Design and evaluation of nonverbal sound-based input for those with motor handicapped.

Most personal computing interfaces rely on the users' ability to use their hand and arm movements to interact with on-screen graphical widgets via mainstream devices, including keyboards and mice. Without proper assistive devices, this style of input poses difficulties for motor-handicapped users. We propose a sound-based input scheme enabling users to operate Windows' Graphical User Interface by producing hums and fricatives through regular microphones. Hierarchically arranged menus are utilized so that only minimal numbers of different actions are required at a time. The proposed scheme was

Empowering Vulnerable Patients at Home: A User-Centered Platform for Natural Language-Driven Integration of Home and Clinical Health Data.

As care for old adults increasingly shifts to the home, integrating everyday health data into clinical practice remains a major challenge. Current solutions based on passive sensors or wearable data often lack contextual understanding, leaving clinicians disconnected from the lived experience at home. To address this gap, we propose a user-centered, natural language-based, asynchronous platform enabling patients to communicate relevant health events and contextual insights in their own words. Developed through a participatory design process, our web-based prototype integrates a large language

3D hand motion trajectory prediction from EEG mu and beta bandpower.

A motion trajectory prediction (MTP) - based brain-computer interface (BCI) aims to reconstruct the three-dimensional (3D) trajectory of upper limb movement using electroencephalography (EEG). The most common MTP BCI employs a time series of bandpass-filtered EEG potentials (referred to here as the potential time-series, PTS, model) for reconstructing the trajectory of a 3D limb movement using multiple linear regression. These studies report the best accuracy when a 0.5-2Hz bandpass filter is applied to the EEG. In the present study, we show that spatiotemporal power distribution of theta (4-8

Virtual airways heatmaps to optimize point of entry location in lung biopsy planning systems.

PURPOSE: We present a virtual model to optimize point of entry (POE) in lung biopsy planning systems. Our model allows to compute the quality of a biopsy sample taken from potential POE, taking into account the margin of error that arises from discrepancies between the orientation in the planning simulation and the actual orientation during the operation. Additionally, the study examines the impact of the characteristics of the lesion. METHODS: The quality of the biopsy is given by a heatmap projected onto the skeleton of a patient-specific model of airways. The skeleton provides a 3D represe

Modeling the Intent to Interact With VR Using Physiological Features.

OBJECTIVE: Mixed-Reality (XR) technologies promise a user experience (UX) that rivals the interactive experience with the real-world. The key facilitators in the design of such a natural UX are that the interaction has zero lag and that users experience no excess mental load. This is difficult to achieve due to technical constraints such as motion-to-photon latency as well as false-positives during gesture-based interaction. METHODS: In this paper, we explored the use of physiological features to model the user's intent to interact with a virtual reality (VR) environment. Accurate predictions

Learning in a virtual environment using haptic systems for movement re-education: can this medium be used for remodeling other behaviors and actions?

Robotic systems that are interfaced with virtual reality gaming and task simulations are increasingly being developed to provide repetitive intensive practice to promote increased compliance and facilitate better outcomes in rehabilitation post-stroke. A major development in the use of virtual environments (VEs) has been to incorporate tactile information and interaction forces into what was previously an essentially visual experience. Robots of varying complexity are being interfaced with more traditional virtual presentations to provide haptic feedback that enriches the sensory experience an

Effects of image scale and system time delay on simulator sickness within head-coupled virtual environments.

Novel patterns of visual-vestibular intersensory stimulation often result in symptoms of simulator sickness, raising health and safety concerns regarding virtual environment exposure. Two experiments investigated the effect of conflicting visual-vestibular cues on subjective reports of simulator sickness during and after a 50-min exposure to a head-coupled virtual interface. Virtual image scale factors (0.5. 1.0, 2.0 magnification, generated by varying geometric field of view angle) were investigated in Experiment 1, and additional system time delays (125, 250 ms) were investigated in Experime

Characterizing Human Visual Performance in Dim Industrial Environments: An Eye-Tracking Sensor-Based Study on Mine Monitoring Interface Layouts.

In underground mining operations, intelligent electronic monitoring and control systems have gradually become essential tools for practitioners to obtain operational information. Because underground mines are characterized by low-light environments that differ substantially from above-ground natural lighting, screen-related factors can strongly affect visual search tasks. It is therefore important to examine how interface layout influences visual search efficiency under low-illuminance mining conditions. This study utilized eye-tracking sensing technology to evaluate user performance within a

Enhancing User Experience in Virtual Reality Through Optical Flow Simplification with the Help of Physiological Measurements: Pilot Study.

The use of virtual reality (VR) has made significant advancements, and now it is widely used across a range of applications. However, consumers' capacity to fully enjoy VR experiences continues to be limited by a chronic problem known as cybersickness (CS). This study explores the feasibility of mitigating CS through geometric scene simplification combined with electroencephalography (EEG)-based monitoring. According to the sensory conflict theory, this issue is caused by the discrepancy between the visually induced self-motion (VIMS) through immersive displays and the real motion the vestibul

Control strategies for high degree-of-freedom assistive devices using non-invasive body-machine interfaces: a survey and framework.

PURPOSE: Body-machine interfaces (BoMIs) provide individuals with movement impairments the ability to control assistive devices using signals from their body movements in a non-invasive and reliable way. However, high degree-of-freedom (DOF) assistive devices such as robotic manipulators require the user to control several device commands simultaneously and intuitively, which has resulted in limited adoption of these devices by the intended user population. In this review, we survey recent approaches for controlling high-DOF systems. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on a systematic literature sea

Context Informed Incremental Learning Improves Myoelectric Control Performance in Virtual Reality Object Manipulation Tasks.

Electromyography (EMG)-based gesture recognition is a promising approach for designing intuitive human-computer interfaces. However, while these systems typically perform well in controlled laboratory settings, their usability in real-world applications is compromised by declining performance during real-time control. This decline is largely due to goal-directed behaviors that are not captured in static, offline scenarios. To address this issue, we use Context Informed Incremental Learning (CIIL) - marking its first deployment in an object-manipulation scenario - to continuously adapt the clas
