We studied the effect of uveal pigmentation on contact Nd:YAG transscleral cyclophotocoagulation in 36 human autopsy and eight cynomolgus monkey eyes. Ten autopsy eyes from black individuals required less energy to create a lesion than 23 eyes from whites. Thirty-two eyes with uveal neovascularization at the ora serrata and pars plana were studied histopathologically. Chronic retinal detachment of various etiologies was the most frequently associated feature, present in 65% of the patients. Ornithine ketoacid aminotransferase in bovine ocular tissues was studied biochemically. The retinal pigment epithelium, ciliary body, iris, and neuroretina showed high specific activity. The cornea and choroid revealed a lower activity. Aqueous humor, lens, vitreous body, and sclera showed no activity. The pH optima of the enzyme in the retinal pigment epithelium and ciliary body were near 8.0.
