Impairment in writing, but not reading, morphologically complex words.

We report a patient, FP, with phonological dyslexia who is impaired in writing affixed words to dictation, but demonstrates no such deficit when reading affixed words. Moreover, she was much more impaired in the writing of regularly inflected words (e.g., "walked") as compared to irregularly inflected words (e.g., "ran") and derived words (e.g., "walker"). These findings indicate that FP's deficit was morphologically based and are consistent with accounts that assume that morphologically complex words are decomposed during lexical processing. The data also suggest that the lexical representati

Italian developmental dyslexic and proficient readers: where are the differences?

Italian dyslexic children are characterized by a pervasive reading speed deficit, with relatively preserved accuracy. This pattern has been associated with predominant use of the nonlexical reading procedure. However, there is no evidence of a deficit in the lexical route of Italian dyslexics. We investigated both lexical and nonlexical reading procedures in dyslexic children through two marker effects, namely, the word frequency effect and the effect of contextual grapheme-to-phoneme conversion rules. Although dyslexics were slower and less accurate than controls, they were affected by word f

Wots that werd? Pseudowords (non-words) may be a misleading measure of phonological skills in young learner readers.

Pseudoword (non-word) reading tasks are a commonly used measure of phonological processing across diverse fields of reading research. However, whether pseudoword reading gives any more information about phonological processing in young learner readers than does the reading of real words has seldom been considered. Here we show that pseudoword and real word reading are so strongly correlated (r=0.94) in the first 4 years of school as to be representative of the same construct. Two of the subskills of phonological processing, phonological awareness and rapid automatic naming also predict almost

Reading words and pseudowords: an eye movement study of developmental dyslexia.

The pattern of eye movements during reading was studied in 12 developmental dyslexics and in 10 age-matched controls. According to standard reading batteries, dyslexics showed marked reading slowness and prevalently used the sublexical procedure in reading. Eye movements were recorded while they read lists of short and long words or pseudowords. In normal readers, saccade amplitude increased with word length without a concomitant change in the number of saccades; in contrast, the number of saccades increased for long pseudowords. In dyslexics, the eye movement pattern was different. The number

Basic processes in reading: semantics affects speeded naming of high-frequency words in an alphabetic script.

Previous work on single-word naming in university-level readers has shown that semantic factors affect the naming of low frequency words both in an alphabetic script like English, which is often irregular in terms of the spelling-sound correspondences, and in the syllabic Japanese Kana script, in which the spelling-sound correspondences are consistent. The present experiment shows that a semantic factor (imageability) affects naming time to both low- and high-frequency words in an alphabetic script (Persian) when the word is opaque (vowels not specified) but not when it is transparent (vowels

Spoken language comprehension in children and adults with Angelman Syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Objective evaluation of receptive communication abilities in nonspeaking individuals using standardized behavioral measures can be complicated by co-occurring intellectual disabilities and motor difficulties. Eye tracking during listening may offer an informative complementary approach to directly evaluate receptive language skills. METHOD: This study examined feasibility of eye gaze measures as an index of spoken language comprehension in nonspeaking children and adults with Angelman syndrome (AS; n = 23) using a looking-while-listening procedure. Typically developing children

They provide impor … achers include remedial lessons and promoting a culture of reading for leisure to enhance learners' vocabulary and narrative skills. The SLTs and the learning support therapist use speech-language programmes and assistive technologies. Language profiles of Welsh-English bilingual children with Down syndrome.

PURPOSE: Given that children with Down syndrome (DS) have language learning difficulties, concerns have been raised about the capacity of th … airments were evident for both DS groups, particularly for expressive morphosyntax. Welsh receptive vocabulary scores of the bilinguals with DS were comparable to the TD bilinguals. Working memory, phonological awareness and chronological age were the strongest predictors of receptive language outcomes in both DS groups, explaining 90% of the variability. C …

Use of context in the word recognition process by adults with a significant history of reading difficulties.

We examined whether university students who report a significant history of reading difficulties (RD; n = 24) differed from university students with no history of reading difficulties (NRD; n = 31) in how sentence context affects word recognition. Experiment 1 found no differences in how congruent sentence primes or syntactic manipulations of the sentence primes affected the performance of the two groups. However, only the RD group displayed a significant inhibition effect when the target word was preceded by an incongruent sentence prime. Experiment 2 found that the groups differed in how mea

Word length, phonemic, and visual similarity effects in poor and normal readers.

Serial order recall for visually and auditorily presented stimuli was examined in a group of 12-year-old poor readers and 7-year-old reading-age controls. With pictorial presentation, the poor readers showed a visual similarity effect, no word length effect, and a smaller phonemic similarity effect than that of controls. However, with visual presentation of printed words and with auditory presentation, poor readers showed word length and phonemic similarity effects of similar magnitude to that of controls. It is concluded that poor readers rely on visual information in tasks where the presente

Processing of second language emotion-laden words during sentence reading: Evidence from eye movements.

Research on emotional word processing has consistently reported an emotionality advantage for emotional over neutral words, particularly amo … lyzed using mixed-effects models. In addition to emotionality, the analyses examined the effects of vocabulary knowledge, age, word frequency, and word length. Contrary to findings reported for L1 speakers, neither positive nor negative emotion-laden words demonstrated a robust processing advantage over neutral words once lexical and participant-related vari …

Influences of individual, text, and assessment factors on text/discourse comprehension in oral language (listening comprehension).

We investigated the contributions of multiple strands of factors-individual characteristics (struggling reader status, working memory, vocabulary, grammatical knowledge, knowledge-based inference, theory of mind, comprehension monitoring), a text feature (narrative vs. expository genre), and question types (literal and inferential)-to one's performance on discourse comprehension in oral language (listening comprehension), using data from 529 second graders. Results from explanatory item response models revealed that substantial variance in listening comprehension was attributable to difference…

Definitions and criteria for diabetic foot disease.

Multiple disciplines are involved in the management of diabetic foot disease, and a common vocabulary is essential for clear communication. Based on the systematic reviews of the literature that form the basis of the International Working Group on the Diabetic Foot (IWGDF) Guidelines, the IWGDF has developed a set of definitions and criteria for diabetic foot disease. This document describes these definitions and criteria. We suggest these definitions be used consistently in both clinical practice and research to facilitate clear communication between professionals.

Semantic fluency in deaf children who use spoken and signed language in comparison with hearing peers.
