OBJECTIVES: Prostaglandins are critical mediators of inflammation and affect both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses. Recent findings show that T and B cells express COX-2 upon activation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the potential occurrence of COX-1 and COX-2 immunoreactivity in cases of chronic tonsillitis and to determine the sites of their expression. Based on the current literature data and the results of original studies on the role of non-infectious (atopic) allergy in pathogenesis of chronic tonsillitis (CT), the author considers it unjustified under the current state of the art to characterize CT as an infectious allergic disease. He maintains that the classification of chronic tonsillitis proposed by Preobrazhensky and Pal'chun remains the most acceptable one for the practical purposes.

Analysis of the results of a bacteriological study involving 218 patients with various forms of chronic tonsillitis (CT) has demonstrated that they were significantly different in terms of the seeding rate of beta-hemolytic group A Streptococci (BHAS). OBJECTIVE: To compare intracapsular tonsillectomy (IT) and traditional tonsillectomy (TT) in treating recurrent adenotonsillitis or streptococcal pharyngitis.
DESIGN: Retrospective chart review.
SETTING: Tertiary care pediatric referral center.
RESULTS: Of 166 patients who met all inclusion criteria, 117 received TT and 49 received IT. Seventeen TT patients and 8 IT patients were treated at least once postoperatively for streptococcal pharyngitis or tonsillitis. Surgical activity in chronic tonsillitis analysed for the last 40 years diminished. In particular, the number of tonsillectomies made in ENT hospitals of cities reduced significantly leading to increased occurrence of local complications of chronic tonsillitis and paratonsillar abscesses.

BACKGROUND: The reasons for recurrent adenotonsillitis are poorly understood.
METHODS: The in situ composition of microbiota of nasal (5 children, 25 adults) and of hypertrophied adenoid and tonsillar tissue (50 children, 20 adults) was investigated using a broad range of fluorescent oligonucleotide probes targeted to bacterial rRNA. Lingual tonsillitits is a relatively uncommon pathology that affects specially patients with previous palatine tonsillectomy and its clinical behaviour is even more notorious than an acute tonsillitis. We report 3 cases hospitalized by our ENT Department analysing the initial symptoms, complementary tests, treatment and clinical evolution. In one of the patients that diagnosis probably was secondary to a complication due to an infectious mononucleosis and finally he was operated by surgical cauterization the lingual tonsils.

The microflora of palatal tonsils was studied in 84 children with chronic tonsillitis in comparison with that in the control group of 38 healthy children. Trace elements are indispensable for life and play a very important role in the essential functions. Serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels were estimated by ELISA in 50 children with chronic tonsillitis before and after tonsillectomy. When compared with the control group, mean serum IgE concentration was found to be significantly higher in children with chronic tonsillitis (P less than 0.001). After tonsillectomy the levels returned to normal.
