The sonographical and functional sequelae of de Quervain's subacute thyroiditis: long-term follow-up.

Fifty-three patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) were seen during the acute stage of the disease. HLA-Bw 35 was positive in 33 out of 39 tested patients. At first presentation, all examined patients (N = 23) had ultrasound abnormalities (generalized hypodensity, single or multiple hypodense areas). Serum T4 and/or T3 were increased in 24/52, free T4 in 11/23, and the TSH response to TRH was flat in 8/11 patients. Six of 12 in whom volumetry was performed had goitres. Thirty-seven patients were re-examined after a mean follow-up interval of 46.5 months. At this follow-up, serum T4, free T4

Serum free thyroxine and thyroxine-binding globulin concentrations in early phase of subacute thyroiditis.

Serum total thyroxine (T4), total triiodothyronine (T3), T4-binding globulin (TBG), free T4(FT4) and free T3(FT3) concentrations and the T3-uptake(T3-U) value were estimated in 11 patients with subacute thyroiditis, and compared with the same parameters in 11 patients with Graves' disease, whose serum T4 concentrations were similar to the former group. Seven patients with subacute thyroiditis, who were treated with dicrofenac sodium alone, were investigated as to the sequential changes in serum parameters during their clinical courses. The mean serum T3-U value and FT4, T3 and FT3 concentratio

[The relationship between serum IAP and peripheral K cells in patients with subacute thyroiditis].

In a previous study, we showed that the percentage of peripheral K cells of patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT), determined by a plaque-forming cell technique, was significantly lower than that of normal controls, and that ther sera from SAT significantly inhibited the activity of K cells in normal lymphocytes, suggesting that in the sera of SAT there is some factor which inhibits K cell activity. In this study, we investigated the relationship between K cells and the serum immunosuppressive acidic protein (IAP), the sex difference in percentage of K cells, and the absolute count of K cel

The prevalence of positive thyroid autoantibodies in patients with subacute thyroiditis: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is a transient inflammatory disorder of the thyroid gland with a possible viral etiology. We conducted this study to estimate the pooled prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in SAT patients. This question arose due to the varying reports on the positivity rates of thyroid autoantibodies among SAT patients. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science from their inception until March 25th, 2023. Observational studies reporting the positivity rate of thyroid autoantibodies for more than ten patients were included. We used the Joanna Briggs

A Rare Case of Subacute Painful Thyroiditis Causing Thyroid Storm and a Successful Trial of Propylthiouracil.

Thyroid storm is a rare, life-threatening condition characterized by severe or exaggerated clinical manifestations of thyrotoxicosis, commonly occurring in patients with longstanding, untreated hyperthyroidism such as Graves' disease and toxic nodular goiter. Subacute painful thyroiditis, also known as de Quervain thyroiditis, is a self-limited inflammatory disease of the thyroid gland that is characterized by neck pain, a tender diffuse thyroid goiter, elevated inflammatory markers, and a predictable course of thyroid function evolution. Rarely, it can cause thyroid storm. Herein, we report a

Subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis after lobectomy in a patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis is anautoimmune thyroid disease presenting with transient thyrotoxicosis as well as transient hypothyroidism. Several factors have been thought to be the initiating event in subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis. However, subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis that develops after thyroid lobectomy has not yet been reported in the literature. We report a case of subacute lymphocytic thyroiditis after lobectomy in a patient with papillary thyroid carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 30-year-old Korean woman was referred to our center for thyroid tumor operation. S

The incidence of thyroid stimulating blocking antibodies during the hypothyroid phase in patients with subacute thyroiditis.

The etiology of subacute (de Quervain's) thyroiditis (SAT) is uncertain, although it probably represents a nonspecific inflammatory response by the thyroid to a variety of viruses. It has been suggested that nonimmune processes are involved in SAT patients who have negative autoantibody titers. The disease has a variable course; although it is self-limited in most cases, some patients develop transient hypothyroidism, and others do not during the recovery period. The present study was performed to evaluate the occurrence of TSH receptor antibody (TRAb), measured by RRA (TSH binding inhibitor),

Increased pertechnetate and radioiodine uptake in the thyroid gland with subacute thyroiditis and concurrent Graves' disease.

