Photodegradation of Reactive Black 5, Direct Red 28 and Direct Yellow 12 using UV, UV/H(2)O(2) and UV/H(2)O(2)/Fe(2+): a comparative study.

The photodegradation of three commercially available dyestuffs (C.I. Reactive Black 5, C.I. RB5, C.I. Direct Yellow 12, C.I. DY12, and C.I. Direct Red 28, C.I. DR28) by UV, UV/H(2)O(2) and UV/H(2)O(2)/Fe(II) processes was investigated in a laboratory-scale batch photoreactor equipped with an 16W immersed-type low-pressure mercury vapour lamp. The experimental results were assessed in terms of absorbance and total organic carbon (TOC) reduction. The initial concentration was kept constant at 100 mg l(-1) for all dyes. Initial results showed that, color removal efficiencies by UV or H(2)O(2) alo

Elevated triglyceride and decreased high density lipoprotein level in carbon disulfide workers in Taiwan.

Carbon disulfide (CS2) is a man-made product utilized primarily in the manufacture of viscose rayon. Overexposure to CS2 has been associated with an increase in coronary heart disease. The aims of this study were to examine the dose-response relationship of CS2 exposure and elevated lipid profile tests among CS2-exposed workers in Taiwan. A total of 132 workers were recruited from two viscose rayon plants. Air sampling was performed to determine the CS2 exposure of workers. Demographic data and work history were gathered by a standard self-administered questionnaire. Lipid profile tests were a

Heart-rate variability of carbon disulfide-poisoned subjects in Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Mass poisoning by carbon disulfide (CS(2)) occurred in a viscose-rayon factory in Korea. Including 38 who had died, 830 employees were diagnosed as CS(2) poisoned. We evaluated the heart-rate variability (HRV) among CS(2)-poisoned subjects, to discover whether CS(2) may affect HRV and whether its toxic effect persists after exposure has ceased. METHODS: The case group comprised 71 retired male workers with CS(2) poisoning. The control group comprised 127 public officials of the same age-range who had no history of organic-solvent exposure and cardiovascular diseases. Information o

Biological monitoring of workers occupationally exposed to carbon disulphide in a rayon plant in Brazil: validity of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) in urine samples taken in different times, during and after the real exposure period.

Fifteen workers from a rayon plant in Brazil were monitored. Air samples were taken during a mean period of 5.8 hours out of an 8 hour workshift, in three different adsorbing tubes. Five urine samples were taken at 4 hour interval from the beginning of the shift, and at the beginning of the next shift in which 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid (TTCA) concentration was analysed. Data from seventeen "individuals" were statistically studied, with the aim of establishing the best and the most practical sampling strategy of biological monitoring for workers occupationally exposed to CS2. For tho

[The incidence and nature of hepatobiliary system diseases in workers of the Ternopol Clothing Association].

A detailed clinico-laboratory examination of workers of Ternopol sewing factories revealed in 13.9% chronic inflammatory diseases of the hepatobiliary system which exceeds 4 times the indices of seeking medical advice (3.5%) mainly due to latent course. Entropy of blood serum protein data are more informative than bilirubin and transaminase data used in evolution of homeostasis disorders in these patients.

A comparative environmental and medical study of dust exposure in jute and cotton mills in Burma.

Jute is extensively cultivated and processed in Burma, as well as "lower-grade" cotton. This study was conducted there to compare dust exposure in jute and cotton mills, to study the acute and chronic effects of dust exposure on workers, and to establish exposure-response relationship. A sample of 799 male and female workers in two jute mills and two cotton textile mills, as well as a control group of 153 matching subjects, was examined, and dust exposure in the work environment was evaluated. Very high dust concentrations existed in the early stages of jute processing and sorting, which were

Byssinosis in carpet weavers exposed to wool contaminated with endotoxin.

All the 303 full time day workers in a carpet weaving factory were submitted to a physical examination, chest radiography, and vitalograph test, and answered a respiratory questionnaire. Fifty four healthy non-exposed subjects served as controls. Dust concentrations and concentrations of bacterial endotoxin were measured. Of the 303 workers, 259 (85.5%) had airway symptoms and 62 (20.5%) had maximum mid-expiratory flow (MMF) values of less than 60% compared with 9.2% of the controls. The symptoms in 68 workers (22%) were compatible with byssinosis and 36 of these workers underwent vitalography

Mortality of flax workers.

A total of 2528 workers in flax mills in Northern Ireland were followed up for 16 years. Follow-up was 97% complete. Deaths were identified and date and cause ascertained. Expected deaths were calculated on the basis of age and sex specific rates for Northern Ireland. Both male and female workers had fewer deaths than expected, and mortality showed no clear relationship with type of work. There was a small excess in the mortality of the workers who had had byssinosis at the time of the original survey, but there was no evidence that the more severe grades of byssinosis were associated with hig
