INTRODUCTION: Newer coexisting conditions should be identified in order to modify newer risk factors. Aim was to identify patients with non-classical or less common coexisting conditions in patients infected of COVID 19.
METHOD: Single centred study from June 2020 to May 2021 at a tertiary centre in North India. A preformed questionnaire was used to record clinical and laboratory parameters and to identify cases which are in addition to CDC list and Indian data.
RESULTS: 0.67% (46) cases out of 6832 patients were identified to have non-classical coexisting illness. It was divided into 2 grou

INTRODUCTION: Disseminated tuberculosis, i.e., tuberculosis involving lung, liver, spleen, bone marrow and lymph nodes is rare (2.8%), particularly when immunocompromised diathesis is lacking.
EXEGESIS: We report three cases of disseminated tuberculosis confirmed by bacteriology or histology, which occurred in non-immunocompromised patients. Disease evolution under antituberculous treatment was favorable in two cases and fatal in the third one.
CONCLUSION: Disseminated tuberculosis must be suspected when miliary pulmonary lesions are associated with hematologic abnormalities, even in non-imm

A case of granulomatous hepatitis due to Nocardia is reported here. The case patient was a 63-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with persistent fever, weight loss, and malaise. Radiology suggested an enlarged liver with dense diffuse to multiple tiny micronodular areas of parenchymal involvement, possibly granulomatous. Liver biopsy showed necrotizing granulomas and anti-tuberculosis therapy was initiated, but the patient showed no improvement. A repeat liver biopsy showed similar histopathology; however PCR for Mycobacterium tuberculosis was negative, while MGIT 960 culture grew fila

Circulating immune complexes are thought to play an essential part in the pathogenesis of necrosing angiitis. This theory also allows a role to be attributed to certain infectious agents (viral, bacterial, parasitic) in the development of periarteritis nodosa (PAN). An infectious syndrome was found in all our 9 patients, aged 26 to 69 years, with histologically confirmed PAN: previous infection (over 15 days before hospital admission): otitis, hepatitis B, tonsillitis, ascaris (Case n.7), pulmonary tuberculosis, brucellosis, seropositivity for Chlamydia trachomatis (Case n.9), paratyphoid (Cas

BACKGROUND: Extra-pulmonary tuberculosis is associated with a higher risk of drug-induced liver injury (DILI) with antituberculosis treatment (ATT). Nevertheless, hepatic dysfunctions in some patients can also regress to normalization due to hepatic adaptation (HA). Prospective data specifically addressing these issues in patients with abdominal tuberculosis (ATB) is lacking. This study was aimed to evaluate the patterns of hepatic injury, HA, and their predictors in patients with ATB receiving ATT.
METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study involving 140 patients with ATB and normal baseli

Multi-organ involvement by opportunistic infections and neoplasms is the major cause of morbidity and mortality in people living with HIV/AIDS. We determined the spectrum/frequency of hepatic histopathological lesions in a prospective study of postmortem liver biopsies from 100 patients (50 females and 50 males, age range 18-55 years) who died from HIV/AIDS in Jos university teaching hospital, Nigeria. The majority of the patients, 65 (65%), had clinical tuberculosis. Granulomatous hepatitis, chronic hepatitis, non-specific reactive hepatitis (NSRH) and steatosis were the commonest hepatic his

After her holiday in South Africa, a 50-year-old woman was admitted because of fever and pain in the upper abdomen. The laboratory tests showed moderately increased serum liver enzyme activities. The liver biopsy showed a granulomatous hepatitis. Further investigations revealed no evidence for sarcoidosis, tuberculosis or infectious hepatitis, nor for other granulomatous diseases or infectious diseases relevant to South Africa. Upon discontinuation of the malaria prophylaxis with Daraclor (pyrimethamine and chloroquine (sulphate)) the symptoms disappeared and the liver function tests returned

