Rapid and nondestructive determination of sesamin and sesamolin in Chinese sesames by near-infrared spectroscopy coupling with chemometric method.

Sesame was one of the most important crops in Africa and east Asia. The sesamin and sesamolin in sesames have shown various pharmacological, biological and physiologic activities. In this study, a rapid and nondestructive method for determination of sesamin and sesamolin in Chinese sesames by near-infrared spectroscopy coupled with chemometric method was proposed. The near infrared spectra of sesame samples from three different Chinese areas were collected and the partial least squares (PLS) was used to construct the quantitative models. The spectral preprocessing and variable selection method

Role of the right inferior frontal gyrus in turn-based cooperation and competition: A near-infrared spectroscopy study.

Interpersonal interaction can be classified into two types: concurrent and turn-based interaction, requiring synchronized body-movement and complementary behaviors across persons, respectively. To examine the neural mechanism of turn-based interaction, we simultaneously measured paired participants activations in their bilateral inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) and the bilateral inferior parietal lobule (IPL) in a turn-taking game using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Pairs of participants were assigned to either one of two roles (game builder and the partner) in the game. The builder's task wa

Indirect Neuromonitoring of the Spinal Cord by Near-Infrared Spectroscopy of the Paraspinous Thoracic and Lumbar Muscles in Aortic Surgery.

Paraplegia remains the most devastating complication of open and endovascular thoracic/thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAA/A) repair. However, the assessment of currently available neuromonitoring modalities remains challenging and difficult to interpret. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been introduced as a strategy for noninvasive, real-time monitoring of the paraspinous collateral network (CN) to detect potential spinal cord ischemia at our institution. Prior to TAA/A repair, a cerebrospinal fluid catheter is placed and four NIRS optodes are bilaterally positioned on the patient's ba

A validation study of the use of near-infrared spectroscopy imaging in primary and secondary motor areas of the human brain.

The electroencephalographically measured Bereitschafts (readiness)-potential in the supplementary motor area (SMA) serves as a signature of the preparation of motor activity. Using a multichannel, noninvasive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) imager, we studied the vascular correlate of the readiness potential. Sixteen healthy subjects performed a self-paced or externally triggered motor task in a single or repetitive pattern, while NIRS simultaneously recorded the task-related responses of deoxygenated hemoglobin (HbR) in the primary motor area (M1) and the SMA. Right-hand movements in the re

Preliminary evaluation of near infrared spectroscopy as a method to detect plasma leakage in children with dengue hemorrhagic fever.

BACKGROUND: Dengue viral infections are prevalent in the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, resulting in substantial morbidity and mortality. Clinical manifestations range from a self-limited fever to a potential life-threatening plasma leakage syndrome (dengue hemorrhagic fever). The objective of this study was to assess the utility of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements of muscle oxygen saturation (SmO2) as a possible continuous measure to detect plasma leakage in children with dengue. METHODS: Children ages 6 months to 15 years of age admitted with suspected dengue

The influence of frontal sinus in brain activation measurements by near-infrared spectroscopy analyzed by realistic head models.

Adequate modeling of light propagation in the head is important to predict the sensitivity of NIRS signal and the spatial sensitivity profile of source-detector pairs. The 3D realistic head models of which the geometry is based upon the anatomical images acquired by magnetic resonance imaging and x-ray computed tomography are constructed to investigate the influence of the frontal sinus on the NIRS signal and spatial sensitivity. Light propagation in the head is strongly affected by the presence of the frontal sinus. The light tends to propagate around the frontal sinus. The influence of the f

Anharmonic coupling of the CH-stretch and CH-bend vibrations of chloroform as studied by near-infrared electroabsorption spectroscopy.

Combination bands that involve CH- or OH-stretch vibrations appear in the near-infrared (NIR) region (4000-10 000 cm(-1)). Because they arise from anharmonic coupling between the component fundamentals, detailed analysis of the frequency and intensity of NIR combination bands allows one to elucidate the mechanisms behind the vibrational coupling in the condensed phase in terms of mechanical and electrical anharmonicities. Nevertheless, little has been studied, in particular experimentally, on the origin of the combination band intensity. Here, we show that NIR electroabsorption (EA) spectrosco