OBJECTIVE: A 61 years old woman presented with low grade fever and weight loss for a month. Thyroid function tests showed hyperthyroidism: increased technetium-99m pertechnetate ((99m)Tc O(-)4) and radioiodine ((131)I) uptake and elevated thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibodies (TSHRAb). She also had high erythrocyte sedimentation rate. Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies of left thyroid lobe revealed subacute thyroiditis (SAT). Simultaneous occurrence of SAT and Graves' disease (GD) was diagnosed. The patient was in good physical condition after two doses of betamethasone and daily

Permissive role of thyrotropin on thyroid radioiodine uptake during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis.

Serial measurements of serum triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), thyrotropin (TSH), and 4-hr thyroidal 131I uptake were carried out in nine patients with subacute thyroiditis. In the acute phase, suppressed TSH and 131I uptake were observed simultaneously with the elevations of T3 and T4. Thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) failed to increase TSH in all patients studied. The mean value of an increment in serum TSH was only 1.8 muU/ml during the recovery phase when 131I uptake was normal or hypernormal. In addition, an elevated 131I uptake was not necessarily associated with an immediate inc

Delayed adjustment of the pituitary response to variations in circulating thyroid hormones in a case of subacute thyroiditis.

In a case of subacute de Quervain thyroiditis characterized by a period of pronounced hypermetabolism followed by hypometabolism, levels of T4, T3 and the TSH response to TRH were repeatedly measured. As expected, the response to TRH was absent or low during the hypermetabolic phase, high during the hypometabolic phase and returned to normal with recovery. However, at the beginning and at the end of the hypometabolic phase, while circulating levels of T3 and T4 both lay in the subnormal range, two periods of inadequate response to TRH could be demonstrated. During the first period, the respons

Sonographic features of thyroid nodules that may help distinguish clinically atypical subacute thyroiditis from thyroid malignancy.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate sonographic features for distinguishing clinically atypical subacute thyroiditis from malignant thyroid nodules. METHODS: A total of 165 hypoechoic thyroid nodules without calcification in 135 patients with histologic diagnosis were included in this study. These nodules were classified into 2 groups: a thyroiditis group (55 nodules in 36 patients) and a malignancy group (110 nodules in 99 patients). The sonographic features of the groups were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: No significant differences were detected for the variables of

Subacute thyroiditis in a lateral thyroid gland: evaluation of the pituitary-thyroid axis during the acute destructive and the recovery phases.

Subacute thyroiditis in a lateral, ectopic thyroid has been previously unreported. A 4 10/12-YEAR-OLD GIRL HAD AN ENLARGING MASS IN THE LEFT UPPER ANTERIOR NECK. Initially, the serum concentration of T4 was normal, T3 was elevated, and TSH was undetectable without response to TRH. RAI uptake was 1%. The data were consistent with subacute thyroiditis. Twelve weeks later the serum concentration of T4 was low and TSH was elevated; thyroid replacement therapy was given for 20 weeks. When this was discontinued, there was an initial increase and then a decrease in the TSH values accompanied by an in

Preventive effect of prednisolone on permanent hypothyroidism in subacute thyroiditis: retrospective study of 743 cases.

PURPOSE: Permanent hypothyroidism (PH) after subacute thyroiditis (SAT) requires lifelong thyroid hormone replacement therapy. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors for PH and its association with treatment. METHODS: A retrospective observational study of 743 patients diagnosed with SAT from 2016 to 2019 was conducted. RESULTS: Initial treatment was prednisolone (PSL) in 332 patients (44.7%), nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in 364 (49.0%), and rest without medication in 47 (6.3%). Of the NSAID-treated patients, 238 (65.4%) switched to PSL. Final treatment was PSL in

Analysis of vitamin D nutritional status and disease risk factors in patients with subacute thyroiditis.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (VD) deficiency has become a global public health problem, and published studies have demonstrated that patients with subacute thyroiditis (SAT) have worse VD nutritional status and that VD supplementation may alleviate thyroid-related diseases by fighting against infections and mediating autoimmunity. OBJECTIVES: This study explored the correlation between serum VD levels and the risk and extent of disease in patients with SAT. DESIGN: A case-control study. METHODS: We included patients with SAT diagnosed at the First People's Hospital of Jining City between September
