Parental Snoring and Environmental Pollutants, but Not Aeroallergen Sensitization, Are Associated with Childhood Snoring in a Birth Cohort.

The objective of this study was to determine whether atopy and other clinical and environmental variables predict the risk of childhood habitual snoring (HS) in a birth cohort born to atopic parents. Participants completed clinical evaluations and questionnaires at ages 1-4 and age 7. HS was defined as snoring ≥3 nights/week. Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) exposure was estimated using land-use regression. The association between early (≤age 4) and current (age 7) allergic disease, environmental exposures, and snoring at age 7 was examined using adjusted logistic regression. Of the 609 ch

Quantile regression to examine the association of air pollution with subclinical atherosclerosis in an adolescent population.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution has been associated with carotid intima-media thickness test (CIMT), a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. To our knowledge, this is the first study to report an association between ambient air pollution and CIMT in a younger adolescent population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the associations beyond standard mean regression by using quantile regression to explore if associations occur at different percentiles of the CIMT distribution. METHODS: We measured CIMT cross-sectionally at the age of 16 years in 363 adolescents participating in the Dutch PIAMA birth cohort.

Evaluation of passive NO2 removal by graphene oxide-polyacrylonitrile electrospun nanofiber membranes at indoor-relevant concentrations.

Traffic-related outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions can infiltrate indoor environments, negatively affecting indoor air quality (IAQ), particularly in buildings near urban roads. In the present exploratory study, the passive performance of graphene oxide (GO)-doped polyacrylonitrile (PAN) electrospun nanofiber filters (GOPAN) for NO2 removal was investigated under controlled conditions representative of indoor exposure to traffic-related pollution. GOPAN nanofibers were fabricated with varying GO concentrations (0.5-3 wt%) to evaluate the effect of the GO loading on passive indoor NO2 rem…

Urban vegetation and particle air pollution: Experimental campaigns in a traffic hotspot.

This work presents the main results of two experimental campaigns carried out in summer and winter seasons in a complex pollution hotspot near a large park, El Retiro, in Madrid (Spain). These campaigns were aimed at understanding the microscale spatio-temporal variation of ambient concentration levels in areas with high pollution values to obtain data to validate models on the effect of urban trees on particulate matter concentrations. Two different measuring approaches have been used. The first one was static, with instruments continuously characterizing the meteorological variables and the

Asthma, Environment and Pollution: Where the Rubber Hits the Road.

The detrimental effects of environmental pollution on one's health are undeniable and have been demonstrated time and time again. Breathing in pollutants in ambient air often has consequences throughout the body, including cardiovascular disease, effects on the reproductive system, and oncologic implications. In the respiratory system, chronic exposure yields a number of outcomes, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma exacerbations, increased rates of hospitalizations, and increased severity of acute illnesses. On a macro-level, this morbidity and mortality then lea

Multivariate statistical analysis of meteorological and air pollution data in the 'Campo de Gibraltar' region, Spain.

A complete statistical analysis of meteorological and air pollution data was carried out in the 'Campo de Gibraltar' region (in the South of Spain) from 1999 to 2002. This is a heavy industrialized area where, up to date, very few air pollution studies have been made. The main objectives of the study presented here have been the characterization of the meteorological and (gaseous and particulate) air pollution conditions in the area, and the relations between them. Multivariate statistical techniques, such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA), have been applied to the data. The results show t

Variability in and agreement between modeled and personal continuously measured black carbon levels using novel smartphone and sensor technologies.

Novel technologies, such as smartphones and small personal continuous air pollution sensors, can now facilitate better personal estimates of air pollution in relation to location. Such information can provide us with a better understanding about whether and how personal exposures relate to residential air pollution estimates, which are normally used in epidemiological studies. The aims of this study were to examine (1) the variability in personal air pollution levels during the day and (2) the relationship between modeled home and school estimates and continuously measured personal air polluti

Outdoor air pollution and anti-Müllerian hormone concentrations in the Sister Study.

BACKGROUND: Anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) concentrations are a marker of ovarian reserve and are indicative of a woman's reproductive lifespan. Exposure to tobacco smoke has been associated with lower AMH concentrations; however, less is known about the association between ambient air pollution and ovarian reserve. METHODS: For 883 premenopausal Sister Study participants recruited between 2003 and 2009 in the United States, adult residential annual average concentrations of PM2.5, PM10, and NO2 were estimated using validated universal kriging models incorporating land-use regression. We estima

Exposure to Traffic-Related Particulate Matter 2.5 Triggers Th2-Dominant Ocular Immune Response in a Murine Model.

Ambient particulate matter (PM), a major component of air pollution, aggravates ocular discomfort and inflammation, similarly to dry eye disease (DED) or allergies. However, the mechanism(s) by which PM induces the ocular inflammatory response is unknown. This study investigated the immunological response of traffic-related fine particulate matter (PM2.5) on the ocular surface in a murine model. C57BL/6 mice were exposed by topical application to PM2.5 or vehicle for 14 days to induce experimental environmental ocular disease. Corneal fluorescein staining and the number of ocular inflammatory

Long-term exposure to fine particulate matter and incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus in a cohort study: effects of total and traffic-specific air pollution.

BACKGROUND: Studies investigating the link between long-term exposure to air pollution and incidence of diabetes are still scarce and results are inconsistent, possibly due to different compositions of the particle mixture. We investigate the long-term effect of traffic-specific and total particulate matter (PM) and road proximity on cumulative incidence of diabetes mellitus (mainly type 2) in a large German cohort. METHODS: We followed prospectively 3607 individuals without diabetes at baseline (2000-2003) from the Heinz Nixdorf Recall Study in Germany (mean follow-up time 5.1 years). Mean a
