Postoperative fractures of the lingual plate after bilateral sagittal split osteotomies.

We encountered the unusual complication of postoperative fracture of the lingual plate in four patients after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy. We then did a retrospective review to identify possible risk factors. Over a 1-year period we did 52 bilateral split osteotomies. The patients' casenotes were examined and a number of variables were recorded, including surgical technique, and the patient's sex, age, presence or absence of third molars, and the height of the mandible in the region of the osteotomy. Significant risk factors were a vertical mandibular height of 2 cm or less distal to th

The cranial osteology and feeding ecology of the metriorhynchid crocodylomorph genera Dakosaurus and Plesiosuchus from the late Jurassic of Europe.

BACKGROUND: Dakosaurus and Plesiosuchus are characteristic genera of aquatic, large-bodied, macrophagous metriorhynchid crocodylomorphs. Recent studies show that these genera were apex predators in marine ecosystems during the latter part of the Late Jurassic, with robust skulls and strong bite forces optimized for feeding on large prey. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Here we present comprehensive osteological descriptions and systematic revisions of the type species of both genera, and in doing so we resurrect the genus Plesiosuchus for the species Dakosaurus manselii. Both species are diag

Automated deep learning detection of orthodontically induced external apical root resorption in maxillary incisors on panoramic radiographs.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop and compare two YOLOv12-based deep learning models-object detection and pose estimation-for the automatic classification of orthodontically induced external apical root resorption (OIEARR) using panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 624 panoramic radiographs obtained from 312 patients aged 10-18 who underwent at least 12 months of fixed orthodontic treatment were retrospectively analyzed. Each maxillary central and lateral incisor was graded for OIEARR severity on a 4-point scale (Grade 0 to Grade 3) by two experienced orthodontists s

Comparison of the accuracy of Cameriere's European formula with CBCT and panoramic radiography in dental age estimation in Turkish children.

This study aims to assess the reliability of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and panoramic radiography (PR) concerning dental age (DA) estimation using the Cameriere European Formula for teeth with open apices, and to evaluate their correlation with chronological age (CA) in Turkish children. The study involved 101 children aged between 6 and 14 years. DA was estimated based on the normalized measurements of the number of teeth with open apices (xi) and closed apices (N0) in the developing permanent teeth of the participants, assessed through the use of CBCT and PR. The agreement between

Influence of simulated apical resorption following orthodontic treatment on working length determination: an in vitro study.

AIM: External apical root resorption (EARR) is a common complication that may occur during and after orthodontic treatment. In case of need of endodontic therapy for a tooth with EARR, it has not been clarified yet which benefits can be derived by the use of electronic apex locators (EALs). The present study aimed to assess the accuracy of EALs on extracted teeth before and after simulation of EARR subsequent to orthodontic treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standard access cavities were prepared on 64 single-rooted teeth. After working length (CWL) determination, specimens were embedded in an

Do different orthodontic archwires alter the biomechanical effects of open coil springs on dentoalveolar structures? A finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: In this study, the effect of open-arch mechanics on the displacement and von Mises stress distributions in mandibular teeth was investigated using a finite element analysis. METHODS: After mandibular bone, teeth, and periodontal ligament formation, 0.022-in brackets and 0.016 × 0.022-in tubes were placed on the buccal equatorial line. Four scenarios were modeled using 2 materials (nickel-titanium [NiTi] and stainless steel [SS]) and 2 arch wire sizes (0.016-in and 0.016 × 0.022-in). Displacement and von Mises stresses were analyzed via finite element analysis (Algor Fempro, ALGOR

Pathophysiology of Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis Arising from Marginal Periodontitis with Ascending Pulpitis.

OBJECTIVE: Ascending pulpitis refers to inflammation of the dental pulp that progresses from the apical region toward the coronal portion of the tooth. The purpose of this study is to investigate novel insights into the pathophysiology of OMS arising from marginal periodontitis with ascending pulpitis. METHODS: Five adult patients diagnosed with OMS arising from marginal periodontitis were examined. Histological analysis of the causative teeth of OMS was conducted. RESULTS: No coronal lesions (e.g., dental carious lesions) were observed in the causative teeth of OMS. Histologically, the peri

Accidental Extrusion of Sodium Hypochlorite in a Patient Taking Alendronate: A Case Report With an 8-Year Follow-up.

