The important otolaryngological manifestations of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita (AMC), which heretofore have not been described in otolaryngological and other specialty journals, are reviewed. Thirty-seven patients with AMC were studied. Nine of these patients with neurogenic AMC, had otolaryngological manifestations. Six of these had Pierre Robin-like syndromes. Clinically relevant cartilaginous subglottic stenosis was found in 2 patients with Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) for which tracheotomy was required in one case. Considering the pathogenesis of SDS, including deficient chondrogenesis, we hypothesise that subglottic stenosis may be a rare symptom of SDS. Otorhinolaryngologist and paediatricians should be aware of the risk of airway pathology in patients with SDS.

The often perplexing clinical findings in acute epiglottitis are produced by the relative absence of cyanosis and hypercapnia in the face of severe hypoxemia, since expiration and CO2 elimination are not impaired. A serious situation arises when intubation is unseccessful. We herein present a case involving a 78-year-old patient who had aspirated a laryngotracheal foreign body 3 days prior to hospital admission. The patient had severe congenital intellectual disability; however, no agitation, suffocation, or death occurred despite almost complete laryngeal obstruction. The laryngotracheal foreign body was removed by tracheotomy and suspended microlaryngoscopy.