Use of near infrared spectroscopy as an alternative to videourodynamics to detect detrusor overactivity in women with the overactive bladder syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate near infrared spectroscopy as a noninvasive alternative to cystometry for detecting detrusor overactivity in women with overactive bladder (OAB). Although cystometry is considered the "gold standard" investigation for the lower urinary tract, it is invasive. Recently, a noninvasive form of assessment of the lower urinary tract has been introduced using near infrared spectroscopy. METHODS: This was a prospective pilot study. Women with symptoms of OAB, referred to a tertiary referral one-stop urodynamics clinic were studied. A urodynamic diagnosis was made according to t

Effect of experimental design on the prediction performance of calibration models based on near-infrared spectroscopy for pharmaceutical applications.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a valuable tool in the pharmaceutical industry, presenting opportunities for online analyses to achieve real-time assessment of intermediates and finished dosage forms. The purpose of this work was to investigate the effect of experimental designs on prediction performance of quantitative models based on NIRS using a five-component formulation as a model system. The following experimental designs were evaluated: five-level, full factorial (5-L FF); three-level, full factorial (3-L FF); central composite; I-optimal; and D-optimal. The factors for all designs

Evaluation of ischemia-reperfusion liver injury by near-infrared spectroscopy in an experimental swine model: the effect of desferoxamine.

INTRODUCTION: Ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury has long been regarded a primary factor for the physiological dysfunction that can occur following major liver resection performed under vascular control. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of treatment with desferoxamine (DFO), a potent antioxidative agent, monitoring the I-R injury on a porcine model of major hepatectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve female pigs were allocated to control (n = 6) and DFO groups (n = 6) and underwent 30 min of liver ischemia, during which a ≥30% hepatectomy was performed, followed by six hours of pos

Cerebral perfusion and oxygenation are impaired by folate deficiency in rat: absolute measurements with noninvasive near-infrared spectroscopy.

Brain microvascular pathology is a common finding in Alzheimer's disease and other dementias. However, the extent to which microvascular abnormalities cause or contribute to cognitive impairment is unclear. Noninvasive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) can address this question, but its use for clarifying the role of microvascular dysfunction in dementia has been limited due to theoretical and practical considerations. We developed a new noninvasive NIRS method to obtain quantitative, dynamic measurements of absolute brain hemoglobin concentration and oxygen saturation and used it to show sign

Decreased cerebral haemodynamic response to cognitive and physiological tasks in mood disorders as shown by near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Hypofrontality has been demonstrated in mood disorders by functional brain imaging methods such as positron emission tomography. However, the neurobiological basis of hypofrontality has not been well clarified. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive technique for continuous monitoring of alterations in oxygenated (oxyHb) and deoxygenated (deoxyHb) haemoglobin using near-infrared light, which penetrates biological tissues. METHODS: We used NIRS during cognitive and physiological tasks to investigate alterations of haemoglobin oxygenation in the frontal region of euthym

Development of a Novel Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurement Technique Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy and Deep Neural Networks.

Non-invasive monitoring of blood pressure is essential for health management in daily life, particularly for elderly individuals and patients with autonomic dysfunction. However, conventional cuff-based sphygmomanometers are uncomfortable and provide discontinuous monitoring. In this study, we propose a novel non-invasive technique for blood pressure change assessment based on prefrontal near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and deep neural networks. Unlike existing approaches that rely primarily on electrocardiography or photoplethysmography signals, the proposed method independently utilizes pre

Method Adaptation Patterns and a Selection Framework for Near-Infrared Spectroscopy-Based Moisture Prediction of Major Grain Crops.

Moisture content is an important indicator of grain storage safety, processing quality, and circulation efficiency. However, the performance of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) models is affected by differences in grain crops, sample morphologies, preprocessing strategies, feature selection methods, and regression models, and the adaptation relationships among these factors remain insufficiently understood. In this study, soybean, maize, and wheat samples with whole-grain and powder morphologies were investigated to reveal the method adaptation patterns of NIRS-based moisture prediction under

Application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy in evaluating antidepressant treatment efficacy: a review of recent evidence (2021-2026).

Major depressive disorder (MDD) remains challenging to treat due to the lack of objective biomarkers for monitoring treatment response and predicting outcomes. Traditional treatment response evaluation rely heavily on subjective assessments, creating a pressing need for objective biomarkers to monitor therapeutic efficacy. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS), a non-invasive, portable, and high-temporal-resolution brain imaging technique, can indirectly reflect brain function by monitoring metrics such as oxy-hemoglobin. This review systematically synthesizes research from 2021-2026 t
