A practical method for assessing vibration exposure for workers operating vibrating hand tools on an automobile assembly line is presented. Vibration exposure is difficult to assess directly using many fast Fourier transform (FFT) spectral analyzers because of long task cycle times. Exposure time cannot be accurately estimated using time standards because of the high variability between operators and work methods. Furthermore, because workers frequently move about and get into inaccessible spaces, it is difficult to record vibration without interfering with the operation. A work sampling metho…

Raynaud's phenomenon often represents an early symptom of collagen diseases as well as of occlusive vascular disease; it can as well be due to vibration trauma following development of mechanical lesion of the acral capillary system. A rare case of professionally acquired vibration trauma in a miner who developed vasospastic ischaemia after 20 years subterranean work is reported. Non-invasive blood-flow measurements such as thermic relaxation time, transcutaneous O2-pressure, and laser-doppler perfusion rate, represent suitable means of diagnosis and observation of the course of the disease. C…

A possible basis for risk assessment of human exposure to vibration when using hand-held tools may be to determine the amount of mechanical energy that is absorbed by the hand-arm system. The aim of this investigation was to study the absorption of mechanical energy in the human hand-arm system during exposure to sinusoidal vibration within the frequency range of 20 to 1500 Hz. A handle, specially designed for this type of experiments, was used during the measurements. The influence of various experimental conditions, such as three different hand-arm postures, grip force (25-75 N) and vibratio…

Perceptual and motor effects of vibration applied simultaneously to the distal tendons of the Biceps and Triceps muscles, in isometric conditions and without sight of the stimulated arm, have been studied in human volunteers. Motor effects, measured by surface EMG, are inexistent when the flexor and extensor muscles are simultaneously vibrated at the same frequency. However, EMG activity appears in the muscle being vibrated at the lower frequency when simultaneous vibration is applied at different frequencies. The sensations felt by the subjects were reproduced by the nonvibrated arm and recor…

In Japan daily motorcycle mail deliverers have been exposed to vibration from the handlebars of their motorcycles. Handlebar vibration was measured during the operation of a motorcycle in order to evaluate the hazardous effects of vibration and to identify preventive measures against the vibration hazards. Tests were made on asphalted, unpaved, and packed-snow road surfaces. The tested motorcycles were selected from the many motorcycles in daily use. The test motorcycle was a 1-cylindered, 89-cm3, 4-cycle machine. The direction showing the maximum value of vibration acceleration was not always…

Monaural chinchillas were exposed for 10 days to one of these conditions: (1) whole-body vibration (30 Hz, 1 g rms acceleration); (2) impact noise (113 dB peak SPL 1/s) or (3) a combination of whole-body vibration and impact noise. Thresholds were monitored before, during and after the exposure using the auditory-evoked response or behavioral conditioning techniques. Vibration alone had essentially no effect on threshold. Exposure to impact noise produced a stable asymptotic level of threshold shift 2-8 h after exposure onset. The asymptotic threshold shift was roughly 35 and 43 dB SPL at 0.5 …

The psychophysical reactions to stochastic vibrations transmitted in vertical direction to sitting man are investigated in simulated experiments under laboratory conditions. In the framework of an appropriate concept of assessment, indicators related to bottleneck situations in functional systems of the organism for activity and strain measurements allow the evaluation of the recreation efficiency of interruptions in exposure time. The special meaning of the distribution and thus the frequency rate of the interruptions can be illustrated particularly by the variance in time of the strain proce…

Deep drilling equipment operates under high-load, strong-vibration, intermittent-impact, and variable environmental conditions, which motivate sensing systems that provide low-noise acquisition, synchronized triaxial measurements, local data integrity, and quantitative measurement-chain characterization. This paper presents a Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC-based triaxial vibration sensing station for deep drilling equipment applications. The modular station integrates conditioned-voltage triaxial accelerometer interfaces, analog signal conditioning, 24-bit simultaneous analog-to-digital conversion, el…

Vibrations can have harmful effects on the human brain and are associated with neurological damage, cognitive impairments, and an increased risk of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). Exposure to low-frequency vibrations, such as those encountered in blast events, contact sports, and accidents, can induce resonance within the brain, potentially amplifying mechanical stress and strain on neural structures. To better understand these effects, this study examines the mechanical response of a cerebrum-shaped human brain simulant subjected to vertical vibrations within the 1-12 Hz frequency range. Usin…

Real-time monitoring of the wear state of reciprocating sliding friction pairs has long been a challenging issue. To address this problem, this paper innovatively proposes a new method of constructing feature vectors based on the fractal parameters of frictional vibration signals and employing a nonlinear support vector machine to identify different wear states. Three typical wear states, namely running-in wear, normal wear, and severe wear, were designed by adjusting the amount of lubricating oil and distinguished by variations in the friction coefficient. Unlike conventional time-frequency o…

BACKGROUND: Whole-body vibration (WBV) is a popular exercise method known for its neuromuscular benefits, though the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. WBV activates distinct reflexes based on vibration amplitude and voluntary muscle activity: low-amplitude vibration or voluntary contraction typically triggers the tonic vibration reflex (TVR), whereas high-amplitude vibration or quiet standing activates the bone myoregulation reflex (BMR). Muscle spindles, which are sensitive to sympathetic input, may exhibit increased responsiveness to vibration during brief skin cooling.
OBJECTIVES: This…

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease mediated by the immune system. Its pathogenesis involves the interaction of multiple factors, among which the accumulation of dental plaque is considered the initial key factor in the onset of the disease. As the pathogenic bacteria in plaque proliferate and metabolites are released, the host's immune system produces a strong response, leading to an inflammatory response and structural destruction of local tissues. Traditional treatment relies on mechanical scraping and antibiotics but suffers from tissue damage, difficulty in removing deep-seate

BACKGROUND: The concentric tube robots (CTRs) show great potential for minimally invasive surgery due to their size and flexibility. However, friction remains a key factor contributing to accuracy errors in CTR applications, and reducing friction effects to enhance CTRs' precision remains a critical challenge.
METHODS: This paper pioneers the application of a vibration friction reduction (VFR) method for CTRs, aiming to reduce inter-tube friction and improve system accuracy. First, a CTR system with VFR was designed, incorporating a vibration generator consisting of four vibration motors and …

In this study, we present a wearable device for local vibration stimulation aimed to support postural stability in balance-compromised persons. Experiments were conducted with 15 young and 9 middle-aged adults without lower limb disabilities in a standing posture with vibration stimulation. The results showed a decrease in the mean velocity of the center-of-pressure sway in the standing posture during vibration presentation. In middle-aged and older adults, the rate of increase in the postural stability index was higher than that in the absence of vibration when the standing balance test was r…

This is the first known case report of COVID-19-related Raynaud's phenomenon (RP) identified at routine health surveillance of a male exposed to hand-transmitted vibration. The temporal relationship with COVID infection followed the course previously reported, being a late feature associated with mild COVID, and followed by gradual spontaneous recovery. It is not known whether the RP, in this case, is solely due to COVID or represents a summative effect of COVID and vibration exposure. A prudent approach is recommended in such circumstances with limitation of vibration exposure and continuing …
