BACKGROUND: The nervous system is a major target of HIV-1 infection and site of many complications of AIDS. Most of our knowledge pertaining to the range and frequency of neuropathology in HIV-1/AIDS is from large centres outside Canada in different social and health care settings. An infant with complex cardiac defects and isomerism had a persistent pyrexia of undetermined aetiology following cardiac surgery. Radionuclide leucocyte scan showed a focus of increased uptake in the right upper quadrant (RUQ) felt to be compatible with an abscess. However, correlation with clinical data and multimodality imaging allowed the correct diagnosis of ectopic splenic tissue in the RUQ to be made. Counselling around all stages of HIV infection is important for those infected and affected with HIV disease. Partner notification may promote safer sexual practices and increase HIV-related social support which might in turn prompt the psychological adjustment to a terminal illness. Few studies have examined the extent to which functional hand-use may be taught to girls with Rett syndrome after those skills have been lost. In this investigation, five females with classic Rett syndrome were taught to feed themselves using a method of prompting and reinforcement. All patients demonstrated improvements in their self-feeding skills. The results are discussed in terms of the factors that may influence the acquisition of skills in girls with Rett syndrome, and directions for future research and proposed.

The trend toward normalizing life in mental health institutions poses a challenge to the facility's staff in the area of sexual relations among clients. In addition to their other duties, nurses now are being asked to discuss sexual feelings with the clients as well as teach sex education, AIDS information, and safer-sex practices. Glossometry was used to teach the four point vowels (/i,ae,u,a/) to 6 profoundly hearing-impaired children. Prior to treatment, all subjects evidenced centralized tongue positions during vowel productions. After 15 to 20 fifty-minute training sessions over 3- to 4-week time periods, all subjects showed greater diversification of tongue postures for the vowels, especially in tongue height. This report reviews all episodes of group B streptococcal bacteremia during a four and a half year period in a large community teaching hospital.
