Synchronous Regeneration: Key Mechanism for Selective Reinnervation in Bilateral Vocal Fold Paralysis.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the mechanisms underlying the success of the present selective laryngeal reinnervation technique in bilateral vocal fold paralysis, providing a foundation for future clinical applications. METHODS: Seven healthy Beagle dogs underwent selective reinnervation of the left recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN): the adductor branch was reinnervated with the thyrohyoid branch of the hypoglossal nerve, and the abductor branch with the phrenic nerve root. Preoperative evaluations included laryngoscopy and laryngeal electromyography (LEMG). Postoperative assessments were p

Videoendoscopic assessment of dynamic laryngeal function during exercise in horses with grade-III left laryngeal hemiparesis at rest: 26 cases (1992-1995).

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate laryngeal function by means of videoendoscopy during high-speed treadmill exercise in racehorses with grade-III left laryngeal hemiparesis at rest and to determine outcome of treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 26 racehorses. PROCEDURE: Videoendoscopy of the larynx was performed while horses were at rest and exercising on a treadmill. Horses were classified as having grade-IIIA, -IIIB, or -IIIC laryngeal hemiparesis on the basis of the degree of arytenoid cartilage abduction maintained during exercise. Postoperative racing performance was determined by ev

Afferent influences on cell death and birth during development of a cortical nucleus necessary for learned vocal behavior in zebra finches.

Forebrain nuclei that control learned vocal behavior in zebra finches are anatomically distinct and interconnected by a simple pattern of axonal pathways. In the present study, we examined afferent regulation of neuronal survival during development of the robust nucleus of the archistriatum (RA). RA projection neurons form the descending motor pathway of cortical vocal-control regions and are believed to be directly involved in vocal production.RA receives afferent inputs from two other cortical regions, the lateral magnocellular nucleus of the anterior neostriatum (lMAN) and the higher vocal

Treatment of vocal fold scarring with autologous bone marrow-derived human mesenchymal stromal cells-first phase I/II human clinical study.

BACKGROUND: Vocal fold (VF) scarring, caused by surgery or inflammation, often results in severe voice problems or aphonia. Effective lasting treatment is lacking. Previous in vitro and in vivo animal studies reported positive effects on VF scar resolution with mesenchymal stromal cell (MSC) implantation. The principal aim of this study was to examine safety aspects and secondly treatment efficacy vocal fold function in patients with VF scarring and severe voice problems. METHODS: In this open-label phase I/II study, 16 patients were treated with surgical scar resection followed by injection

Pressure induced tissue resection in the larynx: A preliminary canine study.

OBJECTIVES: The application of laser (light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) energy in the larynx relies on thermal injury. The impact of this injury on adjacent tissue can be undesirable. Attempts have been made to limit the extent and range of injury to adjacent tissue. The O-Pel Surgical System (Precise Light Surgical, Inc., Campbell, CA), a new technology, utilizes kinetic energy through Pressure Induced Tissue Resection (PITR) (Precise Light Surgical, Inc.) to cut tissue, theoretically eliminating injury to adjacent tissue. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the P

Neural mechanisms of auditory species recognition in birds.

Auditory communication in humans and other animals frequently takes place in noisy environments with many co-occurring signallers. Receivers are thus challenged to rapidly recognize salient auditory signals and filter out irrelevant sounds. Most bird species produce a variety of complex vocalizations that function to communicate with other members of their own species and behavioural evidence broadly supports preferences for conspecific over heterospecific sounds (auditory species recognition). However, it remains unclear whether such auditory signals are categorically recognized by the sensor

Surgery of adult bilateral vocal fold paralysis in adduction: history and trends.

Bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) in adduction is characterised by inspiratory dyspnea, due to the paramedian position of the vocal folds with narrowing of the airway at the glottic level. The condition is often life threatening and therefore requires surgical intervention to prevent acute asphyxiation or pulmonary consequences of chronic airway obstruction. Aside from corticosteroid administration and intubation, which are only temporary measures, the standard approach for improving respiration is to perform a tracheotomy. Over the past century, a vast majority of surgical interventions h

Visual and acoustic exploratory behaviors toward novel stimuli in Antillean manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) under human care.

Exploratory behaviors describe the actions performed by an animal to obtain information on an object, environment, or individual by using its different senses. Exploration is described in some marine mammals, but not yet in manatees. Our study investigated behavioral and acoustic responses of two groups of Antillean manatees (N = 12 and N = 4) housed in zoological parks toward various stimuli involving three sensory modalities: visual, tactile, and auditory. Simultaneous audio and video recordings were collected during three periods of time (i.e., before, during, and after the presentation of

Playing it by ear: gregarious sparrows recognize and respond to isolated wingbeat sounds and predator-based cues.

The ability to detect an incoming attack provides a final opportunity for an animal to avoid predation. In birds, vision is the main sensory mode in detecting attacks, but auditory cues likely play an important role. The role of auditory cues from predators themselves remains largely unstudied. We evaluated the ability of free-living, gregarious sparrows (Passerellidae) to recognize attacks based on the non-vocal sounds made by predators or indirect auditory cues of ongoing attacks, mainly in the form of brief wingbeat sequences from predatory and non-predatory birds. Behavioral responses to p

Gelotophobia and the challenges of implementing laughter into virtual agents interactions.

