Injuries of the medial ankle ligament complex (MALC; deltoid and spring ligament) are more common following ankle sprains than expected, especially in eversion-external rotation mechanisms. Often these injuries are associated with concomitant osteochondral lesions, syndesmotic lesions, or fractures of the ankle joint. The clinical assessment of the medial ankle instability together with a conventional radiological and MR imaging is the basis for the definition of the diagnosis and therefore the optimal treatment. This review aims to provide an overview as well as a basis to successfully manage

BACKGROUND: Local pain around the ankle joint is a common symptom in patients with chronic ankle instability (CAI). However, whether the local pain would impose any influence on the balance control performance of CAI patients is still unknown.
METHODS: A total of twenty-six subjects were recruited and divided into the following two groups: pain-free CAI (group A) and pain-present CAI (group B). Subjects in both groups received two independent tests: the star excursion balance test and the single-leg stance test, in order to reflect their balance control ability more accurately.
RESULTS: Comp

BACKGROUND: Running-related injuries are prevalent musculoskeletal complaints in the United States military. Although, run retraining is an extensively researched method for reducing pain and improving function in runners, its clinical utility remains low.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The patient had a seven-year history of recurrent right calf strains. Prior conventional physical therapy failed to resolve symptoms. A biomechanical running analysis revealed a right forefoot strike during running. The patient underwent run retraining that included real-time visual feedback and a faded feedback strategy f

BACKGROUND: Ankle sprain is the most common sports-related injury, and approximately 80% of patients studied suffered recurrent sprains. These repeated ankle injuries could cause chronic ankle instability, a decrease in sports performance, and a decrease in postural control ability. At the present time, smartphones have become very popular and powerful devices, and smartphone applications (apps) that have been shown to have good validity have been designed to measure human body motion. However, the app focusing on ankle function assessment and rehabilitation is still not widely used and has ve

BACKGROUND: Many studies have examined the temporal response of the peroneal muscles to sudden inversion perturbation in patients with a previous ankle sprain. The purpose of this systematic review with meta-analysis was to synthesize the evidence and determine whether peroneal reaction time (PRT) impairments are present after ankle sprain.
METHODS: An electronic search was conducted using PubMed Central and EBSCOhost (1965-January 2013). Articles were included if they 1) examined the PRT to sudden inversion perturbation in patients with a history of ankle sprain using a mechanical tilt platf

OBJECTIVE: Musculoskeletal injuries related to training and operational missions frequently affect military personnel. A common treatment for these injuries is the PRICE (protection, rest, ice, compression, and elevation) method, which is time consuming and impractical in the field. Therefore, the primary objective of this study was to determine the effectiveness of the cryotherapy wrap compared to a traditional treatment in the management of acute ankle sprains.
METHODS: A randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted in a university research laboratory with 13 subjects (9 males and 4 f

Ankle injuries are common occurrences in athletics involving and requiring extreme ranges of motion. Ankle sprains specifically occur with a 1 in 10,000 person rate in active individuals each day. If trauma is repetitive, the ankle structures have potential to experience secondary injury and dysfunction. Included in this category of dysfunction are both anterior and posterior ankle impingement syndromes where disruption of the bony structures, joint capsule, ligaments, and tendons typically occurs. Ankle impingement is described as ankle pain that occurs during athletic activity, with recurren
