Association of SGLT2 inhibitors use with a lower risk of biliary diseases in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) increases the risk of biliary diseases (BD). This study aimed to evaluate the association between sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) use andBD risk in T2DM patients, compared with sulfonylureas. METHODS: We conducted a multi-center retrospective cohort study using electronic health records from Nanjing Medical University (January 2017-September 2022). Adults aged 18-75 years with T2DM newly prescribed SGLT2i or sulfonylureas were included. Propensity score with inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW) was applied to balance

Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists and Risk of Tuberculosis in Type 2 Diabetes.

Tuberculosis remains a leading cause of illness and death worldwide, and individuals with type 2 diabetes have an increased risk of developing this infection. However, whether different glucose-lowering medications influence this risk is unclear. Here we show that use of glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists is associated with a lower risk of tuberculosis compared with several commonly prescribed alternatives. We conducted a multicenter cohort study using TriNetX electronic health records from 143 healthcare organizations across multiple countries between 2017-2025. Patients receiving gluc

Control of type 2 diabetes in patients with cancer and chronic pro-inflammatory cytokines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Patients with cancer and severe COVID-19 pneumonia treated with injectable azithromycin and anakinra frequently develop dysglycemia, necessitating initiation of sulfonylurea therapy (gliquidone or glimepiride). We retrospectively reviewed adults (≥30 years) with diabetes and cancer who were hospitalised for COVID-19 at the Central Military Hospital Bucharest and the Matei Bals National Institute between March 2020 and August 2022. All patients completed a 14-day course of azithromycin + anakinra and survived to discharge. Glycaemic control was achieved with fixed-dose gliquidone 30 mg or glime

Long-term effect of pioglitazone vs glimepiride on lipoprotein oxidation in patients with type 2 diabetes: a prospective randomized study.

AIMS: Type 2 diabetes (DM2) is associated to oxidative modifications of high-density lipoproteins (HDL), which can interfere with their function. Pioglitazone has proved effective in raising HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and lowering small dense low-density lipoprotein (LDL), but no clinical studies have examined its effect on lipoprotein oxidation in patients with DM2. METHODS: We assessed the effect of pioglitazone vs glimepiride after 1 year on HDL oxidation, expressed as relative abundance of peptides containing Met112O in ApoA-I (oxApoA-I) estimated by mass spectrometry (MALDI/TOF/TOF), in 95

Non-insulin drugs to treat hyperglycaemia in type 1 diabetes mellitus.

Insulin treatment of individuals with type 1 diabetes has shortcomings and many patients do not achieve glycaemic and metabolic targets. Consequently, the focus is on novel non-insulin therapeutic approaches that reduce hyperglycaemia and improve metabolic variables without increasing the risk of hypoglycaemia or other adverse events. Several therapies given in conjunction with insulin have been investigated in clinical trials, including pramlintide, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, sodium-glucose co-transporter inhibitors, metformin, sulfonylureas,

Drug-induced lichen planus.

Lichen planus is a relatively common skin disorder of unknown etiology. A wide variety of drugs have been implicated in its cause. Using five or more cases of drug-induced lichen planus reported in at least three separate reports with at least one case of probable cause by the scale of Naranjo et al as criteria, sufficient evidence exists that beta-blockers, methyldopa, penicillamine, quinidine, and quinine play a role in this disorder. Evidence is insufficient for angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, sulfonylurea agents, carbamazepine, gold, lithium, and a host of miscellaneous drugs. Gi