Extrusion of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) is a very rare accident with the most common complications including pain, swelling, and hematoma. It can occur even if procedural guidelines, predisposing conditions, and risk factors are taken into consideration. A 59-year-old female patient was admitted to the endodontics department to treat a left maxillary first premolar (World Dental Federation tooth 24). The medical history included osteoporosis and systemic medication with alendronate. Initially, the diagnosis was "symptomatic irreversible pulpitis" with "normal apical tissues." During instrumen

An endodontic-periodontal lesion with primary periodontal disease: a case report on its bacterial profile.

The microflora in the periodontal pockets can affect the dental pulp and cause endodontic-periodontal lesions or retrograde pulpitis. Here we report an endodontic-periodontal lesion together with its bacterial profile. The lesion occurred in the maxillary right first molar of a 40-year-old woman who presented at our hospital complaining of a violent toothache since the previous night. Clinically, the tooth was caries-free and an electric pulp test showed it to be vital. The tooth showed signs of advanced periodontitis and the periodontal pocket was deep, reaching the apex of the palatal root.

[Autotransplantation of incompletely formed molars in young patients].

Autotransplantation of molars is a valuable treatment option for tooth replacement in adolescents. In a retrospective analysis of 13 young patients, 17 molars were transplanted, with an average follow-up of 16 months. Root formation was 60-90% at the time of transplantation, and the apex was not yet fully formed. Primarily, (3rd) maxillary molars were transplanted into the mandible. All transplanted molars integrated physiologically, without ankylosis or need for endodontic treatment. One case of limited, non-progressive resorption was observed. None of the teeth showed deepened pockets or per

Glossectomy as an adjunct to correct an open-bite malocclusion with shortened maxillary central incisor roots.

A young man, 19 years of age, with the chief complaint of an anterior open bite, came for orthodontic treatment with a skeletal Class I relationship, anterior open bite, shortened maxillary incisor roots, and relative macroglossia. The malocclusion was treated by extracting the maxillary first premolars and using a fixed edgewise appliance. A partial glossectomy was performed before the orthognathic surgery with a 3-piece segmental LeFort I mandibular setback, and advancement was achieved with a reduction genioplasty. A functional and esthetic occlusion with an improved facial profile was esta

Nonsurgical Management of Horizontal Root Fracture with Necrotic Apical Segment and Coronal Cervical Abfraction using Mineral Trioxide Aggregate: Case Report.

Horizontal root fractures are relatively rare dental findings and often pose diagnostic and treatment challenges. In addition to a horizontal root fracture, this case report also demonstrates a finding of a noncarious cervical abfraction lesion, which involves the loss of dental hard tissue from the cervical areas of teeth through processes unrelated to caries. A 22 -year-old healthy female patient was complaining of the maxillary left first premolar area with a history of dental trauma. Clinically, the tooth presented with a noncarious cervical abfraction lesion. Endodontic testing showed a n

Eruption of third permanent molars after the extraction of second permanent molars. Part 1: Assessment of third molar position and size.

The eruptive path of third molars after extraction of second molars was examined in 63 patients. Panoramic radiographs from the start and the end of active treatment and 3 or more years after treatment were assessed. Study models were used to compare the size of the second and third molars and to assess the final position of the third molars. All third molars erupted; none became impacted. During eruption, maxillary third molar crowns uprighted and maintained their angulation as they came into occlusion. Mandibular third molar crowns continued to upright significantly mesiodistally after activ

Horizontal/oblique root fractures in the palatal root of maxillary molars with associated periodontal destruction: case reports.

AIM: To report two cases of palatal root fracture in maxillary molars that were successfully managed in the short term by root canal treatment and root amputation. SUMMARY: In the first case, a 48-year-old woman with bony destruction and a deep periodontal pocket on the palatal root of tooth 26 (FDI) underwent root canal treatment. Bleeding into the palatal canal and radiolucent lines over the root suggested a fracture. Further evidence was provided by an electronic apex locator. Subsequent surgery confirmed the presence of a horizontal root fracture and the fractured root was removed. In the

Autotransplantation of teeth (I). Indications for transplantation with a follow-up of 51 cases.

The indications for autotransplantation of teeth in 45 patients have been analysed together with a follow-up of the success rate of surgery. Most of the transplants were mature teeth, 37 out of 51, with closed apex. The majority of transplantations were carried out in order to replace single tooth losses (40) but in 11 cases, the teeth were used as an abutment in prosthetic rehabilitation. In 14 cases, an impacted tooth was transplanted to its normal position. The follow-up ranged from 3 months up to 10 years. No progressive root resorption has been observed so far; only 6 cases with slight su
