Thermodynamic determination of condensation behavior for the precursory elements of radioxenon following an underground nuclear explosion.

The measurement of radioactive xenon isotopes (radioxenon) in the atmosphere is a tool used to detect underground nuclear explosions, provided that some radioxenon escaped containment and that fractionation leading to the alteration of the relative proportions of these isotopes, is accounted for. After the explosion, volatilization followed by melting of the surrounding rocks produces a magma where the more refractory radioactive species get dissolved while the more volatile ones contribute to the gas phase that might escape. Indium, tin, antimony, tellurium and iodine are the main fission pro…

CdTe quantum dots induce apoptosis in RSC96 cells by disrupting calcium homeostasis and triggering subcellular structural dysfunction.

The toxic effects at the subcellular level of RSC96 cells after CdTe QDs exposure was still unclear. Meanwhile, whether the two classical mechanisms, oxidative stress and calcium ion overload, were involved in CdTe QDs-induced subcellular structural and functional dysfunction of RSC96 cells, which ultimately triggered cell death, remained to be verified. This research focused on the study of CdTe QDs exposure-induced oxidative stress in RSC96 cells, as well as the changes in intracellular calcium ion levels and intra-mitochondrial calcium ion levels. The subcellular structural and functional i

Improving range estimation for carbon ion radiotherapy using artificial neural networks with Si/CdTe Compton camera.

PURPOSE: This study aims to enhance carbon-ion range estimation using a Compton camera, improved through artificial neural network (ANN)-based event classification. METHODS: A Monte Carlo simulation was developed in Geant4. Carbon ions irradiated to a PMMA phantom and 511 keV gamma-rays emitted were detected by silicon/cadmium telluride (Si/CdTe) Compton cameras. An ANN was trained to identify true Compton events. Following event selection, the annihilation photon distribution was reconstructed using the list-mode maximum-likelihood expectation-maximization algorithm. The beam range was estim

Highly sensitive and novel dual-emission fluorescence nanosensor utilizing hybrid carbon dots-quantum dots for ratiometric determination of chlorpromazine.

Herein, a ratiometric fluorimetric nanosensor is introduced for the sensitive and selective analysis of chlorpromazine (CPZ) via employing blue-emitting B-doped carbon dots (B-CDs) as the reference fluorophore and green-emitting CdTe capped thioglycolic acid (TGA) quantum dots (TGA-CdTe-QDs) as the specific recognition probe. The sensor exhibits dual emission centered at 440 and 560 nm, under a single excitation wavelength of 340 nm. Upon the addition of ultra-trace amount of CPZ, the fluorescence signal of TGA-CdTe-QDs declines due to electron transfer process from excited TGA-CdTe-QDs to CPZ

Dual-sensitized heterojunction PDA/ZnO@MoS2 QDs combined with multilocus domino-like DNA cascade reaction for ultrasensitive photoelectrochemical biosensor.

In this work, by integrating with a highly efficient multilocus domino-like cascade reaction on DNA nanonet, an ultrasensitive PEC biosensor based on dual-sensitized PDA/ZnO@MoS2 QDs photoactive material as signal probe was proposed for detection of miRNA-182-5p. The dual-sensitized PDA/ZnO@MoS2 QD composed by both of p-n and S-scheme heterojunctions on electrode generated an extremely high initial PEC signal, which however quenched by CdTe QDs decorated on DNA nanonet owing to the significant p-n quenching effect. Thereafter, the output DNA (RS) from DSN enzyme-assisted target recycling ampli

A sensitive fluorescence sensor based on a glutathione modified quantum dot for visual detection of copper ions in real samples.

Copper (Cu2+), as a heavy metal, accumulates in the human body to a certain extent, which can induce various diseases and endanger human health. Rapid and sensitive detection of Cu2+ is highly desired. In present work, a glutathione modified quantum dot (GSH-CdTe QDs) was synthesized and applied in a "turn-off" fluorescence probe to detect Cu2+. The fluorescence of GSH-CdTe QDs could be rapidly quenched in the presence of Cu2+ through aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ), resulting from the interaction between the surface functional groups of GSH-CdTe QDs and Cu2+ and the electrostatic attractio

Construction of CdTe@γ-CD@RBD nanoprobe for Fe3+-sensing based on FRET mechanism in human serum.

