Experimental challenge procedures were used to study infectivity and virulence of Corynebacterium bovis. Challenge procedures using Staphylococcus aureus (Newbould 305) and Streptococcus agalactiae (McDonald 44) were used to study effects of Corynebacterium bovis infections on superinfection with major pathogens. Rate of infection under experimental challenge conditions was significantly greater with Corynebacterium bovis than previously observed for Staphylococcus aureus or Streptococcus agalactiae. Principal location of Corynebacterium bovis colonization appeared to the teat canal region, al…

The diagnostic value of negative blood cultures from neonates whose mothers receive intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis for prevention of perinatal group B streptococcal disease is uncertain. We investigated whether blood culture medium containing resin designed to adsorb antibiotic improved group B streptococcal detection following simulated intrapartum antimicrobial prophylaxis. Group B streptococcus (Streptococcus agalactiae) was preincubated with varying antibiotic concentrations before inoculation into BACTEC Peds Plus resin-containing medium, BACTEC Standard, or Trek ESP 80A. UNLABELLED: Streptococcus pneumoniae is a rarely cause of neonatal sepsis. Its prevalence is low but with a mortality of 50%. Measures to prevent Streptococcus agalactiae transmission could help to increase Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) in newborns. Transmission could be from mother intrapartum; or in those cases of late onset sepsis, the community carriers. Systematic vaccination with PCV-7 and PCV-13 has reduced IPD rates. We present a case of a newborn with no perinatal risk factors for infection. In the first 24 hours after surgery of an ovarian cyst, the patient started with bad gen…

Streptococcus pneumoniae is a rare cause of neonatal sepsis, and it is associated with significant morbidity and a very high fatality rate. The infection is usually acquired intrapartum, from the colonization of the maternal genital tract. Most affected neonates have an early-onset presentation of symptoms, usually within the first 48 hours after birth, which is similar to other causes of neonatal sepsis such as Streptococcus Agalactiae or Escherichia Coli. However, the virulence seems to be higher for Streptococcus pneumoniae, which has in addition a higher infant invasion/ maternal colonizat…

Streptococcus pneumoniae and Streptococcus agalactiae cause distinct infectious diseases in small children. Similarly, these bacteria elicit very different host-cell responses in vitro. Inactivated S. agalactiae by far exceeds S. pneumoniae in the activation of inflammatory cytokines and upstream signaling intermediates such as the MAP kinase JNK. The inflammatory response to both Streptococcus spp. is mediated by MyD88, an essential adapter protein of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), although the specific TLRs that are involved have not been fully resolved. Furthermore, during logarithmic growth, …

Streptococcus agalactiae is an important microorganism involved in a number of conditions in pregnant women, newborns, elderly people (over 65 years of age) and individuals with chronic disabling illnesses. This pathogen is infrequently found among patients outside this age range or clinical profile(1-5) and is rarely reported in the etiology of sexually transmitted diseases. Here we describe a case of an otherwise healthy 19 year-old male, who presented with ulcerative genital and oral lesions in association with urethral and ocular discharge, suggestive of Streptococcus agalactiae infection …

Septicemia is the main cause of neonatal mortality. The early-onset neonatal sepsis is usually related to maternal factor risks including recto-vaginal colonization. In the late-onset neonatal septicemia it is more difficult to establish the etiology because the majority of the cases are nosocomial or community related. The Streptococcus agalactiae (beta-hemolytic Streptococcus) is the most frequent germ associated with neonatal sepsis in developed countries. The late-onset form usually occurs with septic symptoms and meningitis and, in a few cases, with osteoarticular, skin and soft tissue in…

Of 243 children born after premature rupture of the membranes (PROM) 61 (26%) had the same bacteria in placental arterial blood, in ear swabs (taken deep from the external auditory canal) and in meconium. The predominant organisms were E. coli, Bacteroides fragilis, Streptococcus faecalis (enterococci) and Streptococcus agalactiae (group B streptococci). The infection rate was only 10% if the membranes had ruptured within 24 h of the onset of labour and 30% if the interval was longer than 24 h. Of 131 children born without premature rupture of the membranes but with risk factors for sepsis 9 (…

Streptococcosis cause severe losses for global tilapia farming, especially in developing countries. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize streptococci recovered from Nile tilapia farmed in the Philippines. Moribund and apparently healthy fish were sampled from grow-out cages, ponds and hatcheries. Clinical signs observed included exophthalmia, eye opacity, ascites, lethargy, erratic swimming and haemorrhages. Results showed that both Streptococcus iniae and Streptococcus agalactiae were associated with disease in these sites. Consistent with global reports, including those fro…

A 27-year-old man was diagnosed with infective endocarditis due to Streptococcus agalactiae. Large vegetations were seen on the anterior mitral valve leaflet and also on the right ventricular side of a membranous ventricular septal defect. Streptococcus agalactiae is a rare cause of endocarditis, and it is very rare to find large vegetations around ventricular septal defect. The authors present this interesting case of unusual endocarditis with vegetations in both the right and left heart. This case is the first reported case of infective endocarditis involving the left and the right sides of …
