition of hydrochloric acid, the target S2- in the liquid phase would transform to H2 S, which was released to headspace and quenched the FL of CdTe QDs in a linear manner through a gas-solid reaction, with any possible liquid-phase interference avoided. The regular quenching caused by S2- in analyte solution with increased concentration could be easily observed by the naked eye, and the limit of det

Turn-on, photostable, nontoxic and specific, iron(II) sensor.

The pressing need to develop a specific analytical sensor that can identify and quantify Fe(II) without a cytotoxic response was the major motivation drive in this work. The turn-on fluorescent sensor here described can successfully detect Fe(II) and discriminate this ion from other analytes that commonly act as interferents in biological media. Moreover, this reduced fluoresceinamine-based sensor has a high photostability and high dissociation constant, which is an indication that the complex obtained between reduced fluoresceinamine (RFL) and Fe(II) is highly stable. This fluorescence-based

Detection of hazardous mercury ion using [5]helicene-based fluorescence probe with "TurnON" sensing response for practical applications.

A new fluorescence probe based on [5]helicene derivative (MT) was designed and synthesized. The chemical structure of the probe was fully characterized by NMR, mass spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. MT which is the combination of thioamide[5]helicene with Schiff base-thiophene moiety, exhibited a high selectivity to detect Hg2+ through irreversible desulfurization reaction with "TurnON" fluorescence response and large Stokes shift of 110 nm in aqueous methanol solution. The detection limit of MT was 1.2 ppb (6.0 × 10-3 µM), which is lower than the limit of Hg2+ level in drinking water, a

Fluorescent DNA-templated silver nanoclusters for highly sensitive detection of D-penicillamine.

Herein, fluorescent DNA-templated silver nanoclusters (DNA-AgNCs) with red emission were synthesized and utilized as novel probe to detect D-penicillamine (D-Pen) for the first time. D-Pen molecules contain a thiol which can combine with Ag to form a non-fluorescent ground state complex, inducing the aggregation of DNA-AgNCs followed by the fluorescence quenching. The quenching mechanism is well-studied and found to be a static quenching process. This method can detect D-Pen in the range of 0.025-0.7 μM with the detection limit as low as 8 nM, which is 1-3 orders of magnitude more sensitive th

A Highly Selective Turn-on Fluorescent and Naked-eye Colourimetric Dual-channel Probe for Cyanide Anions Detection in Water Samples.

A highly selective turn-on fluorescent and naked-eye colourimetric dual-channel probe for cyanide anions (CN-) has been designed and characterized. In the mixed solution (DMSO / H2O, 9:1, v / v), only CN- could cause an increase in the UV absorption intensity and the corresponding fluorescence intensity increased, and other anions had no significant effect on the probe. After treatment with cyanide in the probe solution, the solution showed a noticeable colour change, from light yellow to purple. Moreover, a fluorescence spectrophotometer can be used to observe that the fluorescence intensity

Two cyanoethylene-based fluorescence probes for highly efficient cyanide detection and practical applications in drinking water and living cells.

Cyanide detection methods are urgently needed due to the highly lethal to human beings. Herein, we report two fluorescence probes (Probe 1 and Probe 2) based on cyanoethylene group for cyanide anion (CN-) detection. The selective recognition for CN- was confirmed by the completely opposite green fluorescence of Probe 1 and red fluorescence of Probe 2 observed by fluorescence spectra and naked eyes. The probes take advantages of the large Stokes shift (~160 nm), rapid response (30 s), anti-interference performance and low detection limit (Probe 1: 12.4 nM, Probe 2: 101 nM). The sensing mechanis

Anomalous fluorescence of white hair compared to other unpigmented keratin fibres.

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate that the tryptophan (Trp) fluorescence of natural white hair is much weaker than other unpigmented keratin fibres such as wool, cashmere, rabbit hair and mink fur, and to explore possible reasons for this behaviour. The origin of the blue visible fluorescence (~450 nm) excited by UVA radiation in the range 360-380 nm, often associated with Trp degradation products, is also discussed and compared to other fibrous and globular proteins. METHODS: As the fluorescence spectrum of keratin fibres usually contains at least two major features, a visual comparison is more effe
