Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a DNA virus from the herpes virus group affecting only humans. More than 90% adults are infected by the virus, but very few ever have symptoms. Within the abdomen, both solid and hollow viscera can be involved in symptomatic disease. Awareness of the spectrum of imaging findings, high index of suspicion, and appropriate clinical and laboratory information can help in the early and accurate diagnosis in these cases.

Situs inversus totalis is a rare, congenital condition that is characterized by the development of the thoracic and abdominal viscera in a mirror image to their normal orientation. This case report describes the condition in a 4-year-old, spayed female Doberman pinscher that was evaluated for dyspnea following sedation. Radiography confirmed a diaphragmatic hernia. Situs inversus was discovered during surgical correction. The diaphragmatic rent was repaired, and the dog was clinically normal at recheck 13 months after surgery.

Surgery with the aid of a laparoscope has enabled the surgeon to visualize the pelvic viscera and supports with new clarity. This has also enabled procedures normally performed through a laparotomy incision to be performed without a large incision. Generally, this results in a reduction in postoperative pain and a reduced convalescence time. The first reports for bladder neck surgery are encouraging, but longer-term follow up is required before a full appraisal of these new techniques can be made.

Apert's syndrome is a rare malformation (dysostosis), probably of a hereditary nature. Reye's syndrome (encephalopathy with fatty infiltration of the viscera) is an acute illness of childhood that produces hepatic dysfunction and metabolic encephalopathy. The disease is fatal in as many as 40% of cases. The cause is unknown. Several environmental agents, particularly salicylates and aflatoxin, have been implicated as possible toxins in this disorder. Treatment is directed at controlling intracranial pressure, reversing metabolic abnormalities and providing intensive supportive care. Normal neurologic function returns in most survivors.

Quantitative anatomic study of the hearts of eight infants with left-sided congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) has revealed significantly decreased cardiac mass, due to hypoplasia of the left atrium and ventricle and interventricular septum. These morphologic deficiencies may be a result of compression of mediastinal structures by herniated abdominal viscera during prenatal life. Left ventricular hypoplasia is likely to be an important factor in the pathogenesis of cardiac insufficiency in patients with left CDH.

Malakoplakia is a fairly rare disease, normally found in women (four out of every five cases). It mainly attacks the urinary system, but may spread to the other viscera. The symptoms are not clinically specific. The main interest of the disease is its pathogenesis, from which its treatment is derived. It is in fact an immunological dysfunction of the phagocytes, leading to chemical disorders in the macrophages. Its treatment is based on the use of cholinergic agonists and vitamin C therapy.

Vesicocolic fistula due to diverticular disease of the colon is conventionally treated by resection of the diseased bowel and closure of the vesical defect. Three cases are described in which separation of the viscera and simple suture of the vesical and colonic defects was carried out. A greater omental graft was interposed between the rectum and bladder. Two of the patients are well 12 and 26 months postoperatively. The third patient died a year postoperatively from a complication of her diverticular disease.

Acute appendicitis with fixation of the appendix tip to the various parenchymatous viscera, such as the liver, the kidney, the ovary, etc., is rather frequent Fixation of the apical are of the appendix to cavitary organs, and development of fistulae is however rare. A case is presented, of an appendiculo-colic fistula that developed as a result of previous inflammatory processes. Such a case has not been presented before in the literature investigated by the author. The surgical solution consisted in appendicectomy with bipolar closure of the two appendicular stumps.

Wegener's granulomatosis is a necrotizing vasculitis of unknown etiology characterized mainly by inflammation of the small- and medium-sized arteries and veins that affect any viscera. It may rarely involve the gastrointestinal tract. Only a few cases of multiple focus ileal perforation due to ulcers associated with Wegener's granulomatosis have been reported. Herein we report a case of a 32-year-old man with extensive intestinal small bowel ischaemic perforation due to Wegener's granulomatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Vascular leiomyoma originating in the renal vein is a rare entity. Our case allowed us charting of progression of renal vein leiomyoma for 8-years' duration. Apart from intraluminous growth causing displacement of viscera, the leiomyoma did not show any aggressive behaviour.
