Childhood Maltreatment and Anxiety in Adulthood: Disentangling the Role of Personality Functioning.

Childhood maltreatment (CM), particularly emotional neglect and abuse, has been associated with an increased risk of anxiety and less favorable psychotherapy outcomes in adulthood. Impairments in personality functioning are a significant mechanism mediating this relation. This naturalistic cross-sectional study examined the mediating role of personality functioning in the relation between CM and anxiety symptoms in a clinical adult sample. A total of 335 adult patients starting individual psychotherapy completed intake self-report questionnaires about CM experiences, personality functioning, a

Does personality play a role in continuous positive airway pressure compliance?

KEY POINTS: Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) adherence is low among individuals with obstructive sleep apnoea.Type D personality and high scores on the depression and hypochondriasis scales on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) have been identified as factors contributing to non-compliance with CPAP.Further research into personality type may assist in understanding why some people adhere to CPAP, while others fail. UNLABELLED: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a condition characterised by repetitive, intermittent partial or complete collapse/obstruction of the up

Internet Gaming Disorder Clustering Based on Personality Traits in Adolescents, and Its Relation with Comorbid Psychological Symptoms.

In recent years, the evidence regarding Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) suggests that some personality traits are important risk factors for developing this problem. The heterogeneity involved in problematic online gaming and differences found in the literature regarding the comorbid psychopathology associated with the problem could be explained through different types of gamers. Clustering analysis can allow organization of a collection of personality traits into clusters based on similarity. The objectives of this study were: (1) to obtain an empirical classification of IGD patients according

Inverse association between sense of humor and coronary heart disease.

Prospective studies have suggested that antisocial Type A personality traits may be associated with an increased incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD). However, few data have addressed whether more favorable personality characteristics may be inversely correlated with CHD. Therefore, two standardized questionnaires designed to either assess anger and hostility or to measure the propensity to laugh under a variety of situations encountered in everyday life, were administered to 300 consecutive subjects. Compared to controls, CHD subjects were significantly less likely to experience laughter…

Alcohol and drug abusers subtyped by antisocial personality and primary or secondary depressive disorder.

Our data show that when substance abusers are subtyped simultaneously by antisocial personality disorder and the onset of depression relative to alcohol or drug abuse, groups of people with unique personality and affective profiles are identified. The profiles are represented by measures of affect-related personality variables such as trait anxiety, trait depression, histrionic traits, sensation seeking, and novelty seeking. These measures were chosen in an attempt to show that a "low arousal" personality type may be associated with antisocial personality and may thus indirectly be linked to a

Enhancing Diabetes Management Through Personality Assessment: A Pilot Study.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the utility of therapeutic assessment (therapeutic assessment) as a brief intervention to target reduction in A1C levels and to assess the levels of personality functioning and broad trait domains described in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in a sample of patients with Type 2 diabetes and their relationship to A1C levels at baseline and follow-up. Relationship between neurosis and personality disorder.

316 psychiatric patients--predominantly out-patients--with a clinical diagnosis of neurosis (International Classification of Disease), were given an interview schedule for assessing personality disorders. Nearly two fifths were rated as having personality disorder, the anankastic type being the most common and sociopathic personality disorder the least. Patients with anxiety, phobic and obsessional neurosis were all significantly more likely to show personality disorder than those with depressive neurosis. Broadly, passive-dependent personalities were linked to anxiety neurosis, anankastic per

The overlap of depressive personality disorder and dysthymia, reconsidered.

This paper reviews empirical literature examining the diagnostic overlap of depressive personality disorder and dysthymia. Although some articles have suggested that depressive personality disorder lacks distinctiveness from dysthymia and may be one type of affective disorder, a large proportion of the literature may, in fact, support its distinctiveness as a personality disorder. Additional research is needed to determine the features of the two disorders that best distinguish between them, so that depressive personality disorder can be further evaluated for its validity and usefulness in the

A preliminary report on defenses and conflicts associated with borderline personality disorder.

The authors present preliminary psychodynamic findings from a naturalistic study of borderline personality disorder compared to antisocial personality disorder and bipolar type II (depression with hypomania) affective disorder. An independent psychodynamic interview of each subject was videotaped from which ratings were made of the presence of 22 defense mechanisms and 11 psychodynamic conflicts. A factor analysis of ratings from 81 subjects supported the separation of borderline (splitting, projective identification) from narcissistic defenses (devaluation, omnipotence, idealization, mood-inc

[Are eating disorders addictions?].

The various eating disorders, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge-eating disorder, are characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior and are seen as typical "psychosomatic disorders". The subdivision of anorexia nervosa into two subtypes, namely "anorexia nervosa restricting type" and "anorexia nervosa bulimic type" has proved to be very good. It is to be assumed that eating disorders are not a homogeneous group, and that the various subtypes of eating disorders are also heterogeneous at several levels. Co-morbid psychiatric disorders, especially affective disorders, anxiety

Circadian typology, age, and the alternative five-factor personality model in an adult women sample.

Research on personality and circadian typology indicates evening-type women are more impulsive and novelty seeking, neither types are more anxious, and morning types tend to be more active, conscientious, and persistent. The purpose of this study is to examine the differences between circadian typologies in the light of the Zuckerman's Alternative Five-Factor Model (AFFM) of personality, which has a strong biological basis, in an adult sample of 412 women 18 to 55 yrs of age. The authors found morning-type women had significant higher scores than evening-type and neither-type women on Activity

Personality traits, cardiac risk factors, and their association with presence and severity of coronary artery plaque in people with no history of cardiovascular disease.

[Role of personality in eating behavior disorders].

Personality disorders are common in eating disorders and preliminary reports indicate that this type of disorders implicate a poor prognosis in anorexia and bulimia nervosa. Cluster C personality disorders, particularly avoidant and dependent personality disorder are the most frequent in anorexia nervosa. In bulimia nervosa, however, cluster B personality disorders, including borderline and histrionic personality disorders, are more frequent. Furthermore, temperament could differentiate anorectic patients from bulimic patients. Eating disorders seem to be associated with high scores in neuroti

Cluster A personality disorders: considering the 'odd-eccentric' in psychiatric nursing.

Psychiatric nurses are familiar with the concept of personality disorder because of their contact with persons with the most common personality disorder in clinical settings - borderline type, who frequently engage mental health services. Perhaps it is this familiarity that has focused research and clinical attention on borderline personality disorder compared with the other personality disorders. The significance of cluster A personality disorders for nursing is multifaceted because of their severity, prevalence, inaccurate diagnosis, poor response to treatment, and similarities to axis I dia

Hostile personality and risks of peripheral arterial disease in the general population.

The relationships between personality and risks of coronary heart disease have been studied widely, but little attention has been paid to ot … disease in subjects who had neither intermittent claudication nor angina. Contrary to expectations, Type A personality behaviour scores decreased with the severity of peripheral arterial disease. We conclude that hostile personality may be an independent risk factor for chronic peripheral arterial disease in the general population, particularly among men.
