Anaerobic bacteria of the genus Bacteroides are a large group of commensal microorganisms that colonize the human and animal digestive tract. The genus Bacteroides and the closely related genus Parabacteroides include the Bacteroides fragilis group (BFG) of potentially pathogenic bacteria which are frequently isolated from patients with anaerobic infections. The aim of this study was to assess the antimicrobial resistance of environmental strains of the Bacteroides fragilis group. Strains were isolated from human feces, hospital wastewater, influent (UWW) and effluent (TWW) wastewater from a w

Ramie (Boehmeria nivea, BN) is used as livestock forage through suitable silage fermentation owing to its nutritional value. To date, relatively few studies have investigated the effects of dietary fermented BN (FBN) on gut health in finishing pigs. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation with 20% FBN on intestinal morphology, gene expression, and the functional response of the gut microbiota in finishing pigs. We found that FBN did not significantly affect serum antioxidant enzyme activities, ileal morphology, or the expression of genes encoding

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are recognized as contaminants due to their potential risk for human and environment. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of pyroligneous acid (PA), a waste of biochar production, on fermentation characteristics, diversity, and dynamics of ARGs during ensiling of alfalfa using metagenomic analysis. The results indicated that PA decreased (P < 0.05) dry matter loss, pH value, gas production, coliform bacteria count, protease activity, and nonprotein-N, ammonia-N, and butyric acid contents and increased (P < 0.05) lactic acid content duri

Staphylococcus aureus is an organism of major medical importance, leading to skin and soft tissue infections, bacteremia, and endocarditis. S.aureus isolates are becoming increasingly resistant to numerous antimicrobial agents including antiseptics and disinfectants. Quaternary ammonium compounds are disinfectants that play an important role in the control of nosocomial infections. Presence of genes conferring resistance to quaternary ammonium compounds is widely distributed among clinical staphylococci isolated from certain areas of the world. In this present study, we aimed to study the prev

BACKGROUND: Propionibacterium acnes and P. granulosum are widely regarded as the aetiological agents of inflammatory acne. Their proliferation and metabolism are controlled using lengthy courses of oral and/or topical antibiotics. Despite numerous reports of skin colonization by antibiotic-resistant propionibacteria among acne patients, accurate prevalence data are available only for the U.K.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of skin colonization by antibiotic-resistant propionibacteria among acne patients and their contacts from six European centres.
METHODS: Skin swabs were collected

The correct empiric choice of antimicrobial therapy in the treatment of pneumonia in hospitalized patients has established itself as a major therapeutic challenge to clinicians. Selection of an inappropriate antimicrobial agent could lead to increased rates of mortality and morbidity. Characteristics of pathogens responsible for this infection such as species prevalence, overall antimicrobial resistance rates, and mechanisms of detected resistance could serve as an invaluable resource to clinicians in making such therapeutic selections. This report addresses the aforementioned problems/needs b

Elderly patients are at increased risk of developing lower respiratory tract infections compared with younger patients. In this population, pneumonia is a serious illness with high rates of hospitalisation and mortality, especially in patients requiring admission to intensive care units (ICUs). A wide range of pathogens may be involved depending on different settings of acquisition and patient's health status. Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common bacterial isolate in community-acquired pneumonia, followed by Haemophilus influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis and atypical pathogens such as Ch

INTRODUCTION: Over the past few years, the genus Enterococcus has been implicated as both probiotic and pathogenic bacteria, making it challenging to introduce enterococcal probiotic candidates. Based on rigid case-by-case analysis, some enterococcal strains have been developed as probiotics, exhibiting various beneficial activities that promote the health of the host. In this study, the probiotic potential of Enterococcus faecalis CAUM157 (KACC81148BP), isolated from raw cow's milk, was examined, leveraging its bacteriocin production for potential control of pathogenic and spoilage-associated

The dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is an escalating problem and a threat to public health. Comparative metagenomics was used to investigate the occurrence of antibiotic resistant genes (ARGs) in wastewater and urban surface water environments in Singapore. Hospital and municipal wastewater (n = 6) were found to have higher diversity and average abundance of ARGs (303 ARG subtypes, 197,816 x/Gb) compared to treated wastewater effluent (n = 2, 58 ARG subtypes, 2,692 x/Gb) and surface water (n = 5, 35 subtypes, 7,985 x/Gb). A cluster analysis showed that the taxonomic composition

INTRODUCTION: Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) is a pathobiont of the intestinal microbiota that can cause severe systemic and enteric diseases. C. perfringens colonizes a variety of hosts and environmental niches, which is the theorized reason for its large genome, low guanine-cytosine content, and small stable core genome. Over 20 putative virulence factors have been described, but only six are included in the used typing scheme. Epidemiological analysis is limited, and to the authors' knowledge, this is the first study for Austria. Furthermore, C. perfringens frequently harbors diff

Quinupristin/dalfopristin is a streptogramin antibacterial with a wide spectrum of Gram-positive antibacterial activity. The drug has minimal oral absorption and is administered intravenously as a fixed 30 : 70 ratio of quinupristin to dalfopristin. A linear relationship has been observed between the dose administered and maximum plasma concentrations. Single-dose administration of 7.5 mg/kg produced a maximal plasma concentration of 2.3-2.7 mg/L for quinupristin and 6.1-8.2 mg/L for dalfopristin. The area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) obtained with the same dose was 2.7-3.3 and 6.5…

Piglets are often weaned between 19 and 22 days of age in North America, although in some swine operations this may occur at 14 days or less. Piglets are abruptly separated from their sow at weaning and are quickly transitioned from sow's milk to a plant-based diet. The effect of weaning age on the long-term development of the pig gut microbiome is largely unknown. Here, pigs were weaned at either 14, 21, or 28 days of age, and fecal samples were collected 20 times from day 4 (neonatal) through marketing at day 140. The fecal microbiome was characterized using 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagen

Rivers are important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). However, most current studies have focused on the temporal and spatial distribution, and data on the differences in the species and abundance of ARGs between urban and rural rivers is still lacking for certain areas. In view of this, two rural rivers and three urban rivers were selected in Shijiazhuang City. In both December 2020 and April 2021, sediments were collected at 15 sampling sites. Metagenomic sequencing technology was used to compare the differences in temporal-spatial variation for ARGs in sediments. The results

UNLABELLED: The erythromycin resistance RNA methyltransferase (erm) confers cross-resistance to all therapeutically important macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramins (MLS phenotype). The expression of erm is often induced by the macrolide-mediated ribosome stalling in the upstream co-transcribed leader sequence, thereby triggering a conformational switch of the intergenic RNA hairpins to allow the translational initiation of erm. We investigated the evolutionary emergence of the upstream erm regulatory elements and the impact of allelic variation on erm expression and the MLS phenotype. T

Streptococcus parasuis is currently not only an underestimated zoonotic pathogen but also a bacterial source of infection in food animals, posing a potential threat to global public health. Despite increased reports in recent years, systematic studies in Northwest China remain scarce. However, the lack of complete genomic sequence information has limited in-depth bioinformatics analysis of multidrug-resistant S. parasuis isolated from pigs. This study reports the whole-genome sequencing results of S. parasuis strain A1 isolated from pigs. The A1 genome consists of a single circular chromosome
