Alveolar bone loss in two children with short-bowel syndrome receiving total parenteral nutrition.

Two preschool children who were receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for short-bowel syndrome (SBS) were noted to have radiographic evidence of alveolar bone loss in their primary dentition. Tooth mobility, gingival recession, and premature tooth loss were clinical findings in these children. Both had a 2-year history of recurrent infections and fluctuating serum electrolytes prior to identification of their dental problems.

[Immediate repair of labial bone defects].

In this paper some surgical techniques are described to prevent or restore the characteristic and esthetically disturbing resorption defect in the anterior alveolar process as a result of tooth loss. One-stage approaches are described. Submucosal implants are used in combination with conventional fixed prosthodontics. If a single tooth replacement by means of an implant is aimed at, the split-crest technique may be a valuable alternative for an autologous bone graft or guided bone regeneration procedure.

The erosive effect of various drinks, foods, stimulants, medications and mouthwashes on human tooth enamel.

Two forms of non-carious dental disorder - erosive tooth hard tissue loss and dental erosion - have been increasingly observed in recent years. Dental erosion is the chemical loss of dental hard substances caused by exposure to acids not derived from oral bacteria. Mechanical forces from, for example, the tongue, the cheeks or toothbrushing, increase loss of partly-demineralized tooth surfaces and the cumulative loss of dental hard tissue is defined as erosive tooth wear (ETW). Dental hard tissue losses which occur because of very frequent acid exposure, such as through increased vomiting, but

[A study on effects of immediate bone grafting at mandibular first molar fresh extraction socket on maintaining alveolar bone height after space closure].

Objective: To investigate the effect of immediate bone grafting at mandibular first molar extraction socket on maintaining alveolar bone height after space closure. Methods: Thirty adult orthodontic patients who need to extract mandibular first molar, totally 38 target teeth, were included. The samples were divided into two groups randomly: graft group and non-graft group. All extraction space was closed orthodontically. Dental models of all patients were taken before extraction (T0), before space closure(T1) and after space closure (T2). The distance, time of the space closure and the velocit

Prognostic performance of the 2017 World Workshop classification on staging and grading of periodontitis compared with the British Society of Periodontology's implementation.

BACKGROUND: The British Society of Periodontology (BSP) implemented a simplified version of the 2017 World Workshop Classification (WWC) on staging and grading of periodontitis, for use in UK clinical practice. The aim of this study was to assess the long-term (>10 years) prognostic capability of BSP's implementation (BSP-i) compared with the 2017 WWC, using periodontal-related tooth loss (TLP) as a disease outcome. METHODS: Data on medical history, smoking status, and clinical periodontal parameters were retrieved from 270 patients who received non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy f…

Dental restorations: a risk factor for periodontal attachment loss?

BACKGROUND: Dental caries and restorations in proximal tooth surfaces often impinge upon the periodontal biological width. AIM: This study examines whether these factors may contribute to risk for periodontal attachment loss at these sites. METHODS: The study is based upon data from the Dunedin Multidisciplinary Health and Development Study, a long-standing cohort study. Approximal tooth surfaces of 884 study members were evaluated for restorations and caries at age 26 and again at 32 years, and probing depth and gingival recession were recorded in millimetres at age 32. Attachment loss was

A split-mouth study on periodontal and microbial parameters in children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: Complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) is a hereditary or multifactorial malformation that can be corrected successfully with a combined orthodontic, surgical and restorative treatment. Such multidisciplinary treatment takes many years and demands a lot of attention to both patients' teeth and periodontium. OBJECTIVES: This split-mouth study aimed to compare the periodontal health as well as the microbial parameters between cleft and non-cleft region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 75 patients (52 males, 23 females) between 8 and 20 years with a complete unilateral cleft lip and

Alveolar socket remodeling: The tug-of-war model.

Bone change after tooth extraction has been well documented by different studies. Tooth extraction is followed by loss in height and width of the alveolar process. After tooth loss, the natural healing process is governed by the formation of the blood clot, which is stabilized by a fibrin bridge, the starting structure for new bone apposition. The hematoma is then replaced by the granulation tissue which is rich in fibroblasts that synthesize the extra-cellular matrix. The adjoining of wound edges requires further contraction of the healing tissue which is exerted by myofibroblasts. Excessive …

Modified Willet's appliance for bilateral loss of multiple deciduous molars: a case report.

No other factor plays a more significant role in preventive and interceptive dentistry than the preservation of deciduous dentition till its normal time of exfoliation. Premature loss of a deciduous tooth or a group of teeth might lead to wide range of implications. When the deciduous second molar is lost before the eruption of first permanent molar, intra-alveolar type of space maintainer is indicated. But in cases of bilateral loss of these teeth the conventional design generally poses a variety of problems. Thus, the conventional designs are required to be modified according to the needs of

Change in supporting tissue following loss of a permanent maxillary incisor in children.

Alveolar bone resorption is an inevitable consequence of tooth loss and may be detrimental to long-term dental aesthetics and function. The aim of the present study was to quantify the degree of tissue resorption following the loss of a permanent incisor in a young population. The study group comprised 11 boys and five girls who all required the extraction of a permanent maxillary central incisor due to trauma-related sequelae. Mean age at tooth loss was 10.8 years. Upper alginate impressions were taken at regular intervals following tooth loss and were cast in yellow dental stone. Study model…

[Injuries to the permanent teeth. Periodontal lesions].

Tooth luxations are relatively common. In case of concussion or subluxation the tooth is not displaced. The treatment will consist of relief of the tooth. Most frequent complications are pulp necrosis and obliteration of pulpal tissues. In case of extrusive luxation pulpal tissues and the periodontal ligament are injured. When tooth mobility is increased flexible splinting should be considered. Endodontic treatment is necessary after extrusive luxation of a tooth with completed root formation. Teeth with open apex often show pulpal obliteration after extensive luxation. Lateral luxation is mor
