Patterns of childhood immunization and all-cause mortality.

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports the safety of the recommended childhood immunization schedule as a whole. However, additional research is warranted as parents' refusing or delaying vaccinations has increased in recent years. All-cause mortality has been identified as a priority outcome to study in the context of the recommended immunization schedule. METHODS: We included children born January 1, 2004 through December 31, 2009, enrolled in the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) from birth through 18 months of age. We examined vaccination patterns during the first 18 months of life among 8 vaccines, a

Countering the potential re-emergence of a deadly infectious disease-Information warfare, identifying strategic threats, launching countermeasures.

OBJECTIVES: Eradicated infectious diseases like smallpox can re-emerge through accident or the designs of bioterrorists, and cause heavy casualties. Presently, the populace is largely susceptible as only a small percentage is vaccinated, and their immunity is likely to have waned. And when the disease re-emerges, the susceptible individuals may be manipulated by disinformation on Social Media to refuse vaccines. Thus, a combination of countermeasures consisting of antiviral drugs and vaccines and a range of policies for their application need to be investigated. Opinions regarding whether to r

Evaluation of pregnant women's knowledge about RSV and immunization attitudes before infant immunization with monoclonal antibodies in Turkey.

RSV is a major health concern for infants. A new long-acting anti-RSV monoclonal antibody has been introduced in some countries. This study aims to assess pregnant women's awareness of RSV and their attitudes toward infant immunization with the anti-RSV monoclonal antibody. A survey on the RSV mAb was conducted with 217 pregnant women, consisting of 28 questions on sociodemographic characteristics, knowledge of RSV infection and the RSV mAb, and attitudes toward giving the mAb to their infant. Pregnant women were specifically surveyed about the use of nirsevimab. Among the participants, 18.5%

Health workers' perception about the supplemental immunization activities in Gombe local government area, Gombe state.

Polio immunisation has faced challenges of refusal from care givers in recent times despite the efforts put in to ensure its success. To identify the role of service providers in this attitudinal shift, a survey describing the perception of health workers about the supplemental immunization activities was carried out among 265 health workers who participated in the 3rd round of the 2003 sub-national immunization days in Gombe local government area (LGA) of Gombe state, Nigeria. Data was collected using pretested qualitative and quantitative instruments. Quantitative data was analysed using EPI

Septic Shock and Purpura Fulminans Due to Streptococcus pneumoniae Bacteremia in an Unvaccinated Immunocompetent Adult: Case Report and Review.

BACKGROUND Despite proven efficacy of vaccinations against Streptococcus pneumoniae in preventing infection, only 70% of eligible individuals receive the vaccine in the United States. Pneumococcal bacteremia represents a form of invasive pneumococcal disease and is associated with high mortality, especially in immunocompromised patients and the elderly. Purpura fulminans is a rare complication and manifestation of disseminated intravascular coagulation and sepsis. It is exceedingly rare in the setting of pneumococcal bacteremia, particularly in immunocompetent individuals. CASE REPORT We repor

Counseling about the HPV vaccine: desexualize, educate, and advocate.

Information is provided for clinicians who treat adolescents and adult women to use when counseling patients about human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. A literature search was done to determine: (1) reasons for refusal of the vaccine, including cost and concerns that immunization against HPV will lead to promiscuity; (2) potential for non-sexual transmission of HPV; (3) non-genital locations of HPV; (4) non-genital cancers associated with HPV. Vaccines for Children Program and the Affordable Care Act eliminate many costs.Neither biological nor behavioral evidence supports the idea that sexual b

Epizootic situation and risk of rabies exposure in Polish population in 2000, with special attention to Lublin province.

In Poland in 2000 a total of 2,221 cases of animal rabies were reported, including 1,874 (84.4%) of wild animals. The evaluation of epizootic situation in 2000 has shown a few cases of animal rabies in western provinces of Poland, so in regions where a programme aimed at oral vaccination of foxes was introduced. Most cases of animal rabies were identified in the northeastern region, as well as in eastern and central Poland. In October 2000 in Warminsko-Mazurskie province (northeastern region of Poland) rabies was responsible for the death of 59-year-old woman, bitten by a rabid cat, and refuse

Safety first, science second: Healthcare workers' conditional trust and willingness to participate in Lassa fever vaccine trials in Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: Lassa fever poses a persistent occupational risk to healthcare workers (HCWs) in Nigeria. While HCWs are pivotal to vaccine trial success, their decision-making in settings shaped by historical research controversies remains poorly understood. This study explored the conditions under which HCWs at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH), northern Nigeria, considered participation in Lassa fever vaccine trials acceptable. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive qualitative study using semi-structured in-depth interviews with 20 physicians, nurses, and midwives at AKTH between September and

Vaccination Offer during the Occupational Health Surveillance Program for Healthcare Workers and Suitability to Work: An Italian Retrospective Cohort Study.

