The dental pathology of northern elephant seals (Mirounga angustirostris).

Skulls (n=104) of northern elephant seals from California were examined macroscopically. The animals varied in age but the numbers of each s … 2b and 2c, respectively. Forty-six skulls, of which 43 were from adults, showed signs of attrition. Tooth fractures were uncommon, affecting only 33 teeth (1.2%). One skull showed an "incremental line" suggestive of enamel hypoplasia. Periodontal hard tissue lesions were seen in 44.3% of all teeth present (46.0% of skulls). Six cases of periapical disease with bo …

A Comparison of Volume of Tissue Removed and Biomechanical Analysis of Different Access Cavity Designs in 2-rooted Mandibular First Molars: A Multisample 3-dimensional Finite Element Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to compare the biomechanical properties and the amount of coronal tissue removed among the different access cavities with a multisample 3-dimensional finite element analysis in the mandibular first molar. The correlation between the amount of tissue removed and the fracture resistance of the teeth was also analyzed. METHODS: Micro-computed tomography data from 20 2-rooted mandibular first molars were included in this study as 3-dimensional modeling prototypes. Models of untreated molars and molars treated with the traditional access cavity (TradAC), the

Shear resistance of fiber-reinforced composite and metal dentin pins.

PURPOSE: To assess whether dentin pins increase shear resistance of extensive composite restorations and to compare performance of mini fiber-reinforced composite (FRC) anchors with metal dentin pins in the laboratory. METHODS: 30 extracted sound molars were randomly divided into three groups. Occlusal surfaces were ground flat with a standard surface area and resin composite restorations were made in Group A. In Groups B and C similar restorations were made, with additionally four metal pins placed in Group B and four FRC pins in Group C. Specimens were statically loaded until failure occurr

Masticatory tensile developed in upper anterior teeth with chronic apical periodontitis. A finite-element analysis study.

Commonly is accepted that a non-vital tooth has a higher risk of root fracture but there is a relatively little knowledge about the specific biomechanical behavior of non-vital frontal teeth with chronic apical periodontitis. The aim of our study was to evaluate the deformation and tensile generated in these teeth while vertically loading them because it is crucial to assess the moment when the absorbed occlusal forces exceed the elasticity of root dentine. Using the method of finite-element analysis, we highlighted the distribution patterns of the compressive and tension tensile, as well as t

Mechanical evaluation of newly developed mouthpiece using polyethylene terephthalate glycol for transoral robotic surgery.

Transoral robotic surgery (TORS), performed with the da Vinci surgical system (da Vinci), has been classified as a surgical approach for benign and malignant lesions of the oral cavity and laryngopharynx. It provides several unique advantages, which include a three-dimensional magnified view, ability to see and work around curves or angles, and the availability of two or three robotic arms. At present, however, the da Vinci surgical system does not provide haptic feedback. The potential risks specific to the transoral use of the da Vinci include tooth injury, mucosal laceration, ocular injury,

Medial maxillary (nasomaxillary buttress) fracture: Two case reports.

RATIONALE: Medial maxillary fractures are defined as fractures of the medial aspect of the maxilla, that is, fractures of the nasomaxillary buttress. The diagnosis of medial maxillary (nasomaxillary buttress) fractures is challenging because of its similarities with nasal, and naso-orbito-ethmoidal (NOE) fractures. PATIENT CONCERN: The patients included a 17-year-old Japanese man and a 37-year-old Japanese woman with facial injuries. Swelling of the affected cheek, nasal hemorrhage, periorbital ecchymosis, and C-shaped deviation of the nasal dorsum with normal nasal tip and root position were

[Maxillofacial fractures in children].

With regard to aetiology, location and therapy, fractures of the facial skeleton in childhood occupy a special position due to the anatomico-morphologic pecularities of the infantile skull. To verify this statement, the author analysed the medical records of 58 patients with fractures of the facial skeleton, having an age range from 1 to 14 years. The fracture incidence was 9.3% as related to the total number of fractures of the facial skeleton. Traffic accidents (41%) were the main cause of these injuries. Clinical and radiographic follow-up examinations of 37 patients (after an average perio

Re-eruption of an intruded immature permanent incisor with necrotic pulp: a case report.

