Effect of vitamin A palmitate on vitamin A-deficient rabbits.

Purpose: We examined the effects of vitamin A palmitate (VA pal) eyedrops on the symptoms caused by vitamin A-deficiency in rabbits. Methods: Three-week-old rabbits were raised on a vitamin A-deficient diet, and were examined for the quantity of retinol in the serum and the condition of the anterior segment of the eye. The vitamin A-deficient animals were treated with VA pal eyedrops. Results: The retinol in the serum began to decrease 7 months after the animals were placed on the vitamin A-deficient diet. After 10 months, superficial punctate keratitis and the loss of conjunctival goblet cells

Large dose vitamin A to control vitamin A deficiency.

Vitamin A deficiency is a serious problem throughout the developing world. An estimated 25-50 million children may well suffer the physiologic consequences of vitamin A deficiency; 5 million develop xerophthalmia, of whom 250,000 to 500,000 go blind every year; and untold numbers are at increased risk of diarrhea, respiratory disease, and death. Even mild vitamin A deficiency has been associated with a 14- to 10-fold increase in mortality, and controlled field trials have demonstrated vitamin A supplementation can reduce childhood death rates by 30%-70%. Three general intervention strategies e

Vitamin A and vitamin E in umbilical artery and vein.

Vitamin A and vitamin E concentrations were measured in 27 umbilical arterial and venous plasma samples obtained from 24 singleton pregnancies and one triplet pregnancy. The levels of both vitamins were similar in arterial and venous plasma (mean +/- S.D. vitamin A 209 +/- 41 micrograms/l and 220 +/- 51 micrograms/l; vitamin E: 2.31 +/- 0.74 mg/l and 2.31 +/- 0.76 mg/l, respectively), but individual differences were observed in some cases. A significant relationship (p less than 0.001) existed between the arterial and venous levels of both vitamins. However, when arterial vitamin A levels were…

[Vitamin A, the "anti-infective" vitamin? (author's transl)].

Severe vitamin A deficiency undoubtedly leads to increased susceptibility to infection. On the one hand this is due to the mucosae being damaged by the vitamin deficiency to the extent that these natural barriers are more easily overcome by pathogens. On the other hand, however, also the general defensive condition is weakened, which is partly attributable to a decrease in lymphatic tissue. An increased supply of vitamin A may possibly intensify the production of antibodies, but a definitely positive effect on the course of infections is not established. Therefore, the characterization of vita

Vitamin K: the coagulation vitamin that became omnipotent.

Vitamin K, discovered in the 1930s, functions as cofactor for the posttranslational carboxylation of glutamate residues. Gammacarboxy glutamic acid (Gla)-residues were first identified in prothrombin and coagulation factors in the 1970s; subsequently, extra-hepatic Gla proteins were described, including osteocalcin and matrix Gla protein (MGP). Impairment of the function of osteocalcin and MGP due to incomplete carboxylation results in an increased risk for developing osteoporosis and vascular calcification, respectively, and is an unexpected side effect of treatment with oral anticoagulants.

[Vitamin D dependency and vitamin D resistance].

Vitamin D dependency is classified into two clinical disorders which are caused by genetic defect of vitamin D metabolism. Vitamin D dependent rickets type I and type II are the deficiency of 25-hydroxyvitamin D-1 alpha-hydroxylase and the defect of receptor for 1 alpha,25-dihydroxyvitamin D, respectively. In contrast, vitamin D resistance shows hypophosphatemia derived from disorder(s) of phosphate transport system in renal brush border membrane. There are three clinical entities such as hereditary hypophosphatemic rickets with hypercalciuria, familial hypophosphatemic rickets and oncogenic h

Vitamin A intake and vitamin A deficiency in rural children.

The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency was estimated in 366 rural children in the age group of 1 to 15 years. In a systematically selected subsample of 90 children, the dietary intake of vitamin A was assessed. The prevalence of vitamin A deficiency signs ranged from 24.1 to 34.8%. The adequacy of dietary intake of vitamin A ranged from 8 to 12% when compared with the recommended dietary allowance. The dietary intake of children with and without vitamin A deficiency was not different (p greater than 0.05). The main source of beta carotene in the diet was cereals accounting for 47.9% of the tot

Vitamin A turnover in rats as influenced by vitamin A status.

Vitamin A turnover was studied in rats fed vitamin A-sufficient (+A) or vitamin A-deficient (--A) diets for 24--25 days. Hepatic vitamin A stores of the +A group (543 microgram) were significantly larger than those of the --A group (11 microgram) and similarly, the plasma vitamin A concentration of the +A group (56 microgram/dl) was significantly higher than that of the --A group (26 microgram/dl). Rats were injected intravenously with plasma containing tritium-labeled retinol (3H-ROH) obtained from vitamin A-deficient donor rats previously fed 3H-ROH. Plasma samples from injected recipients w

Response of plasma levels of vitamin A to a dose of vitamin A as an indicator of hepatic vitamin A reserves in rats.

Rats were fed diets deficient [-A] or sufficient [+A] (3 mg retinol equivalents/kg) in vitamin A, and without [-RA] or with [+RA] (12 mg/kg) retinoic acid supplementation for up to 33 days. Rats with plasma vitamin A levels ranging from 7 to 62 micrograms/dl were studied at intervals during progressive depletion of liver stores of vitamin A (expt. 2) and when liver stores were nearly exhausted (less than 10 micrograms/g) or replete (up to 100 micrograms/g) with vitamin A (expt. 1). A dose of retinyl acetate in corn oil (20 micrograms retinol equivalents) was administered by intubation directly

Association Between Vitamins Related to Brain Development and Sleep in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

PURPOSE: Sleep problems and nutritional abnormalities are common in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), yet the relationships between specific vitamin status, sleep characteristics, and ASD symptoms remain unclear. This study investigated the associations between neurodevelopment-related vitamin levels, sleep problems, and clinical features in children with ASD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 605 children with ASD aged 2-7 years. Blood vitamin levels were measured using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Sleep problems were as

HPLC-Orbitrap-MS for the Determination of B-Vitamins in Fruit Juices and Food Supplements.

Accurate assay of vitamins in foods is a considerable analytical challenge due to the chemical complexity of matrices and molecular structures. Orbitrap MS technology coupled with liquid chromatography through electrospray ionization source (HPLC-ESI-MS) was applied for the simultaneous determination of seven B-vitamins (thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, biotin, and folic acid) in fruit juices and dietary supplements. The method employed an easy sample treatment procedure, involving direct dilution for juices and a fast solvent extraction for supplements. Chromatograph…
