BACKGROUND: To assess the prevalence of vision impairment and refractive error in school children 12-15 years of age in Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, Vietnam.
DESIGN: Prospective, cross-sectional study.
PARTICIPANTS: 2238 secondary school children.
METHODS: Subjects were selected based on stratified multistage cluster sampling of 13 secondary schools from urban, rural and semi-urban areas. The examination included visual acuity measurements, ocular motility evaluation, cycloplegic autorefraction, and examination of the external eye, anterior segment, media and fundus.

PURPOSE: To determine the role of vision and visual attention factors in automobile crash involvement.
METHODS: Drivers aged 65 to 84 years were identified during the baseline interview (1993-1995) of the Salisbury Eye Evaluation (SEE) Study. Crash involvement through December 1997 was determined from Maryland State motor vehicle records. Vision tests at baseline included distance acuity at normal and low luminance, contrast sensitivity, glare sensitivity, stereoacuity, and visual fields. Visual attention was evaluated with the Useful Field of View Test (UFOV; Visual Awareness, Chicago, IL).

INTRODUCTION: With high increase in myopia prevalence, we aimed to assess whether Plusoptix_A09 can be used in myopic children over spectacles to predict visual acuity (VA) and myopic refraction changes.

INTRODUCTION: The majority of blindness worldwide could be prevented or reversed with early diagnosis and treatment, yet identifying at-risk and prevalent cases of eye disease and linking them with care remain important obstacles to addressing this burden. Leading causes of blindness like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age-related macular degeneration have detectable early asymptomatic phases and can cause irreversible vision loss. Mass screening for such diseases could reduce visual impairment at the population level.

We report a case of accommodative spasm in an 8-year-old girl discovered by handheld photoscreener. The patient was found to have a Chiari I malformation, and managed with atropine drops and reading glasses, ultimately with improvement in her symptoms. We believe this to be the first case of accommodative spasm diagnosis aided by the use of a handheld photoscreener.

Here, we systematically explore the size and spacing requirements for identifying a letter among other letters. We measure acuity for flanked and unflanked letters, centrally and peripherally, in normals and amblyopes. We find that acuity, overlap masking, and crowding each demand a minimum size or spacing for readable text. Just measuring flanked and unflanked acuity is enough for our proposed model to predict the observer's threshold size and spacing for letters at any eccentricity. The incidence of amblyopia in the normal population is 2-6%, whereas among patients with congenital ptosis it can be as high as 50%. We reviewed 146 cases of congenital ptosis in patients aged between 5 months and 15 years and compared them to a control group of 34 age- and sex-matched patients. In 78 children (156 eyes) reliable optotype visual acuity could be obtained. Fifty-three eyes (34%) were amblyopic. Universal newborn eye screening facilitates early diagnosis of ocular abnormalities and mitigates vision loss. "Referral warranted" eye disease is present at birth in about 5.5% of term infants, with "macular hemorrhage impinging on the fovea" representing about 50% of referral warranted disease.
