We recently conducted video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) on an 8-day-old boy in whom a congenital mediastinal cyst had caused obstruction of the left main bronchus. After the surgery, the cyst recurred and caused reobstruction of the airway. When he was 51-day-old, we conducted VATS again. We could not perform cystectomy by VATS because the left lung was inflated, and we conducted cystectomy by thoracotomy.

Primary solitary neurofibroma of the chest wall is rare. We present a 38-year-old man with this disease. The patient was admitted to our hospital because of an abnormal shadow of the left lung in chest roentgenograms. Chest CT scanning showed an extrapleural tumor, 4 x 5 cm in size, which was homogenous and sharply demarcated. The tumor was resected with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery. The pathohistological diagnosis was neurofibroma originating from the 5th intercostal nerve. His postoperative course was uneventful. Neurofibroma commonly occurs in posterior mediastinum but rarely in the

Compared with the mid-sternotomy approach, minimally invasive mitral valve surgery is usually associated with longer surgical times. The increasing use of new technology has facilitated this procedure and shortened its duration, which may further improve surgical results. Since 2004, 152 patients have undergone minimally invasive mitral valve repair. Video-assisted 2D technology was used for the first 112 patients, while video-assisted 3D technology was used for the remaining 40 patients. All patients were divided into three groups: group 1 - the first 50 patients (learning curve using 2D tech

Aim: Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) has been widely used in the last decades. Nevertheless, the pros and cons of thoracoscopy vs. open surgery in pediatric oncology are still under debate. In literature, VATS has been applied for both diagnostic and ablative surgery to treat neurogenic tumors, thymic neoplasms, lung tumors and metastases, germ cell tumors, lymphoproliferative diseases, and other rare tumors. Recent reviews described excellent outcomes in pediatric oncology as well as in the treatment of adult lung cancer, with a significantly higher rate of mortality and complicat

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) are particularly vulnerable to opioid-induced sedation and hypoventilation. Accordingly, reducing opioid consumption in these patients is a primary goal of multimodal analgesic regimens. Although administration of preoperative gabapentin and acetaminophen has been shown to decrease postoperative opioid consumption in other surgeries, this approach has not been studied in VATS lobectomy. Our objective was to examine the impact of the addition of preoperative gabapentin and acetaminophen to a VATS lobectomy multimodal an

A 78-year-old man with situs inversus totalis who had a previous history of distal gastrectomy for gastric cancer was referred to our hospital for treatment of esophageal cancer. He was diagnosed as cT2N0M0 and underwent video-assisted thoracic surgery and open completion gastrectomy with jejunal reconstruction via the ante-thoracic route. The postoperative period was uneventful except for transient palsy of the right recurrent laryngeal nerve. Based on a preoperative assessment of anatomical abnormality and an intraoperative adaptation to the mirror image of the standard procedure, video-assi

A 3-month-old infant was scheduled for video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery for sequestration of the right lung. One-lung ventilation was performed with our handmade double-lumen tube. Intubation was performed easily using a laryngeal fiberscope and X-ray fluoroscopy. Good thoracoscopic view was obtained with simple deflation of the right lung. Perioperative course was uneventful.

To determine whether video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is associated with a lower incidence of intrathoracic adhesion after pulmonary resection, we assessed the incidence of adhesion for patients who underwent a second pulmonary resection. The site and extent of adhesion were evaluated by reviewing videotapes recorded during surgery. A significantly (P<0.05) lower rate of mediastinal or interlobar adhesion was observed in patients with pneumothorax (10%) in comparison with lobectomy (57%) or partial resection for tumors (63%), although there were no statistically significant differen

A 35-year-old male was admitted to our hospital for further examination of abnormal shadow on chest X-ray. Contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography (CT) showed a clear-shaped tumor with homogenous enhancement, measuring 25 x 20 mm in size, which had enlarged, compared with chest CT of 2 years before. The tumor appeared to be based partially on the parietal pleura. Under the diagnosis of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) originated from the visceral or parietal pleura, video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was performed. Under thoracoscopy, the tumor was pedunculated and arose from the parietal

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE STUDY: Minimally invasive mitral valve surgery was introduced into clinical practice during the mid 1990s. The clinical benefits of the technique, namely a reduction of surgical trauma, increased patient comfort and shorter hospital stay, are achieved by using a video-assisted, minithoracotomy approach rather than a standard median sternotomy. Herein is described the authors' experience with video-assisted mitral surgery through a micro-access.
METHODS: Between September 2003 and September 2006, 100 patients (mean age 65.7 years; range: 16-84 years; 29 aged >75 years

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) in the diagnosis and therapy of clinical mediastinal lymphadenopathies.
METHODS: In our Institute, from 1995 to 2001, 85 patients underwent VATS biopsy: 55 subjects (group 1) for suspected lung cancer (65%) and 30 (group 2) for unknown nodes enlargement (35%). Lymphonodes were considered suspected if > 1 cm by radiological imaging. We performed 83 thoracoscopic biopsies: 33 in level 5 (39%), 24 in level 6 (29%), 19 in level 7 (22%), and 7 in level 8 (8%).
RESULTS: A histological analys

BACKGROUND: The use of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) techniques to mobilize the phrenic nerve in the thoracic cavity for neurotization after brachial plexus injury was studied.
METHODS: From August 1999 to January 2000, 10 men and 1 woman with brachial plexus injury (left side in 5 and right side in 6) joined the study group. Their ages ranged from 20 to 38 years (average, 28 years). Supine after general anesthesia, all the patients had double-lumen trachea cannulas to guarantee complete lung collapse on the operative side. Three port incisions were made to allow introduction of the

BACKGROUND & AIM: Pulmonary echinococcosis, or pulmonary hydatid disease, caused by Echinococcus larvae, presents a significant health challenge, particularly in endemic areas. While surgery is the primary treatment for viable cysts, the optimal approach for this remains under debate. There is a lack of comparative evidence comparing traditional open thoracic surgery (OTS) with minimally invasive video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to comprehensively compare the efficacy and safety of VATS versus OTS for pulmonary hydatid disease; it will expan

This meta-analysis aimed to compare the outcomes of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and open thoracotomy in pediatric patients undergoing pulmonary metastasectomy for various malignancies. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases for studies comparing VATS and open thoracotomy in pediatric patients. The treatment effects for continuous outcomes were compared using mean differences (MDs), and binary endpoints were evaluated using odds ratios (ORs), with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Heterogeneity was assessed with I2 statistics. Statistical analyses wer

Effective postoperative recovery after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) remains a significant challenge, with patients frequently experiencing moderate to severe pain, pulmonary decline, and postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) despite modern multimodal analgesia. Intravenous lidocaine has been proposed as an opioid-sparing adjunct with systemic analgesic and antihyperalgesia properties, but its role in VATS is uncertain. This systematic review and meta-analysis identified a total of 31 studies, of which 9 randomized controlled trials involving 672 patients met the inclusion cri

BACKGROUND: Anterior mediastinal hematomas following blunt chest trauma are usually not life threatening. However, in rare cases, they can cause extrapericardial tamponade, requiring urgent surgical intervention. Despite its increasing adoption in elective thoracic procedures, the use of subxiphoid uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (SUVATS) in trauma remains scarcely reported. This case highlights a rare instance of extrapericardial tamponade caused by an anterior mediastinal hematoma, successfully managed using SUVATS in a trauma setting.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of
