In an attempt to discover what muscle is responsible for medial movement of the lateral pharyngeal wall, the levator muscle was anesthetized with lidocaine under visual control by fiberscope in 3 normal subjects. The results indicate that the medial movement of the lateral pharyngeal wall results from the contraction of the levator. The attendant roll-up of the uvula toward the nasal side induced by the anesthesia was regarded as the action of the uvular muscle without the counterbalance of levator action.

Though frequently noted, orofacial anomalies in poly X syndromes have been seldom reviewed. In a study of patients with an X chromosome aneuploidy (XXXXX, XXXX, XXXXY, XXXY) the following facial and dental defects were found to be characteristic features of these syndromes: mainly bifid uvula and macroglossia, enamel defects, dental taurodontism and abnormal roots. These observations are discussed in the light of the possible role of X-linked genes.

It usually presents with sore throat, fever, foreign-body sensation, and odynophagia following esophagogastroduodenoscopy. An 11-year-old girl presented with a very rare traumatic retroclival epidural hematoma manifesting as bilateral abducens nerve palsy, deviation of the uvula to the left, and weakened movement of tongue, which developed after a motor vehicle accident. The patient was treated conservatively and showed good outcome. Retroclival hematoma is a mainly pediatric entity usually associated with ligamentous injury at the craniocervical junction, and can be treated conservatively with good outcome.

Acute epiglottitis, an unusual cause of acute upper airway obstruction in adults, is probably more common than previously recognized. While the history and physical findings are characteristic, the clinical diagnosis is often unsuspected. Radiographic findings include swelling of the epiglottis, aryepiglottic folds, arytenoids, uvulae, and prevertebral soft tissues, with ballooning of the hypopharynx and mesopharynx and obliteration of the valeculae. The epilgottic airway may show a characteristic pencil-thin configuration due to edema.
