Trauma center admission risk conditions and the probability for developing alcohol withdrawal syndrome: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Because the proportion of trauma patients developing alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AWS) is low, AWS risk conditions have not been precisely delineated. We aimed to create multifactor screening strategies to assess probabilities for the likelihood of developing AWS. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 1,011 trauma patients admitted to a Level I trauma center to investigate the associations between AWS and probable AWS risk conditions. Included patients were adults who met trauma registry inclusion criteria and had blood alcohol concentration (BAC) testing performed

Importance of the neutrophil‑to‑lymphocyte ratio as a prognostic factor in patients with spleen trauma: A single center experience.

Abdominal trauma is a common diagnosis for patients admitted to the emergency room. Evaluation of the severity of such patients can sometimes be difficult due to rapid hemodynamic changes caused by the activation of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory regulatory mechanisms. To evaluate the prognosis of trauma patients, it is crucial to identify these changes and adapt various treatment strategies. Using the records of the Mures County Emergency Clinical Hospital, 126 patients were included in the present study with traumatic splenic injury admitted over 6 years. Blood parameters such as the neu

Outcomes of the resuscitative and emergency thoracotomy at a Dutch level-one trauma center: are there predictive factors for survival?

PURPOSE: To investigate the 30-day survival rate of resuscitative and emergency thoracotomies in trauma patients. Moreover, factors that positively influence 30-day survival rates were investigated. METHODS: A retrospective study of patients (> 16 years), between 2008 and 2020, who underwent a resuscitative or emergency thoracotomy at a level-one trauma center in the Netherlands was conducted. RESULTS: Fifty-six patients underwent a resuscitative (n = 45, 80%) or emergency (n = 11, 20%) thoracotomy. The overall 30-day survival rate was 32% (n = 18), which was 23% after blunt trauma and 72% a

Efficacy of Cefazolin versus Ceftriaxone for Extremity Open Fracture Management at a Level 1 Trauma Center.

Background: Antibiotic agents have been shown to improve outcomes in open extremity fractures. The first-generation cephalosporins, which are used most often, are often under-dosed based on weight and recommended frequency. Ceftriaxone offers a broader coverage and a decreased frequency of administration. Our institution began utilizing ceftriaxone for open fracture management in 2017 to address those concerns. Objective: To examine the efficacy of cefazolin versus ceftriaxone for open fracture management of extremity trauma. Patients and Methods: Retrospective study from 2015-2019 of patients

The Epidemiology of Necrotizing Fasciitis at a Rural Level 1 Trauma Center During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on non-COVID-19 pathologies has been experienced worldwide. While people appropriately avoided social interactions, many also avoided essential medical care for acute and chronic conditions. This delay in seeking care has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality in several conditions, including life-threatening infections such as necrotizing fasciitis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients that presented to the University of Vermont Medical Center for necrotizing fasciitis during the 1-year period following

Frontal Sinus Fractures: 10-Year Contemporary Experience at a Level 1 Urban Trauma Center.

Frontal sinus fractures account for 5% to 15% of all facial fractures, and have traditionally been associated with high kinetic energy blunt injury. Surgical management is largely focused on minimizing potentially serious sequelae including frontal sinus dysfunction, CSF leak, and significant cosmetic deformity. An institutional database of 1944 patients presenting with maxillofacial fractures over a 10-year period was queried. Demographics, mechanism of injury, yearly trends, surgical approaches, and follow-up data were examined. A total of 160 (8.3%) patients presented with at least 1 fractu

Risk factors for avoidable transfer to a pediatric trauma center among patients 2 years and older.

BACKGROUND: Effective and sustainable pediatric trauma care requires systems of regionalization and interfacility transfer. Avoidable transfer, also known as secondary overtriage, occurs when a patient is transferred to a regional trauma center after initial evaluation at another facility that is capable of providing definitive care. The purpose of this study was to identify risk factors for avoidable transfer among pediatric trauma patients in southwest Florida. METHODS: All pediatric trauma patients 2 years and older transferred from outlying hospitals to the emergency department of a singl
