High frequency ultrasound was used to produce chorioretinal lesions in two groups of pigmented rabbits. The control group received no medications. The other group was treated with subretinotoxic doses of chloroquine. Our experiment showed that the untreated group developed focal chorioretinal lesions and ricochet lesions at lower energies than did the chloroquinated group. We postulated that chloroquine, a melanin binding drug, altered melanin's ability to process ultrasonic energy by sonic-thermal conversion. The combination of fetal ascites and polyhydramnios is an uncommon problem that can be detected in utero by sonography. A case is reported where the etiology was found to be generalized cytomegalovirus infection. The differential diagnosis, etiology and diagnostic procedures are discussed. A thorough sonographic study is essential in the diagnosis and evaluation of fetal ascites in utero.

The results are reported from application of ultrasound diagnostics (echography) of 400 patients with renal diseases. The diagnoses were confirmed by venous urography, isotope nephrography, scintigraphy and punch renal biopsy. Perforation of the gallbladder is a life-threatening complication of acute cholecystitis that is often difficult to diagnose at an early stage. Standard radiographic and laboratory tests have not been reliable in identifying patients with this complication. Hydatid disease is common in Kenya. Established diagnostic methods are not entirely satisfactory and this study was undertaken to show the value of ultrasound in the diagnosis of abdominal hydatid disease. The sizes, numbers and sites of hydatid cysts have been shown in 16 patients. In view of its accuracy, lack of radiation hazard and relative cheapness, ultrasound is recommended as the method of choice for the investigation of abdominal hydatid disease.

This paper reports SP changes pre- and post-operatively in a series of 12 patients who have undergone ultrasonic labyrinthectomy for Menière's disorder. The unoperated ear in 7 of these patients also had pre- and post- operative ECochG. The SP in the operated ear was reduced in amplitude and duration in 50 per cent and 66 per cent of ears respectively. However, the SP was also reduced in the unoperated ears by similar proportions. In a retrospective study to correlate preoperative ultrasonic findings with operative findings in 80 patients with symptoms of biliary tract disease, ultrasound was 75% accurate in predicting the presence or absence of gallstones. Ultrasonic scanning in patients with symptoms of threatened abortion occasionally revealed an echo-free area between the membranes and the uterine wall. The echo-free area was found in patients at 11 to 20 weeks gestation who had a live fetus and is believed to represent blood. Seven smaller haematomas of less than 35 ml gradually disappeared and the pregnancies continued until term. Three patients who had haematomas of more than 50 ml subsequently aborted or had a premature delivery.

Sonography today has essentially influenced the diagnostical and therapeutical procedure in urology. Concerning ordinary methods of examination, sonography is not only a superior one, but can give further information. We surely shall get more indications in future. As a method of examination - non-invasive, without danger, always repeatable and sensitive, - sonography fulfills in many cases the qualifications which have to be made to the screening method.
