Cognition in Euthymic Patients with Bipolar Disorder: Do Not Forget to Account for Anxiety!

PURPOSE: Despite the high prevalence of anxiety disorders in BD and its known impact on cognitive performance, the presence and severity of anxious symptoms is not systematically evaluated in studies on cognition in BD. Our aim was to determine if attention and/or inhibition of cognitive interference in euthymic patients with type I Bipolar Disorder (BD-I) is affected by symptoms of anxiety. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Eighty-seven euthymic BD-I patients were included. Patients with comorbidities other than Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) or Panic Disorder (PD) were excluded. State anxiety was m

Dental Anxiety and Influencing Factors in Adults.

Dental anxiety is one of the most common conditions present amongst the masses globally. It is this fear that makes individuals avoid seeking dental treatment which results in a deteriorated oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Discrepancies exist in the prevalence of dental anxiety based on gender, education levels, level of deprivation of a society and its socioeconomic status. In this study, a sample size of 522 respondents was collected. Kuppuswamy's socioeconomic status scale and modified dental anxiety scales were used to collect the necessary data. These data were analyzed by c

[Psychological evaluation of out-patients in our pain clinic using self-rating depression scale and state-trate anxiety inventory questionnaire].

In 98 out-patients who visited our pain clinic, we evaluated their psychological status before the first examination and one month after the treatment, using self-rating depression scale (SDS) and state-trate anxiety inventory (STAI). SDS, state anxiety, and trate anxiety scores were significantly higher in the patients with pain (trigeminal neuralgia, neck-shoulder-arm pain syndrome, lumbago and psychological pain, n = 55) compared with the patients without pain (sudden deafness and facial nerve palsy, n = 43) (P < 0.01, 0.05, 0.01). Of the patients with pain, patients with psychogenic pain s

Impact of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation on Anxiety Level in Young Adults.

Galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) is a non-invasive method used to stimulate the vestibular system. The vestibular system includes the sensors, neural pathways, vestibular nuclei and the cortical areas receiving integrated vestibular inputs. In addition to its role in postural control or gaze stabilization, the vestibular system is involved in some cognitive functions and in emotion processing. Several studies have revealed a modulating effect of vestibular stimulation on mood state, emotional control, and anxiety level. Nevertheless, GVS is known to induce motion sickness symptoms such as

Discriminating clinical from nonclinical manifestations of test anxiety: a validation study.

Test anxiety, although being a very common, severe, and impairing psychological disorder, is not coded as a separate diagnosis in the DSM or ICD. In the present study we investigated whether the Test Anxiety Inventory can be used to discriminate clinical and subclinical levels of test anxiety by comparing patients who seek treatment for their test anxiety in an outpatient clinic with carefully matched students with normal test anxiety. The data from 47 test-anxious patients as well as 41 healthy university students were examined. Results show that a cutoff score of ≥80 in the Test Anxiety Inve

Effects of tryptophan depletion on selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-remitted patients with obsessive compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Serotonergic antidepressants are first-line medication therapies for obsessive-compulsive disorder, however it is not known if synaptic serotonin availability is important for selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor efficacy. The present study tested the hypothesis that temporary reduction in central serotonin transmission, through acute tryptophan depletion, would result in an increase in anxiety in selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor-remitted obsessive-compulsive disorder patients. METHODS: Eight patients (four males) with obsessive-compulsive disorder who showed sustained cli
