We analysed 127 specimens of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from 118 HIV-1-infected individuals at different stages of infection. Intrathecal antibody synthesis was evident in 23 samples tested and was more frequently directed against HIV than against rubella virus, herpes simplex virus, varicella zoster virus or cytomegalovirus. HIV was isolated from only 14% of the 127 CSF specimens, but from 82% of CSF-paired blood samples. HIV antigen was detected in 12% of CSF specimens and 44% of paired plasma samples. Two Friesian cows, half-sibs by a common dam, produced four bull calves with severe congenital hypotrichosis and incisor anodontia and three normal heifers by six unrelated Holstein, Friesian, Devon and Hereford bulls. Thirty virologically confirmed cases of dengue infection with a fatal outcome were studied clinically in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 1975 to 1978. All 4 dengue virus serotypes were isolated from fatal cases, but dengue type 3 was responsible for 21 (70%) of these isolates, compared to only 47% of isolates from all cases of dengue infection. An epidemiological and virological study on meningitis in Alsace during the 13-year period 1968-1981 is reported. 503 viruses isolated were associated with the diagnosis of meningitis. The Echovirus type 30 accounted for 48 p. 100 of the cases, the mumps virus of 12 p. 100. The remarkable high incidence of Echo 30 virus-associated cases is related to three outbreaks which occurred in Alsace during the summers of 1968, 1975 and 1980. Children below 12 years of age are the most sensitive population and particularly boys who made up 2/3 of the number of cases.

An extensive outbreak of acute hemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) occurred from September to December 1974 in Thailand. At least 29 patients with polio-like motor paralysis that complicated AHC were hospitalized in Bangkok. Paired or triplicate samples of serum from 16 patients were tested for neutralizing antibody to enterovirus type 70 (EV70). A case resembling subacute bacterial endocarditis in which blood cultures were repeatedly negative is described. The patient had had an influenza-like illness nine months before admission to hospital followed by intervening vague illness and loss of weight.
