BACKGROUND: It is estimated that 10 to 15 million people are infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis in the United States. Spinal involvement is said to occur in less than 1%.
METHODS: A review of the clinic records of all patients having a diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis at the New Jersey Medical School National Tuberculosis Center from January 1994 to January 1999 was done.
RESULTS: Twelve patients with spinal TB were identified (2.2%). Spinal tuberculosis is characteristically chronic and slowly progressive. Presenting symptoms are usually back and neck pain or pain at the site of invol

Considering that currently Romania has the highest tuberculosis incidence in Europe, the recognition of the infection is an acknowledged health issue. Central nervous system tuberculosis accounts for approximately 1% of all cases of tuberculosis. Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis is a contiguous infl ammatory lesion of the spinal cord which involves three or more spinal segments. In tuberculosis, spinal cord involvement is rare and is usually rather due to radiculomyelitis or spinal tuberculoma, and only very rare due to longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis. We present the c…

Tuberculosis is a deadly disease affecting many people in the world. The prevalence of spinal tuberculosis is likely to rise as the numbers of those infected with human immunodeficiency virus rises. This presentation summarizes present knowledge of spinal tuberculosis and its management. It describes and updates material the author has previously published on this subject. The scientific basis for the clinical management of spinal tuberculosis has been well established by the British Medical Research Council group and Hong Kong surgeons. It is believed, however, that well-controlled basic and

This study was conducted to determine the factors involved in predicting the onset of paraplegia in tuberculosis of the spine. A cross-sectional, case control review of 85 cases of spinal tuberculosis was conducted at the National Tuberculosis Centre in Kuala Lumpur. Sixty-nine of these cases were normal neurologically, whilst 16 cases experienced neural deficit. The data was analysed using backward logistic regression and Fishers exact probability test. The factors studied included symptoms and signs of spinal tuberculosis, common investigations for tuberculosis, and physical factors of the d

Spinal tuberculosis accounts for nearly half of all cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. It is primarily a medical disease and treatment consists of a multidrug regimen for 9-12 months. Surgery is reserved for select cases of progressive deformity or where neurological deficit is not improved by anti-tubercular treatment. Technology refinements and improved surgical expertise have improved the operative treatment of spinal tuberculosis. The infected spine can be approached anteriorly or posteriorly, in a minimally invasive way. We review the various surgical techniques used in the management

Tuberculosis of the spine usually occurs with a latency period after primary infection with tuberculosis (TB) and the most frequent agent is Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The rate of TB has increased due to the impact of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) and more than 50% of skeletal tuberculosis is localized in the spine. Spinal tuberculosis was discovered by Pott in 1776. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with gadolineum is the most sensitive imaging method. Diagnostic accuracy is given by direct detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by punction or biopsy. Granuloma of the spine can l

BACKGROUND: Bone grafting is necessary in spinal tuberculosis surgery. Structural bone grafting is considered the gold standard treatment for spinal tuberculosis bone defects; however, nonstructural bone grafting via the posterior approach has recently gained attention. In this meta-analysis, we evaluated the clinical efficacy of structural versus nonstructural bone grafting via the posterior approach in the treatment of thoracic and lumbar tuberculosis.
METHODS: Studies comparing the clinical efficacy of structural and nonstructural bone grafting via the posterior approach in spinal tubercul

Tuberculosis is a major public health problem in the world. Spinal tuberculosis (Pott disease) is a frequently encountered extrapulmonary form of the disease. Cervical spinal tuberculosis is relatively rare. We report the case of a 66-year-old patient admitted for cervical Pott's disease managed surgically and the positive outcome. A patient with a history of pulmonary tuberculosis present 3 months ago persistent neck pain with tingling and heaviness in both upper limbs. The neurological examination was normal without any sensory or motor deficit. Spinal cord magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) s

AIM: To describe a rare case of spondyloptosis caused by spinal tuberculosis in the upper thoracic region.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 22-year-old female patient suddenly fell down because of lower extremity weakness. Spondyloptosis was observed, which developed following melting of the spine caused by tuberculosis. Successful reduction, spinal alignment, and stabilization of the spine were achieved following instrumentation with a long-segment screw and rod in a single-stage surgery.
CONCLUSION: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of spondyloptosis secondary to tuberculosis. This

INTRODUCTION: Spinal tuberculosis (TB) accounts for approximately half of all cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. Kyphosis is the rule in spinal tuberculosis and has potential detrimental effects on both the spinal cord and pulmonary function. Late-onset paraplegia is best avoided with the surgical correction of severe kyphosis, where at the same time anterior decompression of the cord is performed and the remnants of the tuberculosis-destroyed vertebral bodies are excised.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Review of the literature on late surgical treatment of TB-associated kyphosis; description and

OBJECTIVE AND BACKGROUND: Early and accurate diagnosis of spinal infections, including spinal tuberculosis, is pivotal for effective treatment but remains challenging. This study aims to assess the diagnostic yield of metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) compared with that of conventional microbiological tests (CMTs) in identifying pathogens associated with spinal pathologies, with a special focus on infections leading to surgical interventions.
METHODS: We enrolled 85 patients who underwent spinal surgery, comprising 63 patients with clinically diagnosed spinal infections, including

The paper deals with the study of central and peripheral hemodynamic features in patients with multiorgan tuberculosis. The study is based on the analysis of examination findings and treatment outcomes in 42 patients with concurrent tuberculosis of the lung and vertebral column. A control group consisted of 46 patents with spinal tuberculosis. The authors provide evidence that concurrent pulmonary and spinal tuberculosis substantially makes basic central and peripheral hemodynamic parameters worse in patients with tuberculosis spondylosis, aggravates their general condition, requires cardiotro

Acute transverse myelitis is an inflammatory disorder of the spinal cord, characterized by acute or subacute onset of paraparesis, bilateral sensory deficit, and impaired urinary bladder and sphincter tone function. Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a very rare cause of transverse myelitis, especially tuberculous myelitis without meningitis, is extremely rare. The main etiologic mechanism consists of an abnormal activation of the immune system against the spinal cord as well as the direct invasion by the bacillus. We present a 30-year-old Thai woman with AIDS, presenting with paraplegia for two days

Spinal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare form of extrapulmonary TB that can be clinically difficult to diagnose, particularly in pregnancy. This 24-year-old G2, P0 patient was diagnosed at 19 weeks gestation, 2 days after a protracted admission for hyperemesis gravidarum, COVID-19 infection, and unexplained transaminitis with bilateral lower limb weakness and urinary retention. She underwent emergent spinal decompression surgery with expectant management on intravenous antitubercular medication and cesarean delivery at 343 weeks gestation. Spinal tuberculosis is a difficult diagnosis, impacted by me

Study Design Case report. Objective To analyze the surgical difficulties in restoring global spinal stability and to describe an effective surgical option for tuberculosis with extensive destruction of the lumbosacral spine. Advanced tuberculosis with destruction of the lumbosacral spine can result in a kyphosis or hypolordosis, leading to back pain, spinal instability, and neurological deficits. The conventional treatment goals of lumbosacral tuberculosis are to correct and prevent a lumbar kyphosis, treat or prevent a neurological deficit, and restore global spinal stability.
