Vestibular system in alcohol and drug addicts.

The study was carried out on 223 alcoholics, 96 drug addicts and 50 healthy persons as a control group. Clinical otolaryngological examination, ENG examination, and audiometry diagnosis were made. The results showed lesions of the central part of the vestibular system in alcohol and drug addicts which are much more evident on ENG examination than in clinical otolaryngological findings. We have observed that trauma capitis does not cause increased vestibular disturbances in addicted persons. Audiologic findings indicate significant hearing loss in both groups.

Vestibular rehabilitation improves daily life function.

This article reviews recent research that addresses the functional outcomes of intervention for vestibular disorders. Vestibular impairments cause disequilibrium, blurred vision, disorientation, and vertigo. These sensory disturbances and motor impairments in turn cause dysfunction in many activities of daily living and in social interactions that traditional medical treatments do not address. The motor sequelae of some vestibular disorders can be treated successfully with programs of graded exercises and activities, the functional implications of which are described herein. The functional imp

Reversible blockade of vestibular evoked activity in the chick.

Vestibular evoked potentials (VsEP) were recorded from young chickens following bilateral intralabyrinthine injections of Tetrodotoxin (TTX). The purpose of this study was to document the long term effects of TTX on the electrophysiological activity of the vestibular system. VsEP components were eliminated within 30 min of TTX injections. Twelve hours post-treatment the early waves of the response began to emerge from the background noise. Recordings completed 24 h after the manipulation were not different from baseline responses. Our results indicate that TTX is a useful substance for reversi

Menière's symptoms resulting from bilateral otosclerotic occlusion of the endolymphatic duct: an analysis of a causal relationship between otosclerosis and Menière's disease.

An association between otosclerosis and Menière's disease has been proposed on both a clinical and temporal bone histopathologic basis for well over three-quarters of a century. Controversy persists over a causal relationship between these two entities, however, and the underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms relating capsular otosclerosis with Menière's disease remain speculative. The first case of total, bilateral endolymphatic duct occlusion resulting from extensive capsular otosclerosis is presented in a woman manifesting Menière's symptoms. The severe endolymphatic hydrops resulting from o

Electron microscopy of hyalin bodies in the human intraosseous endolymphatic sac.

Hyalin bodies are amorphous, eosinophilic masses protruding from the subepithelial connective tissue into the lumen of the intraosseous endolymphatic sac (ES). We studied hyalin bodies at the electron microscopic level. Celloidin- embedded temporal bone sections known to have hyalin bodies were re-embedded into plastic and cut into thin sections appropriate for electron microscopy. The results revealed that the hyalin bodies are composed predominantly of thick bundles of collagenous fibers arranged in various directions. Fibroblasts and disintegrated macrophages were occasionally observed amon

[Possibilities for quantifying vestibular vertigo].

The problem of the quantification of vertigo is still unsolved. In this article, two methods in the field of visual orientation in which the vestibular system is involved, are proposed. The visual subjective vertical allows to determine the degree of deviations, which is augmented in acute vestibular lesions. - The degree of deviation correlates well with the subjective intensity of vertigo. Both methods seem to be useful in the quantification of subjective vestibular complaints.

Transmastoid labyrinthectomy.

Labyrinthectomy is an effective technique in the surgical treatment of vertigo. We believe that the transmastoid approach is the most direct method of vestibular ablation. This technique provides direct visualization of vestibular neuroepithelium and allows for positive identification of the facial nerve. Vertigo was successfully controlled by this method in thirty-seven (97%) of thirty-eight patients.

Vestibular signs and symptoms in Meniere's disorder: mechanical considerations.

Considerations of available evidence suggests that the vestibular signs and symptoms of typical Meniere attacks with return to normal function in the interval have mechanical causes as has long been advocated for their auditory counterparts. Membrane ruptures, the alternative explanation, are suggested to be the cause of the severe, and usually singular, attacks that are immediately followed by permanent auditory and vestibular impairments.

Coils of the cochlea.

Abnormalities of the cochlear portion of the bony labyrinth may often be suspected but are inadequately demonstrated by conventional tomography in the antero-posterior position. Further views are necessary. The authors demonstrate this by means of a comparison between tomographic and histological sections of the inner ear of an anencephalic with a unilateral Mundini defect. Submento-vertical tomograms give a good demonstration of the cochlea.

Vestibular reactions associated with minocycline.

Several recent reports have indicated that minocycline, a drug effective for meningococcal disease prophylaxis, is associated with a high incidence of vestibular side effects. In January 1975, a questionnaire on adverse reactions was completed by all 29 staff members of a North Georgia hospital who had taken minocycline at the recommended dosage after exposure to a suspected meningococcal meningitis case and by 25 age-, sex-, and occupation-matched non-treated controls. In the treated group 86% experienced moderate to severe vestibular symptoms; 84% of the symptomatic persons experienced their
