[Peripheral uveitis caused by Toxocara larvae].

The authors present an eight year old girl suffering from peripheral uveitis caused by Toxocara sp. larva migration. Chronic uveitis was already present when the girl went to the Ophthalmology Outpatient Clinic because of lack of sight in her right eye. Carefully taken past medical history, especially epidemiological, as well as history of recent complaints (fever, general infectious syndrome), pointed to the possible toxocariasis. A specialist for infectious diseases was consulted, tests made and diagnosis has been established by positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test (ELISA)--the ab…

[Syphilitic uveitis. Apropos of 2 cases].

Report of two cases of syphilitic uveitis which presented vasculitis, papillitis, cystoid macular edema and large disturbance of the pigment epithelium. The superior value of the FTA-Abs test and of the cerebrospinal fluid analysis in the diagnosis of the disease is discussed. Treatment with high doses of Penicillin G for 10 to 15 days is recommended.

Uveitis in childhood--Part III. Posterior.

Toxoplasma, nematodes, and cytomegalovirus are the most common causes of uveitis in children involving the posterior pole. Discussion of treatment and management is detailed. Rubella retinitis and subacute sclerosing panencephalitis are specific entities which are limited in their initial presentation in children. Panuveitis including sympathetic ophthalmia, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada, and Behçet's syndromes, while relatively rare in their occurrence, demand early treatment intervention. Specific antimicrobial therapy and adrenocorticosteroids as well as therapeutic suggestions are also included. Th…

Uveitis associated with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Chronic nongranulomatous uveitis associated with JRA, a distinctive clinical entity occurring almost exclusively in the pediatric age group, represents an important cause of visual impairment in children. Despite continuing clarification of the clinical manifestations of this disorder, the etiology of uveitis associated with JRA remains unknown and the pathophysiology is still poorly understood. Further study of uveitis-associated JRA, by the application of improved immunologic theories and techniques, should aid in developing more effective therapeutic and preventive strategies.

Uveitis complicating autoimmune chronic active hepatitis.

A patient with autoimmune hepatitis B surface antigen-negative chronic active hepatitis (CAH) developed uveitis during the course of her disease. The occurrence of this eye disorder provides additional support for an autoimmune pathogenesis for CAH. Clinicians should be alert to the association of uveitis with CAH, so that patients at risk may be examined for this potentially serious ocular disease.

Altered suppressor-cell activities in uveitis.

Suppressor-cell function was evaluated by two in-vitro assay systems in forty patients with intraocular inflammatory disease (uveitis) and in sixteen healthy age-matched controls. A concanavalin-A (Con A)-induced suppressor-cell assay showed that patients with posterior uveitic conditions had greater suppressor activity than did the anterior uveitic group or the control group (p < 0.005); but an assay for non-induced suppressor-cell activity showed that the posterior uveitic group had less suppressor activity (p < 0.001). These findings suggest (a) that at least two cell types may be involved …

[Aetiological aspects of uveitis (author's transl)].

An analysis of the probable aetiology of 222 cases of uveitis. In order of frequency the aetiology was: infectious focis 31%, rheumatism 28%, tuberculosis 7.6%, streptococci 4%, viral 3.6%, rickettsia 1.3%, syphilis, brucellosis in 0.5%. In 22.1% of cases the aetiology was not established. In young subjects the majority consisted of bacterial and viral infections particularly streptococcal. In adults the most frequent aetiology was rheumatic and in the elderly foci of infection.

Experimental uveitis induced by prostatic antigens.

Experimental uveitis was induced in male rats following their repeated systemic and intravitreous immunization with prostatic antigen and CFA. The ensuing uveitis was proved histologically. Heteroimmunized rabbits and female animals showed less response and the level of antibodies detected was lower. Anti-prostatic antibodies were determined by the TRC flocculation and PCA techniques. Ouchterlony's method gave positive results not only for prostatic but also for other ocular antigens when tested against the same test sera.

Tuberculosis as a significant cause of uveitis-related blindness: current referral trends at a tertiary uveitis center in Indonesia.

OBJECTIVES: Uveitis may lead to blindness if improperly treated, yet the data on blindness due to uveitis, particularly, in low-resource countries, remain limited. In high-tuberculosis (TB) burden countries such as Indonesia, active systemic TB is among the leading causes of infectious uveitis. The combined impact of blindness, uveitis, and TB presents a substantial health and socioeconomic burden. This study aimed to assess the current situation of uveitis referrals, particularly, on the proportion of uveitis with active systemic TB and the proportion of blindness in TB-related uveitis. METH…

Evaluation of Uveitis Induced in Rats by a Type I Collagen Peptide as a Model for Childhood Arthritis-associated Uveitis.

Chronic asymptomatic and acute symptomatic anterior uveitis are forms of ocular inflammation associated with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) Chronic JIA-associated uveitis is characterized by young age of onset, female predilection, oligoarthritis, and antinuclear antibody (ANA) positivity. Acute JIA-associated uveitis predominantly affects older male juveniles who also develop enthesitis. A type I collagen-derived peptide (melanin-associated antigen [MAA]) induces anterior uveitis in rodents. In this study, we evaluated MAA-induced uveitis in rats as a potential model for JIA-uveitis. We …

Recurrence of Tubulointerstitial Nephritis Without Uveitis, in a Patient with Previous Tubulointerstitial Nephritis and Uveitis Syndrome After Transplant.

We report a case of recurrent tubulointerstitial nephritis without uveitis in a patient with previous tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome after transplant. A 26-year-old male patient who had been diagnosed with tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome at 8 years of age developed end-stage renal failure and subsequently underwent living-donor related renal transplant at 17 years old. The 1st recurrence of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis occurred 36 months after transplant, which was treated with increased immunosuppressive drugs. Graft function worsened again to …
