A male patient in his late teens initially presented with severe left upper abdominal pain, following a week of influenza-like symptoms. Initially, he presented to his GP, who diagnosed him with bacterial tonsillitis and treated him with clarithromycin. His clinical condition deteriorated further with severe vomiting and abdominal pain. Clinical assessment in accident and emergency revealed tachycardia, splenomegaly, lymphadenopathy and metabolic acidosis. Investigations confirmed Epstein-Barr virus infection, splenic rupture and haemoperitoneum, requiring an emergency splenectomy. He received…

Spontaneous splenic rupture (SSR) is an exceptionally rare and life-threatening condition, with its pathophysiology remaining poorly understood. This report describes the first documented case of SSR in a patient with Q fever infection and underlying liver cirrhosis with portal hypertension. The patient was a man in his late 30 s who presented with severe abdominal pain, vomiting and hypovolemic shock who required emergency splenectomy due to unstable splenic hemorrhage. Post-operatively, a diagnosis of Q fever was confirmed through serological testing. To date, there has only been six cases d…

Atraumatic splenic rupture is a rare but life-threatening condition. The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still a mysterious infection, often associated with spontaneous bleeding and coagulation disorders. Among them, a rare presentation is the atraumatic splenic rupture during SARS-CoV-2 infection. We reported the case of a COVID-19 patient that underwent splenectomy for a spontaneous splenic rupture without splenomegaly or any hematological disorders. Moreover, we reviewed the literature about this matter focusing on the hypothetical etiopathogenesis of this condition in COVID-19 patie…

Malaria is frequently associated with splenomegaly. However, spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare and life-threatening complication. It is mostly seen in acute infection in non-immune adults and Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium falciparum have been associated with the majority of cases. We describe a case of splenic rupture in an adult with complicated malaria by Plasmodium falciparum in which a conservative approach was used.

Atraumatic splenic rupture is an uncommon complication of acute pancreatitis. This article presents a case of a 35-year-old patient presenting with acute pancreatitis who subsequently developed a splenic vein thrombosis and splenic rupture requiring a laparotomy and splenectomy. This rare but life-threatening complication requires prompt recognition and management in patients with pancreatitis who develop sudden hemodynamic instability.

BACKGROUND: Splenic rupture is a well-described complication of babesiosis but is rarely associated with anaplasmosis.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 37-year-old man with no significant past medical history who presented with malaise, myalgias, arthralgias and severe left upper quadrant pain. He was found to have splenic rupture secondary to infection by Anaplasma phagocytophilum. He reported a single tick bite the week prior to onset of his symptoms. On presentation, he was found to have left upper quadrant abdominal tenderness, pancytopenia, and splenomegaly with evidence of splen…

PURPOSE: To report a case of delayed splenic rupture after percutaneous transsplenic portal vein stent deployment.
CASE REPORT: A 72-year-old male patient presented at a medical center with abdominal pain and reduced liver function according to laboratory tests. Due to a history of right hemihepatectomy and left portal vein occlusion, the percutaneous transhepatic approach was considered inappropriate. Instead, percutaneous transsplenic access was selected as a suitable procedure for portal vein catheterization. Eight days following the procedure, the patient developed abdominal pain, and a c…

Isolated splenic hydatid cyst is a very rare manifestation of hydatid cyst. Rarely, patients present late after the cyst is ruptured. They might not present with usual presentations such as the acute abdomen, anaphylaxis, or urticarial rashes but only with a distended abdomen. Splenectomy is the emergency operative management.

Babesiosis is a relatively common tick-borne parasitic infection of erythrocytes primarily affecting the northeastern United States. Babesiosis' prevalence and presentation have earned it the monikers "malaria of the northeast" and "Nantucket fever". Clinical presentation ranges from asymptomatic infection to severe infection including acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) or death. Since 2008, there have been a number of reports of splenic rupture in patients with the disease. We seek to provide a further understanding of this process, wi…

BACKGROUND: Acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APL) is a subtype of acute myeloid leukaemia with high curability rates. However, it is often accompanied by severe coagulopathy and bleeding risk and thus represents a potentially fatal haematological emergency requiring immediate treatment. Spontaneous splenic rupture is a rare event in all haematological malignancies. Only two clinical cases have been described so far in a setting of APL.
CASE REPORT: We report a patient with APL without preceding splenomegaly who underwent urgent splenectomy for spontaneously occurring splenic rupture during indu…

Non-traumatic splenic rupture has been described in the medical literature as a clinical entity with grave consequences, if diagnosis and subsequent treatment are delayed. Various pathological reasons implicated in non-traumatic spontaneous splenic rupture have been described in literature ranging from infection, malignancy, metabolic disorders as well as haematological malignancies. This case reports a 30-year-old man who presented in the emergency department with complaints of fever and a sudden-onset abdominal pain with no history of trauma. At hospital admission, abdominal tenderness with …

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the indications for non-surgical management of traumatic splenic rupture.
METHODS: From Jan. 2002 to Jan. 2008, 36 patients with traumatic splenic rupture underwent non-surgical management in the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University.
RESULTS: Of the 36 cases, 32 were successfully managed without surgical interventions, and 4 converted to open surgery. No death occurred in these patients, nor was delayed splenic rupture identified 1 to 5 years after the treatment.
CONCLUSION: Hemodynamically index is an important reference to select the patients, and the de…

We report the incidental finding of a nodular mass in the pancreatic tail on a contrast-enhanced computed tomography scan preinterventional to emergency laparotomy for splenic rupture. Because of the past surgical history and radiologic appearance, differential diagnosis included atypical lymphoma in the spleen and regional lymph node, pancreatic adenocarcinoma with splenic metastasis, and intrapancreatic metastase of malignant melanoma; the patient underwent both splenectomy and pancreatic tail resection. A diagnosis of littoral cell angioma in main and accessory intrapancreatic spleen was ma…

Spontaneous rupture of splenic artery aneurysm during pregnancy is a rare, life-threatening event with a catastrophic prognosis. Splenic artery aneurysm, known to be more frequent in women, especially among multiparous ones, is generally asymptomatic until rupture. Because of increased blood flow and hormonal modifications, this rupture occurs frequently during pregnancy, most often at the end of the third trimester. We present the case of a second parous woman in early pregnancy with a rupture of splenic artery aneurysm initially diagnosed as a complicated ectopic pregnancy, which profoundly

Splenic arteriovenous fistulas (SAVFs) are rare vascular anomalies, which have a described association with splenic artery aneurysms. Treatment options include surgical fistula excision, splenectomy, or percutaneous embolization. Here we present a unique case of endovascular repair of a splenic arteriovenous fistula (SAVFs) associated with a splenic aneurysm. A patient with past medical history of early-stage invasive lobular carcinoma was referred to our interventional radiology practice to discuss an incidentally discovered splenic "vascular malformation" discovered during magnetic resonance

Giant infected splenic pseudocysts are rare and may be difficult to diagnose due to overlapping clinical and imaging features with other cystic splenic lesions, including hydatid cysts and abscesses. At our institution, a 59-year-old male with no reported history of splenic trauma presented with weight loss, early satiety, and left upper quadrant pain. Computed tomography demonstrated a large calcified splenic cyst measuring up to 14.6 cm with internal septations and an air-fluid level, concerning for infection and rupture. The cyst fluid measured a median of 12 Hounsfield units, without perce