Intrusive luxation is a serious dental injury that causes damage to the pulp and supporting structures of a tooth because of its dislocation into the alveolar process. This paper presents the case of the re-eruption of a severely intruded immature permanent incisor with a crown-root fracture. A 9-year-old boy was referred to the clinic 1 day after a fall. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed intrusive luxation of the immature left permanent incisor and a crown-root fracture without pulp exposure. Palatal gingivectomy was done 2 weeks later to facilitate re-eruption. Root canal thera

Is Inflammation a Friend or Foe for Orthodontic Treatment?: Inflammation in Orthodontically Induced Inflammatory Root Resorption and Accelerating Tooth Movement.

The aim of this paper is to provide a review on the role of inflammation in orthodontically induced inflammatory root resorption (OIIRR) and accelerating orthodontic tooth movement (AOTM) in orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) is stimulated by remodeling of the periodontal ligament (PDL) and alveolar bone. These remodeling activities and tooth displacement are involved in the occurrence of an inflammatory process in the periodontium, in response to orthodontic forces. Inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins (PGs), interleukins (Ils; IL-1, -6, -17), the tumor necrosis

Multiple internal resorption in permanent teeth associated with hyperparathyroidism.

Internal resorption has been described as a resorptive defect of internal aspect of tooth. It is caused by transformation of normal pulp tissue into granulomatous tissue with giant cells which resorb dentin. Though mostly idiopathic in origin, trauma, caries and restorative procedures have also been suggested to be contributing factors of internal resorption of pulp. Most of the internal resorption cases were found on isolated individual tooth. There are few case reports on multiple root resorptions. External root resorption have been frequently associated with systemic disorders like renal di

Diagnosis and management of root fractures and periodontal ligament injury.

Although root fractures are among the less common oral injuries (6 percent), a careful diagnostic evaluation of such injuries is required to arrive at an appropriate treatment plan. The position of the fracture in the root will determine the proper management. The problem of luxation due to trauma often involves the use of dental splints, which, if not properly designed, may cause root resorption, loss of alveolar bone, pulpal necrosis and pulp canal obliteration. The guidelines for the type of splint to use and conditions under which it should be placed are presented.

Dental erosion. Definition, classification and links.

An overview of tooth wear, i.e. of non-carious destructive processes affecting the teeth including abrasion, demastication, attrition, abfraction, resorption and erosion is presented. The nomenclature and classification of dental erosion commonly used in the dental literature are summarized. They are based on etiology (extrinsic, intrinsic, idiopathic), on clinical severity (Classes I to III), on pathogenetic activity (manifest, latent) or on localization (perimolysis). Interactions between erosion and abrasion, demastication, attrition, and abfraction as well as caries and low salivary flow r

Comparison of Optical Properties and Fracture Loads of Multilayer Monolithic Zirconia Crowns with Different Yttria Levels.

Multilayer monolithic zirconia, which incorporates polychromatic layers that mimic natural tooth gradients, offers enhanced aesthetics and functionality while reducing debonding risks and improving fabrication efficiency. However, uncertainties remain regarding the fracture characteristics of multilayer monolithic zirconia crowns under occlusal loading, whether composed of uniform or combined yttria levels. The current study investigated how variations in yttria levels and thicknesses affected the optical properties and fracture loads of multilayer monolithic zirconia. Samples of multilayer mo

Pathological mandibular fractures following third molar removal.

Seventeen patients, who presented mandibular fractures following third molar removal, were treated in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University Hospital Freiburg between 2000 and 2004. Clinical and radiological data were analysed to evaluate the possible risk of fracture following third molar removal. Our data show an increased rate of pathological mandibular fractures in males over 40 years of age, following removal of a difficult lower wisdom tooth with a high retention grade that necessitated bone removal. Fourteen out of 17 fractures occurred postoperatively. In si

The influence of mandibular third molar classification on fixation stability of mandibular angle fractures: a biomechanical finite element analysis.

BACKGROUND: The mandibular third molar (MTM) is frequently present in mandibular angle fractures treated with the Champy technique. Clinical research on MTM management has focused predominantly on postoperative complications, and several studies have suggested that retention may confer a stabilizing effect on the fracture - the so-called "splinting effect" proposed by Wolujewicz. However, this stabilizing role has never been quantitatively verified at the biomechanical level, and the geometric feature of the retained tooth responsible for this effect has not been identified. The aim of this th