A Fe3+ optical sensor (CdTe@γ-CD@RBD) has been developed by using gamma-cyclodextrin (γ-CD) as a bridge to link CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and a Rhodamine B derivative (RBD). The RBD molecule can enter the cavity of the γ-CD anchored onto the surfaces of the QDs. In the presence of Fe3+, the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) process from QDs to RBD will be initiated, rendering the nanoprobe to display a response to Fe3+. The degree of fluorescence quenching presented a satisfactory linearity between 10 and 60 μΜ with the incremental concentrations of Fe3+, and the calculated limit of

An off-on fluorescent nanoprobe for L-cysteine sensing based on the FRET effect.

A self-assembled fluorescent nanosensor for the determination of L-cysteine (Cys) was constructed based on the mechanism of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). In this system, CdTe/ZnS QDs serve as the energy donor while AuNPs serve as the receptor, resulting in the occurrence of FRET with dramatic fluorescence quenching of the QDs (turn off). Once Cys is added, AuNPs can adsorb Cys, leading to the release of the QDs. The process would inhibit the FRET, which contributed to the recovery of fluorescence (turn on) and an off-on fluorescence aptasensor for Cys detection was constructed

A dual-mode method for detection of miRNA based on the photoluminescence and resonance light scattering.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) hold potential as useful biomarkers for early diagnosis and evaluation of diverse cancers, but their low abundance and short length make the detection of miRNAs face low sensitivity and accuracy. Herein, a photoluminescence (PL)-resonance light scattering (RLS) dual-mode method was developed for the sensitive and accurate detection of miRNA-141 using CdTe quantum dots (QDs) and Au nanoparticles. The presence of miRNA-141 induced PL quenching and RLS increasing. The limit of detection (LOD) was as low as 3.7 fM, and the miRNA-141 was detected linearly in a range from 10 fM to

Effect of concentration and shell thickness on the optical behavior of aqueous CdTe/ZnSe core/shell quantum dots (QDs) exposed to ionizing radiation.

In this work CdTe/ZnSe core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized via a simple, rapid and room temperature photochemical approach. Optical properties of aqueous prepared CdTe/ZnSe QDs were studied systematically under gamma irradiation with dose range of 0 Gy to 20 kGy. The obtained results showed a regular red shift behavior versus gamma irradiation dose, in photoluminescence peak and absorption edge of the CdTe/ZnSe QDs. Structural properties of CdTe/ZnSe QDs before and after gamma irradiation were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman and Fourier-transform infrared (F

Dual-Color Fluorescent Hydrogel Microspheres Combined with Smartphones for Visual Detection of Lactate.

Since it is difficult for human eyes to distinguish between two identical colors with only <15% variation in brightness, mono-color fluorescent hydrogel microspheres have some limitations in the detection of lactate. Herein, we prepared novel dual-color fluorescent hydrogel microspheres, which can achieve hue transformation. Microspheres were prepared by introducing a fluorescent nanoparticle as the reference signal while CdTe QDs were used as the response signal. We used smartphones with image processing software to collect and analyze data. In this way, the signal of lactate was converted to

Development of magnetic nanoparticle assisted aptamer-quantum dot based biosensor for the detection of Escherichia coli in water samples.

The contamination of food and potable water with microorganisms may cause food-borne and water-borne diseases. The common contaminants include Escherichia coli (E. coli), Salmonella sp. etc. The conventional methods for monitoring the water quality for the presence of bacterial contaminants are time-consuming, expensive, and not suitable for rapid on-spot detection in field conditions. In the current study, super paramagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) were synthesized and conjugated with E. coli specific Aptamer I to detect E. coli cells qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The slu

A universal photoelectrochemical biosensor for dual microRNA detection based on two CdTe nanocomposites.

Various diseases are closely related to simultaneous changes of multiple miRNAs expression levels. It's of great significance to develop photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensors for multiple miRNA detection for both clinical diagnosis and biological mechanisms research. In this work we designed a novel PEC biosensor for simultaneous dual miRNA detection for the first time. Two nanocomposites, CdTe loaded carbon nitride nanosheets (CdTe-C3N4) with an anodic photocurrent and CdTe loaded 3D graphene hydrogel (CdTe-3DGH) with a cathodic photocurrent were prepared and showed enhanced PEC performances.

The potential benefits of using higher X-ray energies for macromolecular crystallography.

Using X-ray energies higher than those normally used (5-15 keV) for macromolecular X-ray crystallography (MX) at synchrotron sources can theoretically increase the achievable signal as a function of dose and reduce the rate of radiation damage. In practice, a major stumbling block to the use of higher X-ray energy has been the reduced quantum efficiency of silicon detectors as the X-ray energy increases, but hybrid photon-counting CdTe detectors are optimized for higher X-ray energies, and their performance has been steadily improving. Here the potential advantages of using higher incident bea
