Effect of feeding method on intake and behaviour of individually reared beef heifers fed a concentrate diet from 115 to 185 kg of body weight.

A total of eight Simmental heifers (114 ± 3.2 days old and weighing 118 ± 3.8 kg BW) were used to study the effects of feeding method on intake and animal behaviour in a crossover design experiment. Treatments consisted of feeding concentrate and chopped barley straw as (1) choice (CH; concentrate and straw in separate feedbunks) or (2) total mixed ration (TMR; concentrate and straw in one feedbunk). Feeds were offered on an ad libitum basis, but always maintaining a concentrate to straw ratio of 90 to 10. The experiment was performed in two 21-day periods, and sampling was carried out in the

Muscle function during takeoff and landing flight in the pigeon (Columba livia).

This study explored the muscle strain and activation patterns of several key flight muscles of the pigeon (Columba livia) during takeoff and landing flight. Using electromyography (EMG) to measure muscle activation, and sonomicrometry to quantify muscle strain, we evaluated the muscle function patterns of the pectoralis, biceps, humerotriceps and scapulotriceps as pigeons flew between two perches. These recordings were analyzed in the context of three-dimensional wing kinematics. To understand the different requirements of takeoff, midflight and landing, we compared the activity and strain of

Did General Douglas MacArthur have Parkinson disease? A video and archival analysis.

BACKGROUND: Historians have suggested that MacArthur had Parkinson disease (PD), and that this may have influenced his military judgment. There is little evidence to support or to refute this suggestion. OBJECTIVE: We aimed in this article to review multiple cinematic images, as well as the personal writings of Douglas MacArthur to determine the likelihood that he had PD. METHODS: A complete review of the Western literature on Douglas MacArthur, including YouTube, Google Scholar/Google Images/Google Video, PubMed, and HighWirePress was undertaken. Over 200 minutes of film footage was analyze

Video-EEG monitoring in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy treated with hypothermia.

BACKGROUND: Therapeutic hypothermia (TH) is becoming standard of care in newborns with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). The prognostic value of the EEG and the incidence of seizures during TH are uncertain. OBJECTIVE: To describe evolution of EEG background and incidence of seizures during TH, and to identify EEG patterns predictive for MRI brain injury. METHODS: A total of 41 newborns with HIE underwent TH. Continuous video-EEG was performed during hypothermia and rewarming. EEG background and seizures were reported in a standardized manner. Newborns underwent MRI after rewarming. Sen

Assessment and treatment of excessive straightening and destructive behavior in an adolescent diagnosed with autism.

Repetitive behaviors such as excessive straightening are commonly observed among individuals with autism. Attempts to prevent these behaviors may increase the likelihood of other problem behaviors. The present study was designed to assess and treat the excessive straightening and associated destructive behaviors of a 16-year-old boy who had been diagnosed with autism and moderate mental retardation. Following a series of functional analyses, an intervention that incorporated functional communication, extinction of destructive behavior, and blocking of repetitive straightening was demonstrated

Isolated facial myokymia as a presenting feature of pontine neurocysticercosis.

A 45-year-old healthy man presented with 2 weeks history of continuous rippling and quivering movements of his right side of face and neck suggestive of myokymia. MRI scan of the head revealed neurocysticercus in the pons. Treatment with steroids and carbamezapine produced a significant benefit. This is the first report of pontine neurocysticercosis presenting as an isolated facial myokymia.

Social acceptance and facial behavior in children with oral clefts.

OBJECTIVE: To examine and compare social acceptance, social behavior, and facial movements of children with and without oral clefts in an experimental setting. DESIGN: Two groups of children (with and without oral clefts) were videotaped in a structured social interaction with a peer confederate, when listening to emotional stories, and when told to pose specific facial expressions. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-four children and adolescents ages 7 to 16(1)/(2) years with oral clefts were group matched for gender, grade, and socioeconomic status with 25 noncleft controls. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Spec

An EMG screening method (dysphagia limit) for evaluation of neurogenic dysphagia in childhood above 5 years old.

Oropharyngeal dysphagia is not rare in older children before the adult age, especially the patients with cerebral palsy. Non-invasive simple tests are needed for the evaluation of children with neurogenic dysphagia including the patients with cerebral palsy. So we aimed to evaluate non-invasive ways to screen for dysphagia in children and the usefulness of this almost new electrophysiologic method for the detection of dysphagia in children with cerebral palsy. Twenty-eight healthy children and 12 patients with cerebral palsy were investigated for the applicability of this method. The movement

Interaction between blood lead concentration and delta-amino-levulinic acid dehydratase gene polymorphisms increases the odds of essential tremor.