This study investigated which features of AVATAR laughter are perceived threatening for individuals with a fear of being laughed at (gelotophobia), and individuals with no gelotophobia. Laughter samples were systematically varied (e.g., intensity, laughter pitch, and energy for the voice, intensity of facial actions of the face) in three modalities: animated facial expressions, synthesized auditory laughter vocalizations, and motion capture generated puppets displaying laughter body movements. In the online study 123 adults completed, the GELOPH <15 > (Ruch and Proyer, 2008a,b) and rated rando

The crucial role of diverse animal models to investigate cochlear aging and hearing loss.

Age-related hearing loss affects a large and growing segment of the population, with profound impacts on quality of life. Age-related pathology of the cochlea-the mammalian hearing organ-underlies age-related hearing loss. Because investigating age-related changes in the cochlea in humans is challenging and often impossible, animal models are indispensable to investigate these mechanisms as well as the complex consequences of age-related hearing loss on the brain and behavior. In this review, we advocate for a comparative and interdisciplinary approach while also addressing the challenges of c

Abrasion and blunt tissue trauma study of a novel flexible robotic system in the porcine model.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to determine if a flexible robotic system caused increased tissue reaction when accessing the oropharynx and hypopharynx compared to intubation controls in only 2 scenarios: high speed tissue impact and multiple unit insertions and retractions. The data obtained were submitted as part of the entirety of information submitted for FDA approval. METHODS: This study consisted of 5 groups of Yorkshire pigs (2 animals per group). On Day 0, all animals were intubated. For group 1 (control), a second endotracheal tube was advanced to just above the vocal co

Anxiety- and depressive-like profiles during early- and mid-adolescence in the female Wistar Kyoto rat.

Approaches for the development of preclinical models of depression extensively use adult and male animals owing to the discrepancies arising out of the hormonal flux in adult females and adolescents during attainment of puberty. Thus the increased vulnerability of females towards clinical depression and anxiety-related disorders remains incompletely understood. Development of clinical models of depression in adolescent females is essential in order to evolve effective treatment strategies for adolescent depression. In the present study, we have examined the anxiety and depressive-like profiles

Stimulation of denervated muscle promotes selective reinnervation, prevents synkinesis, and restores function.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Previously, electrical stimulation of denervated canine laryngeal muscle was shown to promote reinnervation by native over foreign motoneurons. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of different stimulus paradigms on reinnervation quality and functional recovery. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective study of six canines over 8 to 20 months. METHODS: A clinical model of laryngeal paralysis was used, where recurrent laryngeal nerves of the animals were sectioned and ventilation compromised. The abductor, posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscles were implanted bilaterally

The effect of intermittent alcohol vapor or pulsatile heroin on somatic and negative affective indices during spontaneous withdrawal in Wistar rats.

RATIONALE: Once dependent on alcohol or opioids, negative affect may accompany withdrawal. Dependent individuals are hypothesized to "self-medicate" in order to cope with withdrawal, which promotes escalated alcohol and drug use. OBJECTIVES: The current study aimed to develop a reliable animal model to assess symptoms that occur during spontaneous alcohol and opioid withdrawal. METHODS: Dependence was induced using intermittent alcohol exposure or pulsatile heroin delivery and assessed for the presence of withdrawal symptoms during acute withdrawal by measuring somatic signs, behavior in the

Controlled laryngoplasty for vocal cord medialization: a technique using tissue expansion.

Laryngeal framework surgery has become an increasingly popular alternative to Teflon injection for vocal rehabilitation. Vocal cord medialization requires custom tailoring of the implant's size and shape to optimize individual vocal quality, whether it be via the interposition of Silastic implants between the thyroid ala and the inner thyroid perichondrium or through a cartilage window. A new technique is described for vocal cord medialization using an implanted miniature tissue expander. Intraoperative and postoperative vocal cord medialization was achieved in a canine model by controlled per

Selective reinnervation of vocal cord adductors in unilateral vocal cord paralysis.

Laryngeal reinnervation procedures were performed in a series of dogs. An attempt was made to reinnervate the vocal cord adductors with one nerve graft, while a different nerve was grafted to the abductors. The recurrent laryngeal nerve was dissected distally to its terminal branches, where the abductor-adductor sorting out occurs. The abductor branch was reinnervated with a phrenic nerve graft as previously described. The adductor division was grafted with one of the following nerves: proximal recurrent laryngeal, external branch of superior laryngeal, or ansa hypoglossi. Results revealed tha

Epithelial response to vocal fold microflap injury in a preclinical model.

OBJECTIVES: Functional outcomes following microflap surgery for vocal fold pathology are favorable. Although the stratified squamous epithelium appears to heal rapidly, persistent physiologic tissue alterations are likely. We sought to elucidate key biochemical processes including recruitment of immune cells, regulation of cellular junction proteins, and long-term alterations to epithelial tissue permeability following microflap with an eye toward enhanced clinical outcomes. METHODS: Forty New Zealand rabbits were assigned to eight groups (n = 5/group): no-injury control or bilateral microfla
