Dentine hypersensitivity and associations with self-reported oral health and quality of life data in seven European countries.

OBJECTIVES: To examine clinically-assessed dentine hypersensitivity and its associations with self-reported oral health and quality of life data. METHODS: A cross-sectional, observational, epidemiological study in healthy adults in seven European countries was undertaken. Participants underwent a clinical oral examination which assessed dentine hypersensitivity (DH) using an evaporative air stimulus with clinician reported Schiff scale and participant reported binary (yes/no) scores, gingival recession (GR), erosive tooth wear (ETW). Participants also completed a questionnaire on oral health,…

Esthetic and Functional Rehabilitation of Severely Worn Dentition Using Facially Driven Treatment Planning and Digital Workflow.

Three-dimensional (3D) smile design has become a valuable tool for full-mouth rehabilitation, enabling precise treatment planning, enhanced patient communication, and improved case acceptance. It also increases the treatment predictability and reproducibility of the patient-approved design. Advances in in-house computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology and ceramic materials have further streamlined the process and reduced turnaround time while enabling clinicians to overcome limitations commonly associated with traditional pressable ceramics. This case report outl

Effect of facet inclination and location on TMJ loading during bruxism: An in-silico study.

INTRODUCTION: Functional impairment of the masticatory region can have significant consequences that range from a loss of quality of life to severe health issues. Increased temporomandibular joint loading is often connected with temporomandibular disorders, but the effect of morphological factors on joint loading is a heavily discussed topic. Due to the small size and complex structure of the masticatory region in vivo investigations of these connections are difficult to perform. OBJECTIVES: We propose a novel in silico approach for the investigation of the effect of wear facet inclination an

Fish-eaters and farmers: dental pathology in the Arabian Gulf.

Twelve skeletal samples, previously published, from the Arabian Gulf have been used to trace differences in diet and subsistence patterns through an analysis of dental pathology. The skeletons date from 3,000 BC to AD 1,500 and cover a variety of geographical locations: off-shore islands, Eastern Arabia, and Oman. The dental conditions analyzed are attrition, caries, calculus, abscessing, and antemortem tooth loss (AMTL). Results indicate four basic patterns of dental disease which, while not mutually exclusive, correspond to four basic subsistence patterns. Marine dependency, represented by t

Inherited dentin defects with comorbidities.

BACKGROUND: Inherited dentin defects comprise a group of rare genetic conditions that disrupt the normal formation, structure, and function of tooth dentin. Disorders such as dentinogenesis imperfecta and dentin dysplasia often have distinctive dental manifestations, including altered tooth color and translucency, abnormal crown and pulp morphology, foreshortened roots, and increased susceptibility to wear and fracture. The genetic sequence variations underlying selected dentin defects can also contribute to multisystem comorbidities, affecting skeletal, ocular, auditory, or kidney development

Flexibility of feeding movements in pigs: effects of changes in food toughness and stiffness on the timing of jaw movements.

In mammals, chewing movements can be modified, or flexible, in response to changes in food properties. Variability between and within food in the temporal characteristics of chewing movements can impact chewing frequency and rhythmicity, which in turn may affect food breakdown, energy expenditure and tooth wear. Here, we compared total chewing cycle duration and intra-cycle phase durations in pigs chewing on three foods varying in toughness and stiffness: apples (low toughness, low stiffness), carrots (high toughness, low stiffness), and almonds (high toughness, high stiffness). We also determ…

Dental and Mandibular Morphologies of Arboroharamiya (Haramiyida, Mammalia): A Comparison with Other Haramiyidans and Megaconus and Implications for Mammalian Evolution.

BACKGROUND: Two recent studies published in the same issue of Nature reached conflicting conclusions regarding the phylogeny of early mammals: One places the clade containing haramiyidans and multituberculates within the Mammalia and the other separates haramiyidans from multituberculates and places the former outside of the Mammalia. These two contrasting results require that the minimally oldest divergence time of the Mammalia was within the Late Triassic or the Middle Jurassic, respectively. Morphological descriptions of the species named in the two papers were brief, and no comparisons bet

Convergence in morphology and masticatory function between the pharyngeal jaws of grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, and oral jaws of amniote herbivores.

The cellulose-rich walls that protect plant cells are difficult to digest, and therefore mechanical food processing is a key aspect of herbivory across vertebrates. Cell walls are typically broken down by translation of flattened teeth in the occlusal plane (i.e. grinding) as part of a complex, rhythmic chewing stroke. The grass carp, Ctenopharyngodon idella, is a voracious, invasive herbivorous fish that relies solely on its pharyngeal teeth, located in the back of the throat, for mechanical processing of plant material. Here, we describe the musculoskeletal anatomy of the pharyngeal jaws of

Interdisciplinary treatment of cervical lesions.

Soft tissue grafting is an integral part of treatment of cervical lesions due to the common lack of adequate attached gingiva and root exposure associated with these lesions. Complete root coverage is a predictable outcome for Miller Class I and II recession defects, and partial root coverage can be achieved in Miller Class III defects. In the esthetic zone, it is desirable to cover as much of the root as possible, and all sites require an adequate zone of attached gingiva, especially adjacent to a restoration. Restorations are required for cervical lesions with excessive depth and significant

Oral Piercing in the Aspect of Periodontal and Dental Health-A Narrative Review.

Oral piercing is an increasingly popular form of body modification, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Despite its aesthetic and cultural appeal, growing evidence indicates that oral piercings have been associated with a range of oral and periodontal complications. This literature review examines the effects of oral piercing on periodontal tissues and summarizes the associated risk factors and preventive measures. The available evidence demonstrates that tongue and lower lip piercings are most associated with periodontal damage due to chronic mechanical trauma and bacterial plaqu

Does the presence of maxillary central incisor edge asymmetry influence the perception of dentofacial esthetics in video analysis?

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the influence of incisal edge asymmetry of the maxillary central incisors on dentofacial esthetics among orthodontists, prosthodontists, and laypersons using video analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full-face films of a 52-year-old afro-descendant woman displaying various levels of incisal wear in the esthetic zone were captured. An acrylic resin mockup was made of the maxillary anterior region, enabling the reproduction of an attractive smile and restoring tooth wear. Four different levels of incisal asymmetry between the upper central incisors in 0.5 mm increments we…

Temporal changes in the distribution and number of macrophage-lineage cells in the periodontal membrane of the rat molar in response to experimental tooth movement.

In order to evaluate the possible role of macrophages in the remodelling of periodontal tissue in response to tooth movement, temporal changes in the number and distribution of macrophage-lineage cells in the periodontal membrane of the rat molar tooth after experimental tooth movement were examined immunohistochemically using four anti-rat monoclonal antibodies: ED1 (anti-monocyte/macrophage-lineage cells and dendritic cells), ED2 (anti-resident macrophages), KI-M2R (anti-tissue macrophages), and OX6 (anti-class II molecules). The right maxillary first molar tooth of Wistar rats was moved mes

Novel trends, challenges and new perspectives for enamel repair and regeneration to treat dental defects.

Dental enamel is the hardest tissue in the human body, providing external protection for the tooth against masticatory forces, temperature changes and chemical stimuli. Once enamel is damaged/altered by genetic defects, dental caries, trauma, and/or dental wear, it cannot repair itself due to the loss of enamel producing cells following the tooth eruption. The current restorative dental materials are unable to replicate physico-mechanical, esthetic features and crystal structures of the native enamel. Thus, development of alternative approaches to repair and regenerate enamel defects is much n