The active immunization of health care workers (HCWs) is a crucial measure to avoid nosocomial infection; nevertheless, vaccine coverage (VC) among health personnel in Italy is unsatisfactory. To improve VC in the healthcare set, the Hygiene and Occupational Medicine departments of Bari Policlinico General University Hospital applied a specific program. The operative procedure demands that in the context of the occupational medical examination, all workers are evaluated for susceptibility to vaccine-preventable diseases (VDPs), with immunization prophylaxis offered to those determined to be su

Measles Experience, Practice, and Knowledge by Pediatricians in the Context of Resurgent US Outbreaks.

OBJECTIVE: To assess measles experience, practice, and knowledge by pediatricians in the context of resurgent US outbreaks in 2018-2019. STUDY DESIGN: A nationally representative network of pediatricians were surveyed by email and mail from January to April 2020. RESULTS: The response rate was 67% (297 of 444). In the 3 years preceding the survey, 52% of the respondents reported awareness of measles cases in/near their community. Most thought that media reports about recent measles outbreaks had decreased delay/refusal of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine (6% "greatly decreased"; 66%

Intent to receive HPV vaccine and reasons for not vaccinating among unvaccinated adolescent and young women: findings from the 2006-2008 National Survey of Family Growth.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: HPV vaccine coverage for females has increased in the U.S., although challenges to achieving high coverage remain. HPV vaccine coverage continues to lag behind that of other routinely recommended adolescent vaccines and these gaps in coverage are widening. To inform strategies to improve uptake, we explore correlates of vaccine intention and describe reasons for refusing HPV vaccination among unvaccinated females in a nationally representative sample of adolescents and young adults during early stages of HPV vaccine availability. METHODS: In 2007-2008, 1243 females age

Social media and vaccine hesitancy.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the threat posed by anti-vaccination efforts on social media is critically important with the forth coming need for world wide COVID-19 vaccination programs. We globally evaluate the effect of social media and online foreign disinformation campaigns on vaccination rates and attitudes towards vaccine safety. METHODS: Weuse a large-n cross-country regression framework to evaluate the effect ofsocial media on vaccine hesitancy globally. To do so, we operationalize social media usage in two dimensions: the use of it by the public to organize action(using Digital Society

Controversies in vaccine mandates.

Policies that mandate immunization have always been controversial. The controversies take different forms in different contexts. For routine childhood immunizations, many parents have fears about both short- and long-term side effects. Parental worries change as the rate of vaccination in the community changes. When most children are vaccinated, parents worry more about side effects than they do about disease. Because of these worries, immunization rates go down. As immunization rates go down, disease rates go up, and parents worry less about side effects of vaccination and more about the comp

Haemophilus meningitis in an African neonate: time for active surveillance and institution of appropriate control measure.

BACKGROUND: Childhood routine immunization in Nigeria, like most developing nations, do not include vaccination against Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) infection. This is probably because infection with Hib is uncommon in children younger than two months due to passive acquisition of maternal antibodies which protects newborn till about four to six months of life. OBJECTIVE: To illustrate a case of neonatal meningitis caused by Haemophilus influenzae and to highlight its other peculiarities. METHODS: A 22-day old baby presented with excessive crying, refusal of feed, progressive abdomina

Integrating Blood Collection within Household Surveys: Lessons Learned from Nesting a Measles and Rubella Serological Survey within a Post-Campaign Coverage Evaluation Survey in Southern Province, Zambia.

Age-specific population immunity to many vaccine-preventable diseases can be measured using serological surveys. However, stand-alone serological surveys are infrequently conducted in low- and middle-income countries because of costs, operational challenges, and potential high refusal rates for blood collection. Nesting a serosurvey within a household cluster survey may overcome some of these challenges. We share lessons learned from nesting a serosurvey within a measles and rubella vaccination post-campaign coverage evaluation survey (PCES). In 15 of the 26 PCES clusters in Southern Province,
