AIMS: To describe the clinical profiles and results of surgical and non-surgical interventions in a large cohort of patients with strabismus associated with chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia (CPEO).
METHODS: A retrospective case note review was conducted of all patients with a clinical diagnosis of CPEO referred to our institution's strabismus department in the United Kingdom between 1990 and 2008.

We studied the effects of paralytic strabismus on visual behaviour and binocularity of cortical visual mechanisms by immobilization of one eye in adult cats. Visual discrimination abilities of the immobilized eye were significantly diminished despite extensive training with one or both eyes. PURPOSE: To investigate heterotropia, heterophoria, head posture, nystagmus, stereo acuity, ocular motility and near point of convergence (NPC) in children with hydrocephalus treated surgically before 1 year of age. In addition, the effects of being born with hydrocephalus, the effect of the etiology of hydrocephalus, number of shunt revisions and the size of the ventricles on these variables were studied.

BACKGROUND: Botulinum toxin A has been used in the treatment of dysthyroid strabismus primarily as a temporary measure during the active phase of the disease. We report on our experience with 65 patients.
METHOD: We review the records of 65 patients with dysthyroid strabismus who were treated with botulinum toxin A at Moorfields Eye Hospital between 1984 and 1996.
CONCLUSIONS: Patients with a short duration of relatively mild dysthyroid strabismus have a chance of long-term benefit with botulinum toxin A. There is little use for botulinum toxin A in cases of severe dysthyroid disease.

Clinical features of vertical strabismus with superior oblique muscle insufficiency were studied in 123 patients. A complex of clinical methods was used and clinical evaluation of these methods made. Various forms of strabismus with superior oblique muscle insufficiency were detected. Four degrees of superior oblique muscle weakness were distinguished corresponding to four degrees of inferior oblique muscle hyperfunction.

Thirty patients with blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, strabismus and entropion were treated with botulinum A toxin giving satisfactory results. Rapid spasm relief, correction of strabismus and entropion were obtained. Only mild, transient and local side-effects occurred. The patients were followed up for 4-12 weeks with no recurrence. The clinical results show that local injection of a minute dose of botulinum A toxin in treating blepharospasm, hemifacial spasm, strabismus and entropion is a safe, effective and simple method of nonsurgical therapy.

Maternal drug abuse during pregnancy exposes the fetus to the possibility of toxic or addicting effects. At a methadone hydrochloride maintenance program providing medical care to drug-dependent women and their infants, ophthalmologic examinations of all infants born during a 36-month period were performed. Twenty-nine infants prenatally exposed to psychoactive drugs were seen at birth and on follow-up. The incidence, severity, and duration of ptosis after botulinum neurotoxin type A (BAT) injections into extraocular or orbicularis muscles were reviewed retrospectively.
