In brief: This study documents the patterns of use of anabolic steroids in 32 body builders and power lifters. These subjects and seven control athletes who had never used steroids were interviewed and underwent a medical examination including 28 diagnostic blood tests and a urinalysis. Gynecomastia was detected in 4 of the 20 current users and 1 of the other 19 subjects. Labor induction in humans by the injection of 18 mg of betamethasone (Celestone) into the amniotic sac was investigated in a group of 19 pregnant women. The clinical and pathological findings of peliosis hepatis are reported, complicating a long-term treatment with an anabolic steroid in a 19 year old male patient suffering from chronic aplastic anemia. Following a 15 months course of oxymetholone (Anapolon) a cholestatic jaundice developed without regression despite discontinuing the drug. 4 months later the patient expired as a consequence of his hematologic disease.
