Cortisol and post-traumatic stress disorder in adults: systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has inconsistently been associated with lower levels of cortisol. AIMS: To compare basal cortisol levels in adults with current PTSD and in people without psychiatric disorder. METHOD: Systematic review and meta-analysis. Standardised mean differences (SMD) in basal cortisol levels were calculated and random-effects models using inverse variance weighting were applied. RESULTS: Across 37 studies, 828 people with PTSD and 800 controls did not differ in cortisol levels (pooled SMD=-0.12, 95% CI=-0.32 to 0.080). Subgroup analyses revealed that

Sensitivity to carbon dioxide in drug-naïve subjects with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is currently classified as an anxiety disorder in DSM-IV, and as a neurosis or stress-related disorder in ICD-10. It shares many features with depression. Sensitivity to carbon dioxide (CO2), a classic provocation agent in the proto-typical anxiety disorder, panic disorder, has not been tested in PTSD. Twenty rigorously ascertained drug-naïve subjects with PTSD inhaled a single vital capacity inhalation of 35% CO2; before and after the inhalation they completed measures of PTSD and panic anxiety, and were rated for the presence of a panic attack. These res

Post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms among military health professionals in Turkey.

This descriptive study investigated traumatic experiences and post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms among military professionals in Turkey. The sample included 225 military health professionals who were in charge in districts in which traumatic events occurred frequently in the past decade. The Impact of Event Scale, Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Symptom Checklist were used to obtain data in the study. More than one-half of the health professionals had experienced at least one traumatic event. Those who had a history of traumatic experience and loss of relatives or friends reported more sympto

Co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder in a substance misusing clinical population.

BACKGROUND: USA studies have reported high rates of co-morbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and substance (drugs and alcohol) dependence/misuse. Avoidance of trauma reminders and associated distress may be achieved by the use of drugs and alcohol, alternatively a substance abusing lifestyle might predispose such individuals to experience traumatic events. This may have implications for treatment and management of patients with co-morbid substance misuse and PTSD. There have been no British studies looking at the extent of traumatic life events and post-traumatic stress disorder amongst

Emotional outbursts and post-traumatic stress disorder during intracarotid amobarbital procedure.

Severe emotional outbursts (SEOs) during intracarotid amobarbital procedures (IAP) rarely jeopardize preoperative language and memory testing. Four of four patients (100%) with outbursts had experienced significant emotional trauma (three were raped and one witnessed a decapitation), compared with 26 of 546 patients (4.8%) without outbursts (chi2 = 69.8, p < 0. 0001). Evocative injections were ipsilateral to seizure focus. IAP may disrupt emotional balance in some traumatized patients. Counseling may prevent SEOs.

Postconcussive symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder after mild traumatic brain injury.

Postconcussive symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) may be exacerbated by anxiety associated with posttraumatic stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between postconcussive symptoms and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in an MTBI population. Survivors of motor vehicle accidents who either sustained an MTBI (N = 46) or no TBI (N = 59) were assessed 6 months posttrauma for PTSD and postconcussive symptoms. Postconcussive symptoms were more evident in MTBI patients with PTSD than those without PTSD, and in MTBI patients than non-TBI patients. Further,

A family study of chronic post-traumatic stress disorder following rape trauma.

There is evidence that familial factors serve as determinants of risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), especially familial anxiety. This study investigates the relationship between chronic PTSD and family psychiatric morbidity. The sample was drawn from 81 female rape survivors with or without lifetime PTSD, 31 major depressive disorder controls, 20 anxiety disorder controls and 39 healthy controls. First-degree family members were directly interviewed (n = 285) and diagnoses assigned of major depressive, anxiety and alcohol or substance use disorder. Information was also available b

Help-seeking in Vietnam veterans: post-traumatic stress disorder and other predictors.

This study investigated factors predicting help-seeking from the Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) by Vietnam veterans. Data used were from a national Australian survey of Vietnam veterans' health (n = 641) conducted between July 1990 and April 1993. The survey involved current clinical assessments and retrospective questionnaires, supplemented with health and service records retrieved from the DVA and Army personnel files. Measures included the 1989-90 Australian Bureau of Statistics Health Survey questionnaire, and mental health, sociodemographic and operational deployment history questi

Symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder in abused women in a primary care setting.

Abuse is a major source of trauma to women, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) results from exposure to extreme trauma. To describe the relationship between symptoms of PTSD and severity of abuse, an ethnically stratified cohort of 131 abused women in a primary care setting was interviewed. Symptoms of PTSD, both intrusion (i.e., trouble falling asleep, strong waves of feelings about the abuse) and avoidance (i.e., trying not to think or talk about the abuse, staying away from reminders of the abuse), were significantly (p < 0.01) correlated to severity of abuse, regardless of ethnicity

An unusual reaction to opioid blockade with naltrexone in a case of post-traumatic stress disorder.

An unusual behavioral and cardiovascular reaction was observed during opioid blockade with naltrexone in a 32-year-old male who met DSM III-R criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As part of an ongoing placebo-controlled investigation of the effects of naltrexone on laboratory and ambulatory blood pressure reactivity, this participant reported experiencing feelings of rage, explosive behavior, and other unpleasant symptoms. When compared to all other subjects (N = 24), this individual showed significantly greater effects of naltrexone on blood pressure reactivity during the labor

A case of delayed post-traumatic stress disorder with 'organic memories' accompanying therapy.

A case of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following a road traffic accident in which the onset of symptoms was delayed for 18 months until a widely reported major disaster occurred is described. A severe major depressive episode was precipitated, requiring treatment in its own right. During psychotherapy sessions, extreme emotions, heightened sensations, and 'organic memories' relating to the original accident were experienced.

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review of Diagnostic Distinction and Comorbidity.

INTRODUCTION: The recognition of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) as a distinct diagnosis in ICD-11 has intensified the need to clarify its boundaries with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD), given their symptom overlap and shared traumatic origins. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to examine whether CPTSD is distinct from BPD, assess their comorbidity and symptom overlap, identify key criteria for differential diagnosis, and explore therapeutic implications. METHOD: A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science following PRISMA 2020 guideline

Investigating the association between post-traumatic stress disorder and REM sleep behavior disorder: a systematic review.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is frequently accompanied by additional sleep disturbances, such as nightmares and insomnia. Recent findings suggest a potential association between PTSD and REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD). This systematic review evaluates the current evidence on the PTSD-RBD relationship, with attention to prevalence, diagnostic approaches, shared pathophysiological mechanisms, and clinical implications. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE, and PsycINFO was conducted up to July 2025. Eligible studies included observational, cohort, and experimental

Comprehensive bioinformatics analysis of co-expressed genes of post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most serious sequelae of trauma with serious impact worldwide. Studies have suggested an association between PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD), but the underlying common mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to further explore the molecular mechanism between PTSD and MDD via comprehensive bioinformatics analysis. METHODS: The microarray data of PTSD and MDD were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) analysis and weighted gene co-expression network analysis (

Prospective, comparative, pilot study of maintenance treatment in comorbid bipolar disorders with post-traumatic stress disorder.

There is limited real-world evidence that evaluates the impact of monotherapy vs. combination therapy as a maintenance treatment in comorbid post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in bipolar disorder (BD). Our aim was to compare lithium vs. lithium plus quetiapine in maintenance treatment in a sample of comorbid BD with PTSD. An exploratory, comparative pilot study over a 28-week period in 34 comorbid BD with PTSD patients was performed to compare monotherapy (n = 18) vs. combination therapy (n = 16) during maintenance treatment. The primary outcome was the time to event of recurrence of any mo