Blood lead (BPb) concentrations are elevated in essential tremor (ET) cases. The delta-amino-levulinic acid dehydratase (ALAD) gene codes for ALAD, the principal enzyme involved in lead kinetics. Carriers of the ALAD-2 allele may be more susceptible to lead toxicity. The objective of this study was to test, using a case-control design, whether an interaction between BPb concentration and ALAD allele status increases the odds of ET. Mean log BPb concentration was significantly higher in 63 cases than 101 controls (0.47+/-0.26 vs. 0.35+/-0.25 microg/dl). Eighteen (28.6%) cases vs. 17 (16.8%) con

Can an instruction video or palpation aid improve the effectiveness of breast self-examination in detecting tumors? An experimental study.

INTRODUCTION: Although large randomized trials have not shown benefits for breast self-examination (BSE), many organizations still endorse the practice. This study aimed to determine whether an instruction video or palpation aid improved the effectiveness of BSE. METHODS: A total of 100 volunteers (50 men and 50 women) with no previous experience of BSE and/or clinical breast palpation were randomly assigned to the following intervention: instruction video seen versus not seen and use of palpation aids versus aids not used. Participants completed psychological trait and previous knowledge que

Vagus nerve stimulation for essential tremor: a pilot efficacy and safety trial.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the safety and efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) for essential tremor (ET). METHODS: This was a pilot open-treatment trial at three centers, with masked videotape tremor assessments. Inclusion required a severity score of 3 or 4 on the Tremor Rating Scale (TRS) in one or both hands. At baseline, tremor was assessed with TRS and Unified Tremor Rating Assessment (UTRA), accelerometry, and a videotape protocol. The VNS device was implanted with leads placed around the left cervical vagus nerve. Stimulation was adjusted over 4 weeks before the repeat tremor assessment

Office-based lower airway endoscopy in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Office-based evaluation of the lower airway in adults with only topical anesthetics has been well documented. This study was performed to assess the feasibility of performing office-based lower airway endoscopy in a pediatric population. DESIGN: One hundred five consecutive pediatric patients requiring flexible laryngoscopy were studied. All received only a topical anesthetic-decongestant applied nasally. After flexible laryngoscopy, the endoscope was passed below the vocal folds to visualize the subglottis, trachea, and carina. All evaluations were videotaped for later review. S

Arm chorea secondary to an unruptured giant aneurysm.

We describe the case of a 20-year-old male who developed right-arm choreic movements secondary to a giant unruptured aneurysm impinging upon the left thalamus, putamen, globus pallidus, cerebral peduncle, midbrain, and subthalamic nucleus. The aneurysm was treated successfully with coils and a supraclinoid balloon. Abnormal movements initially failed to ameliorate, but within a few months, it was possible to discontinue symptomatic haloperidol therapy, with only mild residual abnormal movements.

Is social phobia related to lack of social skills? Duration of skill-related behaviours and ratings of behavioural adequacy.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to investigate whether social phobics differ from clinically anxious and non-clinical comparison groups with regard to either the duration of skill-related behaviours displayed during a social conversation or their behavioural adequacy as perceived by observers. DESIGN: A between-group design was used for the first part of the study. The duration of specified skill-related behaviours of a group of socially phobic participants was compared with the behaviours of clinically anxious and non-clinical participants. A within-group design was used for the

Mother-child interaction revisited: communication with non-speaking physically disabled children.

This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the interaction between mothers and their severely physically disabled children who have motor speech disorders. The study was designed to partially replicate previous investigations, most notably those undertaken by Light et al., to examine if the patterns of conversation previously described were observed in interaction involving children of a wide age range. Twenty children who had four-limb cerebral palsy, with no diagnosed learning difficulties or sensory impairments, and who were between 2 and 10 years of age inclusive participated in the resea

Reconstitution of squamous epithelium in Barrett's oesophagus with endoscopic argon plasma coagulation: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: Barrett's oesophagus is a premalignant condition. Recent reports have suggested that laser coagulation or photodynamic therapy combined with acid suppression may induce reconstitution of squamous mucosa. However, a high percentage of residual glands remain in cases treated with both techniques. Argon plasma coagulation (APC) appears to be an attractive alternative to other thermoablative techniques. The aim of this study was to investigate the reconstitution of squamous epithelium in Barrett's oesophagus after APC. METHODS: Fifteen patients with histologically proven Barrett's oes

Intermodal perception of adult and child faces and voices by infants.

This research investigated the ability of 4- and 7-month-old infants to match unfamiliar, dynamic faces and voices on the basis of age or maturity. In Experiment 1, infants received videotaped trials of an adult and a child of the same gender, side by side, speaking a nursery rhyme in synchrony with one another. The voice to one and then the other face was played in synchrony with the movements of both faces in a random order across 12 trials. On one block of 6 trials a man and a boy were presented, and on the other block a woman and a girl. Results indicated significant matching of the faces
