In the chest X-ray, we observe tension pneumothorax (TPX) as wide radiolucent view in a hemithorax and pushing the mediastinal structures contralateral. Tube thoracostomy is a well-established method for treating traumatic pneumothorax. Using a protocol based on the presence of air leakage and degree of expansion of the lung, it is possible in most cases to remove the drain within 24 h with minimal morbidity and excellent results. One hundred fourteen patients having 121 subclavian venipunctures were studied retrospectively. Eight pneumothoraces occurred (6.6%) and were most frequent after the insertion of large catheters, or when the subclavian area was distorted by previous venipuncture or radiation.