Effective screening in primary care among asylum-seekers in the US is critical as this population grows. This study aimed to evaluate disease prevalence and screening methods in this high-risk group. Two hundred ten new clients from 51 countries, plus Tibet, who were accepted into a program for asylum seekers from 2012 to 2014 were included. Screening rates and outcomes for infectious, non-communicable, and mental illnesses were evaluated. Screening rates were highest for PTSD, depression, hepatitis B, and latent tuberculosis. Seventy-one percent of clients screened positive for depression and

OBJECTIVE: To provide methods and alert thresholds which are scientific, sensitive, specific and practical for Early Warning System in Public Health Surveillance.
METHODS: Alert data was based on historical infectious diseases reports. Control chart was used to detect outbreaks or epidemics. An epidemic was defined by consulting Specialists. After calculating sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value and describing receiver-operating characteristic curve (ROC), the optimal model and thresholds were chosen.
RESULTS: At 80 percentile, the sensitivities and the specificities of epidem

Although subclinical liver disease is common in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), strikingly high levels of liver enzymes are rare. Our aim was to determine the cause of high levels of liver enzymes in lupus patients, particularly in patients diagnosed with toxic hepatitis. We performed a retrospective chart review of SLE patients treated at the Inje University Hospital between 2001 and 2008. We defined liver enzyme abnormality as a twofold or greater increase in two or more of the following four components: total bilirubin, AST, ALT and LDH or ALP. Acute toxic hepatitis was diagnosed by a s

The occupational risk of infection in forensic workers is a cause for concern, furthermore in the current context of the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) pandemic. In order to characterize this risk, we performed an extended review of the literature on occupational infections occurring in forensic workers. Seventeen articles were included. Direct contamination by aerosolization was the main mode of transmission reported, with 17 cases of tuberculosis. Indirect contamination was described as the mode of transmission in 10 cases (five cases of blastomycosis, two cases of tuberculosis, two Strep

Ethionamide (ETH), a second-line drug for multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, is known to cause hepatic steatosis in rats and humans. To investigate predictive biomarkers for ETH-induced steatosis, we performed lipidomics analysis using plasma and liver samples collected from rats treated orally with ETH at 30 and 100 mg/kg for 14 days. The ETH-treated rats developed hepatic steatosis with Oil Red O staining-positive vacuolation in the centrilobular hepatocytes accompanied by increased hepatic contents of triglycerides (TG) and decreased plasma TG and total cholesterol levels. A multivariate ana

Hepatic hydrothorax is a pleural effusion (typically ≥500 mL) that develops in patients with cirrhosis and/or portal hypertension in the absence of other causes. In most cases, hepatic hydrothorax is seen in patients with ascites. However, ascites is not always found at diagnosis and is not clinically detected in 20% of patients with hepatic hydrothorax. Some patients have no symptoms and incidental findings on radiologic examination lead to the diagnosis of the condition. In the majority of cases, the patients present with symptoms such as dyspnea at rest, cough, nausea, and pleuritic chest p

Disseminated tuberculosis (TB) is an important opportunistic infection in patients with Crohn's disease receiving immunosuppressive therapy, where its manifestations may mimic inflammatory or infectious Crohn's complications. Case: We describe a 40-year-old man with Crohn's disease on azathioprine who presented with a recurrent perianal abscess unresponsive to antibiotics. CT revealed multiple hepatic and splenic micronodules with mild rim enhancement, in addition to randomly distributed pulmonary micronodules and small nodules, raising suspicion for disseminated TB. CT-guided aspiration of th

Three groups of the parameters of the therapeutic effects of 3 and 4 antituberculous drugs on renal tuberculous inflammation were identified. The primary effect of 4 drugs was much frequently manifested itself by the normalization of urinalysis and the transfer of cultured to uncultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MBT). The equivalent effect of 3 and 4 drugs was characterized by the similar rate of continuation of specific mycobacteriuria, by the detection of MBT in the cavernous contents from the removed tuberculosis-afflicted kidney and by the equivalent morphological characteristics of tube
